Possible Base Package

Seems no one really knows. Is it a four pin connector? I have yet to see any XLR input(s) "appear" anywhere.

Lots of guessing about some basic functions which only adds to the confusion.
On the image you referenced earlier, a 4-pin connector was shown. You can tell by the 4 circles shown within the connector port. In the image I linked to, shown again here:

You can clearly see (4) 3-Pin XLR connectors, which would be supported by the Red specs that state they will have 4-Channel audio.

I hate to break this to you but those are not XLR connections.

Just a thought...why aren't things more clearly labeled on all those pretty drawings?

I understand things are under development but I see more care being given to the color of the camera body instead of identifying important parts on the camera body itself. Not to mention a black camera body being displayed most time on a very black background.

Clearly showing the product to potential customers is kind of important and would help all of us to see what is and isn't part of this basic camera body.

Identify the slots and connector positions! Why is that so difficult at this point?

I don't think that's an unfair thing to expect from people trying to sell a rather expensive product, no matter what the final cost.:)

It has been mentioned previously that the XLR is a 4-pin connector. You can see it clearly in the image which you yourself quoted (even though that's most certainly not a finalized rendering anyway).

Please stop trolling, it's getting old.

Yes, they are, but mini-XLR plugs, not full size. Electrically they are identical, just in a smaller form factor. I have one on my AKG K271 studio headphones. HTH

Now I'm accused of trolling?

Sorry, but my honest questions should not be described in that manner.

Up until this moment, I have not been aware of anyone saying it was a "mini". In fact, that information is kind of important and, again, something which SHOULD be clearly labeled for those thinking of buying the camera.

It's a simple question no one seems to want to address. Why aren't those connectors clearly labeled for what and where they are on the web site?

Instead it's one fantasy drawing of the camera after another with anyone having the gall to ask a fair question being labeled a troll.

Why the fear? A simple, clear explanation would solve everything but for some reason, that never happens.

Not a good way to attract customers if the goal is to really sell this camera sometime in the future.

Why waste time documenting something that will change anyway?

When the design is finalized and the first final body is produced I'm sure we'll get all the info :-)

Lensmith, its cool. Please understand that alot queastions will be answered at the end of the month. A TREMENDOUS amount of details will be revealed at that time.

Dude, you have been somewhat inflammatory from the word go, if you treat people with common courtesy you might be suprised with the response.

On a side note, I went to your website and the photo of newsphotogs scurring about trying to avoid the melee, would not be the ideal enviroment for a camera with such an aggressive design. Would you not fear a misunderstanding of monumental proportions? I used to do network scrums myself, but the people I was covering did not have sticks or guns- just lawyers.

Goodluck ...

Yes, that's it - constant flux until lock-down. Normally you never see a product in development like this, so it's a bit disorienting. As soon as we get lock-down, we can tell you what everything is, and where it goes.

Lensmith, People think of it as "trolling" because folks keep coming on and demanding final answers for a developing product. You can tell them 'till you're blue in the face that it isn't final and yet they demand the final answer NOW anyway. Either they can't understand that simple concept or they are indeed trolling.

I apologize for what I thought were simple questions.

I understand everything is still in flux. I'm not "demanding" anything. Simply wanting information about a camera which is supposed to be fairly close to production. Not knowing information about what and where the various connections are located, goes to the heart of the camera design and it's intended delivery date. If those connections, type and location, haven't been truly finalized then that effects the board design and layout of the camera which, in my mind, adds many more months, possibly a year or two to any future delivery date for the consumer.

But why waste the time and effort to change the color of the camera or keep updating drawings without some of the basic information like what kind and how many types of connectors are to be on the camera?

Especially for a camera which is supposed to be in consumers hands in the near future?

I've had difficulty looking at the drawings and understanding exactly what types of connections are to be included on the camera.

Frankly, mini XLR connections would not be my first choice but...this isn't the final design so maybe that will change.

For people to be upset that I ask about connection types and locations seems silly when those same people seem willing to spend even more time thinking about rental rates for the Red or work-flow questions involving the camera.

Why is it OK to ask about those questions and not, what I consider, much easier questions?

Fine, I'll sit back and read without asking. However to not have the information I'm looking for equally available, especially on the Red site, as other more nebulous discussions here about camera rental rates can't help but leave me thinking this camera is still a long way from ever becoming reality.

I've kept a pretty open mind about this camera and it's development compared to other professional friends of mine. Having several here claim I am "trolling" and others calling my questions "inflammatory" without offering real information other than second hand guesses..does not add credibility or confidence to this product or it's design development.

For any other company, yes, such changes would put back delivery schedule, but not for us. We're not designing a camera like anyone elses, and we're not designing it in the same way as anyone else. You've got to forget all you know or think you know about how traditional cameras are designed.

Tonacidigital wrote that it would have HDMI / DVI monitoring, where did he find this info? I was only aware of HD-SDI output.

I believe I read somewhere that it would have at least two HDMI connectors. Of course if these were both used up by the on-board monitor and EVF, then any external monitor might need to use the SDI output.

I understand that a few people seem to feel that way, but they've reiterated several times that they are on schedule and they are building the camera in a fashion that is different from the norm. You just have to trust that they're holding up their end of the deal (and over 600 people do). Of course, if you'd rather wait until it's all said and done, that's fine too. Just don't keep badgering them about it. :) That being said,

I agree with you here. Well, except I'm one of the people who thinks both kinds of questions aren't going to get us very far when they haven't finalized (or aren't ready to share) a lot of that information yet. It seems to me they are sharing what they can as they go along, so instead of hypothesizing or second guessing them, it's better to just wait until they make official announcements. Or, if it suits you better, perhaps you can offer up your suggestions/ideas in the "think tank" area as opposed to questioning why or why not they are doing something a certain way (when those attributes may not even have been decided yet). I think that's all most of us are saying.

Personally I have pulled off this board a bit.. I'm a busy guy (well, I try to be) and I can only afford to speculate so much. I now come in here just to see if there has been any new footage, or a new render of the camera, or perhaps a hardcore piece of information. These are the things that matter to me now.

I enjoy this process, but I have reached the point where I am more like "Ok guys, it all SOUNDS good.. Start showing me stuff".

The sunglass clip was a good start. I am hoping that Jim will make a habit of giveing us something to show on a weekly basis.

I'm happy... Just busy and ready to see things. I have no doubt the fellows at RED feel the same way! :)

Lensmith, I'm guessing you want that info now as it may affect a desicion your contemplating. Perhaps- to make a reservation, or waite and see if the price fluctuates. If that was my dilema, I would want those answeres- A third possibility. Red will announce final details in Nov (maybe- development disclaimer may always apply :), which is after the reservation deadline. Reservions are fully refundable.

Everyones opinions are valuble. So jump in when you want. Most of the people who you may have felt used a harsh tone- would have used a kinder tone- if they felt yours was kinder.

Anyhow- have a great day team.

Vladimir

I'm with you Jay, I'd like to see a little less whining and a little more footage. The red guys are busy re inventing the camera as we know it and software that makes 4k usable for mere mortals..going off arguing about off line versus on line etc. is a real bore and a waste of time. We will know what is up when JJ is ready to tell us. I have no doubt that we are going to be pleased with the outcome.
Aloha
