T2i picture style framegrabs (superflat, marvelcine, neutral)

Awesome info! Thank you for posting that...

The one thing me JVC100 could do (and I'm guessing a lot of other "true" video camera can) is program in a bunch of different coluor/lighting settings (thank you Paolo & Tim).

I was fairly certain that the Canon cams couldn't do it. So, even if it's a bit harder to do, at least it can be done.

So hey, nice bouns.

So I downloaded the picture profiles and tried to load them in Picture Style Editor .The marvel cine has been disabled for editing .....eeh is there anyway to bypass this !? :)

I found that the neutral settings far better for scenes with closeups and even close shots of crowds/people.

While superflats are good for everything else. Just my observation with my own tests though.

Hmm, I'm not exactly clear on how to choose these custom profiles for video. I'm able to choose them easily for photos, but when I go to video on the T2i, it reverts back to standard. How do you change this?

Yeah I think superflat goes too far. Marvelcine looks much better, but Neutral still works well. Looking forward to seeing more with AGFA. More good tests I can almost smell the Bustelo.

Hey guys :)

I just picked up my own t2i and first thing I did was try and hunt down some picture styles. I have to say I love the galvin films and marvel as well as genesis (though velv is nice if you plan on doing CC in post lol).

My question is I have heard on a few sites mention of a neutral picture style and even saw it in this thread but it was not in the zip. I was considering just tweaking an already on board style but was trying to figure out the numbers for it.

is it -4 -4 -1 or is there a fourth value in there? One of the neutrals listed in this thread uses 4 values the other uses three.

Thanks in advance and thank you all for your post on this site they have been most helpful.

Matt

Oh and by the way I found marvel 7d blog, is his latest there the same as the one in the zip file? or is that one to tweaked for a 7d to use on the t2i?

@ valdeck
neutral is not in the zip because it comes with the camera

I only mentioned 3 setting with neutral because sharpness is already at its lowest ie 0
the other 3 being
-4 on contrast
-4 on saturation
-1 on color tone

Thanks J, I kind of though that was the case.

Any idea on my question about the updated (november) version of Marvel from his blog working on the t2i and if the newest one was in that zip? I assume it would but wanted to ask.

Thanks for the zip file which worked fine.

For Mac users with potential issues:

The pf2 came down as a dms file type through Safari. With Firefox (Mac) the file came down as a pf2 file but didn't show in the Finder as an executable. The zips worked fine with both Mac browsers.

Thanks so much for making the profile, and for extra effort to help us get it. I look forward to trying it out!

Hey Green awesome profile I use it a lot... have you updated it at all since your post a few pages back? or am I ok to keep using the one that was there when you posted the link originally.

Now, I know that people like to bring the sharpness down in the camera settings (it can help reduce aliasing, for example) but I noticed how much softer the SuperFlat profile was than the Genesis.

Is it pretty common to run an unsharp mask to help bring a little bit of the sharpness back to these shots?

I have not updated it.
I have been busy with other jobs and have not had time to do more, or even shoot at all lately other then auditions for casting calls, nothing creative.

One day, I want to do a triptych to show why one would wat to use a flat tone curve.

While I agree if you take too much out, it is difficult to recover, at the same time,
having a flat base, you will have more range to do selective color changes, especially if you use plug ins like magic bullet.

Most of the settings in Magic bullet are way too much if you already have an image that pops, and is contrasty.

When you start with a flatter image, THEN you apply the filter, it doesn't look over done.

Again, I believe in flat, without sucking the life out of the image.

I think the ideal "flat" picture style for these cameras would be one that most closely approximates whatever the image would look like if it were the unprocessed RAW image from the sensor, and I have to believe that that would be NEUTRAL with Sharpness, Contrast, and Saturation turned down.

I think you are losing information with anything that flattens the image beyond NEUTRAL.

But that isn't to say that you shouldn't use other picture styles if you know the look you are going for, because it is better to apply those settings before the video is compressed.
