FS7: PMW FS5 Announced.

Looks like the perfect tool for my work. Glad my contract delayed buying the FS7 and that I didn't gamble with the LS300.

Mitch was asking Sony about that ND, response was that it works like an lcd. Amount of shading is controlled by amount of electrical current going through. So it's not a simple polarizer. It's similar to the one that can be find on Red mount. But would be best when Mitch will tune in and explain what he heard.

I have seen the camera today and talked with Alistair Chapman about it. It's still beta but impressive nonetheless.

Really lightweight, perfect for handheld Operation, center scan works on an instant.

Even if you'll miss the beter codecs.
It's still 10bit HD with lots of dynamic.
It has built in SLog2/3 but the color space has still to be confirmed. S-Gamut3.cine???

The whole operation was snappier than with my FS7.

But I hope Sony gives us FS7 owners the same features.
Wanna have center scan and better menu responce, too!!!

Great info Erik - good to know that it is, as I'd hoped, a lot snappier than the FS7 regarding menus etc.

I think, just like when Canon brought out the original C100 they incorporated some improvements and new features over the C300 (i.e. not just cutting back on the original C300 offering). Who knows, if Sony keep up this pace we'll see a FS7 MkII soon…but for sure Sony have announced some firmware improvements for you lucky FS7 owners that should see the light of day in the next few months so just maybe some of these great FS5 features will work there way into that too, hardware permitting.

One question. I've heard there is no Waveform monitor option on the FS5 :-(

…but I assume it has Zebras??? I know it will get Histogram as I've already seen that listed in the specs. Any of these working on the pre-production unit your saw?

From the looks of it, this camera is gonna be my first foray into a camcorder body instead of a DSLR style. I'm looking forward to seeing more in-depth reviews and user footage.

That pretty much sums up what I'm at liberty to share.

FS5 positives for me: 240 FPS at full HD res and it does 960 fps at 720P... 960...wow! Pretty cool. The light weight of the camera is startling. The variable ND will be very nice. They upped the computer power so menus will not be sluggish. I like the rotatable handgrip; very EX1ish—pretty cool little camera.

Where did you read about the boost in computer power? As sluggishness is one of the more annoying things I find with Sony.

I must apologize and give a correction. The UHD output over HDMI will actually be 4:2:2 8-bit. I looked back in my notes and had it wrong. I confirmed this directly with Sony today. My bad.

Awww.... Noooo.... that is terrible to read!! :-( I guess they're clearly maintaining the division between FS7 and FS5

Isn't the FS5 more like an updated FS700 rather than a slimmed down FS7? The OSD looks more like the FS700 than anything else and not like the FS7.
My thoughts as well! Frame rates, internal cache, memory cards/slot used... For me everything shouts FS700+/markII/(whatever)!!

Compare to the PXW-X70 spec almost the same other than 100Mbps for UHD 30P ( that is what X70 owners have been complaining about since the FDR-AX100 has this data rate ).

It was mentioned by a Sony rep in a video I saw.... https://vimeo.com/138861804. Newsshooter at IBC 2015: Sony PXW-FSW Briefing from Chuck Fadley. It was quite an informative video.

European reseller Creative Ventures tweeted that they've received more FS5 pre orders than FS7 pre orders at it's release. Also that the pre orders of the FS5 were more than they've sold C100s in TOTAL. If this is any general indication it seems Sony has a pretty big hit with the FS5...
Personally im a bit "meh!" about it. But I guess, if I didn't already have the FS700 I'd be more excited.

I think you might mean CVP, Creative Video Products, based here in the UK???

And by the way, I'm one of those FS5 pre-orders - I placed it Friday afternoon so maybe I was too late and won't get one of the first batch after all :-(

Ah, got itI Just Googled the name on reading your post and found a US design/marketing agency and then a Belgian camera etc. supplier. Did not know about them before. Still, I'm sure their comment about all those pre-orders is an indication of just how popular this camera is going to be.
