T2i picture style framegrabs (superflat, marvelcine, neutral)

Here is the Gavin Films film curve.
First image is what came out of camera with the film curve applied,
next is same image with one click filters applied to same image.

I got some footage with marvel that just didn't feel right. No skin in the shot either. Just a wooden telephone pole, sky, orange fruit and a squirrel. Tried to grade it but it never quite looked right. Seems like there was too much flatness and I lost a bunch of detail I couldn't get back. There also seem to be a grey shift as well. I'll try shooting it again when I get my fader ND so I can get the right exposure I wanted in the first place but it wasn't too far off.

Thank you for the info, I really like it. I could download the pf2 files, that was in the zip at the bottom of this thread, but don't know what to do after. I can' t open it. I did figure it btw how to set the 3 numbers (contrast, saturation, color tone) manually and how to apply it in video.
But can somebody tell me the settings (3 numbers) for superflat, genesis, marvel, velvia?
Thank you

Did anyone try Eugenia Loli-Queru's ExtraFlat picture style? So far, it's my favorite. Check it out and get it from here: http://goo.gl/jAtZ

Same installation instructions as for the styles mentioned on this thread.

AriG - I'd like to give PBPS a try as well. I googled it but I can't find it even on his blog.

Do you mind pointing me in the right direction?

Thanks!

You won't find it cause it is not downloadable.

It is simply based on the "Neutral" internal picture style and then change the setting
like the following :

Sharpness ---> No sharpness (all the way to the left)
Contrast ---> No contrast (all the way to the left)
Saturation --> -2 (two notches to the left from 0)
Color Tone --> Unmodified (0)

Weird, using superflat like above gives me HORRIBLE vertical banding all across the image. Is it just my camera? I sent mine back to Canon for repair and they sent me it back, having replaced the sensor, and the same issue happens...

The vertical banding is something I have noticed with the superflat settings. Try this, turn on highlight tone priority, and those bands will be the stars of the show.

It's there on superflat, and extraflat, also there on neutral as well or any other preset too.

Especially noticable on superflat, iso 100, HTP on with a wide aperture telephoto lens. Only solution I have is just to over-expose abit and cry at the digital-looking crushed highlights

Your Canon also has this problem PaPas?

Canon have replaced my sensor and the same things occur then it must be within their normal boundaries.

So basically this is what superflat shows in my videos and stills:

rawphoto.jpg

I took the above photo as a RAW, then loaded it into Photoshop Camera Raw, clicked on auto. And Whabam! That's the noise that is always with my 550D. Would anyone be so kind to do the same, I'm willing to bet everyone elses is slightly varied. But alot of other people are having success with superflats and curves that bring out shadow detail???

Interesting.

Here are two samples.

Nice pictures, Perrone. That looks similar to my experiences with my T2i using the neutral picture style. It always looks a little boring until I put the color back in later.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Zacuto shootout here yet. For those who don't know, this is where some of the best names in the business got together and did fairly rigorous methodical tests on a variety of cameras, including most of the current DSLR cameras and an Arri 35mm film camera. They compared the pros and cons of each, and had Philip Bloom representing the DSLR side and Bob Primes ASC representing film. They played with all of the settings on the cameras (although they didn't delve into custom picture styles) to try and get the best results in a professional grading suite.

The results for the Canon DSLR cameras? Disable automatic everything (including HTP and that sort of thing), shoot using the neutral picture style, sharpness all the way down, contrast all the way down, saturation at minus two (0, -4, -2, 0). It looks less exciting while you're shooting, but gives you the most flexibility in color grading.

By the way, I did not TOUCH saturation in that color grade. I put whites on 100 IRE, blacks on 0 IRE, and adjusted gamma a bit darker than the scene in real life. I enhanced no colors. This is how it came out of the camera, and a nearly 40 year old lens.

I also have noise at even ISO 200 :(

Hope it is not related to either v1.0.8 firmware or the Picture Styles.

BTW

Can I reapply 1.0.8 ?

frame grab or still?
which gamma curve are you using, FCP 3way or Color InRoom?
deets plz !

you will only see the banding when your pushing the iso high and your image is slighly under exposed ( areas of under exposure )

Still.

I need to go shoot some other stuff soon, and I'll do both.

I don't remember applying a curve. I believe it was just a linear gamma change.

I don't use a Mac. I did the grade in Magic Bullet looks... Looks Builder.
