C500: Price Drop on C500?

Just looked up a B&H page for C500 out of curiosity emanating from the recent Canon talk and its site is offering C500 and (!!!) Odyssey Q7 for $18,000 combined.

I assume this is a US price from all licensed distributors. The lowest I saw C500 before was $20,000 around the holidays but that was without Q7.

This is a new bundle being offered by Canon USA of a complete camera kit. It's an amazing value. Not only is the Odyssey7Q included, but so are two 256GB Odyssey SSDs, cables, a SATA-to-USB3 adapter to download files, an Odyssey Canon battery plate, and the Canon Cinema RAW Record Option pre-installed on the Odyssey7Q. There is a LOT of value piled into this kit.

As some one who owns a C500 and O7Q, I'd say the latest offer is an amazing deal. The O7Q is a great monitor value and when you consider this deal includes SSD's, Canon Raw license and acccessories, its qi=uite the deal.

does the Q7 do the higher frame rates... I know when the camera first came out you had to used two recorders to get the higher frame rates... lol that is if my memory is working correctly...

plus how about just pro res 4k...

I checked for the full package info but I either missed the links or they weren't updated ... or something.

Anyhow, it's nice to have the correct/ed info from the source/s. On a consolidated accounting statement, this package knocks down the C500 price to about $15,000 or ~ 50% off its original MSRP from 2012.

And people complain about the 1D C cut!

It was the Convergent Design Gemini 444 that required two recorders in tandem to keep up with higher frame rates on the C500. The Odyssey7Q has more than twice the processing power of the Gemini, so it needs only one unit recording to two SSDs simultaneously.

The Odyssey7Q and the Odyssey7Q+ have the same capabilities with regard to the C500. Record capabilities include:

(no record option required)
- 2K 10/12-bit RGB recording to uncompressed DPX stacks
- HD 10/12-bit RGB recording to uncompressed DPX stacks

(with record option)
- 4K RAW recording up to 60p
- QHD RAW recording up to 60p
- 4K 'half RAW" recording at 100p & 120p
- 4K RAW to 4K ProRes recording up to 30p
- QHD RAW to UHD ProRes recordig up to 30p

Wow, so the C500 looks almost as good as the FS7 - except needs add-ons and costs 3x as much!Apologies for my flippancy and I'm sure there will be reasons why it's incorrect, but just seems like an incredibly expensive bit of kit still. The FS7 gives 4k/60fps and HD 180fps internally and costs $8,000 ready to shoot!Steve

I think that's a pretty weak argument these days though, with high dynamic range, high bit depth log images coming out of a camera you can pretty much make any of them look like any other (more or less).Just IMO.Steve

It is simply not true. People like to believe that things like RAW and high bit depth one can make any camera look like any other camera but it is incorrect. The chemical dyes in the Bayer mask, the makeup of the OLPF, the design of the driver board for the sensor, and about 100 other factors will still shape the look of the image. Yes you can dumb them all down to look like one another but if a camera has a certain unique quality then it may be very well impossible for others to attain this look. Some cameras are known for how they reproduce skin tine, others for how they roll highlights, still others for how they handle mixed color temperatures.

It's a fallacy I see all the time with people touting their Blackmagic cameras and stating that their RAW is just the same as the RAW out of any other camera. Why pay $40K when you can get "the same image" for $4K? Because it isn't and you can't.

We'll have to agree to disagree there. I did say "more or less" and that's what I meant - you can get any 2 decent cameras to match closely enough that you can edit them together without them jarring.Steve

On the B&H website it says ''The camera shoots 4K, recording to the included Odyssey 7Q recorder, with optional upgrade''
B&H says it needs an optional upgrade and you say that this is included...what is true? Also, the battery plate don't seem to be included according to B&H....???

Not all cameras are equal. Many people swear by the image that comes out of the Canon camera. It is quite lovely.

Lovely is a great word to describe it, unique indeed. Probably the most underrated camera on the market today because of its launch pricing. I have a feeling over the next couple of years this combo will have a cult like following.

We have alerted B&H that they should update the information, but as it is officially a Canon bundle, B&H needs to confirm it with Canon. So they are delayed in getting the information refreshed.
