"PLACEBO" - Piatt Films

You do realize Jack lives in Texas now, right? So maybe...

No way! I know he used to live here (near/in Denton)...which is crazy because it is sort of a....er..."nothing" area.

I'll start plotting ways to secretly seduce you guys into sharing your secrets of success....

Thanks again for watching our little film! I'd love to get your thoughts on the longer version once we get an edit closer to a finished version...

- Daniel

i met up with JDS and his girlfriend megan (sp?) while I was in austin. and i think austin is where he lives now.

Man, Austin is always stealing our good people! :furious3:

I was curious which city he had ended up in...thanks for the info Zak!

Awesome dude! Glad you dig it. I'll pass the compliment on to my Sound Designer...he definitely deserves it!

About 4 hours before the film was due I heard the final rough mix and I still wasn't sure if the film was gonna be watchable. Dustin (the Sound Designer) said, "Ok, I'll do the final mixdown and send it to you."

When I hit play and watched it through for the first time I was amazed and how much of a difference a good mix made! Everything blends, the right sounds punch at the right time, it gives each scene a unique emotional quality...crazy! I definitely agree with those who say sound is equal to (or probably more important than) the quality of the video.

It's tough NOT to agree with that, since we had sound (i.e. Radio) LONG before we had moving images. Sound is what fuels the imagination, and fills in the gaps. It helps propel & support what we SEE ... and likewise, it can destroy it.

Typically, people will be far more moved by what they HEAR, with NO visuals, than what they SEE with NO sound.

Very true Norm! I think good sound can be so powerful because it influences us subconsciously...

It seems like the activity dies way down when it goes to Round 2. It is completely understandable because the number of people who have a "vested interest" has been cut way down...but it makes me wonder if perhaps the Round 2 phase should be shorter. Like a day or two.

Has this been discussed before? The moderators do an outstanding job and so I imagine this has already been talked about but figured I would raise the thought.

I agree about shorting the deadline on the 2nd round. Unless the moderators know something we don't know... like a bigger count of votes from non-festival participating members.

Yeah, that's what I was wondering. I didn't know if there was actually a significant amount of votes and/or views that comes in over that period. Just kind of popped into my head that we might lose some people who wanna know the results but forget to come back after a week...

No biggie! Just throwin' it out there.

Best camera work / lighting / sound effects / special effects / - best technical skills of this fest, absolutely. But the script was lacking, and the genre conventions were numerous. Solid acting, really solid, and tons of eye-candy. Plus I love the handheld. But the story... we've had so many zombie / science experiment gone wrong films recently, it turns me off rather quickly. Which is unfortunate, I guess, since your film looked so accomplished.

I thought this was a fun genre exercise that looked great and was entertaining.
*Spoilers*
All for the unreliable narrator but there's a small logic hole in the narrative. Your unreliable narrator is not of the deceiving us variety but of the mistaken variety. I think it's problematic there for that he states he KNOWS that he as part of the placebo group, when in fact he does not know this until he looks at the files and sees he was given the real drugs. If, instead, he wonders why whatever they did or gave to the other wings didn't have the same affect on him (he could theorize that he must have had the placebo) then that would be playing a little more fair with the audience. But the way he states that he KNOWS they were the placebo group implies he read it somewhere or was told that when we see that he did not know that at all when he looks at the files for the first time and learns the truth. Also this could add to the audience's interest level throughout the film because now we have a mystery we want to see solved / a question we want to see answered, why not him too? And it's mystery and questionb that you will pay off well with the reveal that it was in fact him. So to me it's a small logic hole, and a missed opportunity to begin the piece with a question that will add to our investment - but something you can implement if you want with changing one line of V.0.
*End Spoilers*
Well done. Looking forward to your next one.

Great look and feel. You really have captured that action/thriller vibe... very intense. This was well cut. I would have liked to have seen more traveling action like going from room to room rather than being in one area though. Loved the lighting btw.

Nice job!

Congratulations, Daniel. Almost there. Perhaps your next one will capture the top spot.:beer:

Dude, one HELL of a big congrats to you. I know how much work you put into this one and as a result.. I've got my eye on you for Quest Fest! I expect some Spielberg-grade from you next time up!

Hey everyone!

Just wanted to say thanks to each of you who took the time to watch the film and especially those who expressed your honest opinion about the work! As we've said before we are working on a longer version and all of the thoughts have been extremely helpful in crafting it into a better story.

We are honored and excited to be awarded 2nd Place by our peers! It is one thing to have your Mom say you did a good job...but since she wouldn't finish watching it, it is really helpful that some of you liked it instead.

There really were SO MANY strong films this time around I didn't think we had a shot...so we are humbled to be in such great company! I hope each of you return for QuestFest!

And finally...a huge thank you to the moderators of this site. Specifically Jason and Larry (and any others working BTS that I'm not aware of). They are dedicated and passionate professionals who, for whatever reason, choose to spend their time encouraging us to make films. This site is a continual source of motivation to me and much of this is due to their facilitating the community so well.

Congratulations to everyone who entered a film in this festival!!!

Ciao.

Daniel
