FS7: PMW FS5 Announced.

Does it have internal lens correction also at 4K for this sofa cushion of a lens? I am not sure wether the 18-105 is a good move.

I dunno - Id suggest it is best considered to be a 1080 camera.

Nothing wrong with that - the only affordable 1080 10bit ND camera out there.. nice.

I hope that center scan and clear image zoom make their way
into FS7 firmware soon!

It's a nice little camera imho.

Hopes for Sony delivering a better FS7 firmware got down again.
They love to sent new babies out much more than fiddling with
old ones...

Will have some questions to the Sony guys at IBC on sunday

Like morgan_more says, from the perspective of a full HD camera (with a 4k bonus), it's sweet. I understand it as the buffered 240fps mode is in full quality, 10bit 422. That's nice.

But suggested retail is close to $7000. Let's see if it drops to around $5600 or so.

Im not undertanding the codecs.

xavc L = long gop 50mbs seems to be the max in 1080? (or 100mbs in 4k which is 2X more compressed)

quite a lot more compressed than the FS7?

Yes, the codecs are very lean. And with no real output options at this point (?)

It's the weakness of the camera, it seems.

Overall a good effort from Sony, and I'm certainly not knocking it... but I would probably rather pay $14k for the C300 mkII than $7k for this—if I look at it as a business investment.

remember list price and street price are different.

I could like this cam (a lot). but at 1/3 of the price of the FS7 :)

S

I don't get it. It’s not much cheaper than an FS7. So why not just get an FS7?

...the FS7 additional features are looking like a real bargain by comparison.

The FS5 is not a baby FS7 it's its own thing and Sony have placed it in the right position in the lineup.

..apart from it not being a very attractive Bcam for the FS7 IMO.

-too costly
-too weak codec Im thinking

I have a (lower end) job this weekend.. covering an 'open day' and just built my FS7 - Im thinking I would pick the '5' for this job - but at the price Ill lump the extra kg!

It does claim RAW and it has a 3G SDI socket - so there's a chance that it will record RAW without another unit (unlike the FS7) also the sensor might be an updated version, there were some issues with the nature of RAW output on the FS7 that may well have been fixed now.

cheers

Why buy a tidy little camera and add a bunch of cables and crap.

Not how I see the cam at all.

If I ever do a raw project I guess Ill rent an F55?

of course every use is different :)

Below are some shots that I snapped with iPhone at the press rollout and some observations.

We were able to use ClearScan and a combination of ClearScan and Center Crop go up to 4x from a prime. Also works with zoom lenses. There is a pause between hitting optical limit of zoom before ClearScan kicks in. So no continuous zoom.
Variable ND is an intersting feature. It is accomplished electronically but there is a physical screen in front of sensor. What really was interesting was the ability to set ND for the fixed wheel positions.
The VF has the same connector as FS7 but mount is vastly improved. It can be removed and mounted with 1/4 20. So you will note that one of the images has VF mounted at rear.
Like the FS7, the 4K XAVC-L is 8 bit 4:2:0. The HDMI will output UHD 8 bit 4:2:2. HD XAVC-L is 10 bit 4:2:2
Also showed image of top handle removed for even more compact shooting.

Concensus of journalists present at the demo is that it makes an excellent doco camera. Form factor great for hand held.

And a few more things--

MI shoe but 2 channels of audio
Raw output will be available later as a paid upgrade. No word on when or how much.
Same sensor as FS7
Native sensor ISO is 3200
It does not have a CineEI mode.
No user-loadable LUTs

While it is easy to miss in all the IBC product dumps, Sony also introduced A7S II today. I briefly saw the press release but it was before coffee so brain couldn't process.

Im guessing the back screen does not have the resolution to trust? (so the shown image to the eye is not viable) - this is S35 not 1/3!

the other hand will have to focus and support mass - hard.

It looks pretty hard to wrestle without a rig.

And 'doc' will always have a mic and a lav?

How 3200 with the same sensor?

Only a BNC connector, i know what you mean though...

When are we going to start seeing internal 10 bit 4K (and not UHD either...)

In this interview, Juan Martinez says it will have raw "eventually". He chooses his words carefully, so it doesn't sound too promising for quick availability.

Much like the FS700, a few years afterwards - hopefully not that long...

cheers

That was my concern, too. Although I guess with the FS700 they were developing hardware, whereas with the FS5 it's only firmware. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if some of the bit-rate and output limitations are imposed by the marketing department, rather than technical difficulties.

When Porsche realized its ultimate success of the 911, the produced the lower cost 914. Seems like Sony is trying the same marketing approach here. Ultimately, the 914 met with limited success, since it really was nowhere close to the 911 in sex appeal or functionality. This offering is boring and ergonomically a disaster.
