PHOTOfunStudio Replacement

Andrew,
My guess is that you have some long clips that possibly span more than one file or some other corner case. The problem I'm having is that these files are not publicly documented and I'm having to guess at how to read them. These corner cases are driving me nuts! I have several example files from other people that I've been trying to process but I'm not having any luck figuring it out. I'm afraid I'm stuck at this point.

Hi Phil,

It's been a while since I've read this thread. And it appears to be a while since you've been posting here. I hope you're still active with youjr GH1 File Importer.

First, I see you have made several updatges to your great importer tool since I was last here. As someone said a while back, your customer service for a free tool is head and shoulders above what you get from expensive software. I hope you don't get tired of hearing that.

Now that I have buttered you up :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG), I have just purchased a Panasonic GH3. It has the option to record .mp4 video. Since the GH2 doesn't do .mp4, your tool obviously doesn't handle those files. I get an error message like this:

View attachment gh1 importer error.jpg

[Update: I don't think I properly inserted the jpg image of the error message as I cannot see it in the thread. If someone could tell me how to do it, I will add it to this post or simple create another. Thanks.]

Is there a chance you could add a feature in an upcoming release to copy those files?

FWIW, the GH3 simply drops the .mp4 files into the 100_PANA folder along with all the .jpg and .rw2 still photos. It would be great if you could copy them to the Video folder your tool creates as it copies files from the cam. If that's not possible, maybe you could just include them in the Photos folder along with the normal .jpg and .rw2 files.

I don't know if there are any other new file formats, still or video, that the GH3 introduces; I'm still trying to understand all its options. Nor do I know if there have been any changes to the GH3 file structure but your tool appears to have copied all my still photos. I'd be glad to send you any info on file structure that I can determine that could help with this issue.

I can easily add the mp4 file support. I've run into issues with spanned file support and since the file formats are not publicly documented I've hit a roadblock. I'm not home until this weekend so I won't be able to do anything until then. Stay tuned.

drv,
I'm starting to look into handing the mp4 files, but I have some questions. Since I don't have a GH3, I can't answer these myself. Can you tell me how the file names appear on the SD card? You said they appear in the same folder as the pictures, but not how they are named. Do you want the output files to be renamed with the date/time information as I do with the MTS files? If so, I'm assuming the date/time stamp stored in the directory entry is correct? For the MTS files, I have to pull the date/time information from the PLAYLIST files. I believe the GH3 can output MP4 files with different resolutions, etc. Is this specified anywhere in the output file name? I'd like to be able to keep the "quality" indicator that I do with the MTS files.

Once I have these questions answered, I'll change the program accordingly and send you a zip file of the new program for you to test. Please send me your email address via a private message so I can send the program to you directly.

Regards,
Phil

All good questions, Phil. Hopefully these are good answers.

I have a screen shot of the DCIM folder that shows the file naming convention. I cannot figure out how to display it in a post here so I'll PM a link to it to you.

Yes, renaming with date/time info for MP4 files as you do for MTS files would be good.

The date/time stamps appear to be correct.

There is nothing in the PRIVATE > AVCHD > BDMV > PLAYLIST folder so I assume you don't need any info from there as you do for MTS files.

As you can see from the screen shot, there is nothing in the file name for the MP4 files that indicates resolution. Not sure what to say about the quality indicator. (I've only shot this one clip at whatever the default resolution is. I don't know if other resolutions would produce different file names. I could experiment if it would help you.)

I'll PM you my email address as requested.

Thanks so much for making your indispensible program even better.

I've published version 1.0.19 to the root page. This version adds support for MP4 files as requested by drv. I also made some corrections to the PLAYLIST handling that MIGHT be able to process spanned files correctly. If anyone runs into this situation, let me know how it works. Spanned files are a mess, but I think I may have got it finally.

Thank you, Phil. Your program makes managing photos and videos on GHx cameras so much easier. Keep up the good work. Got any tricks up your sleeve for future releases?

Hey Phil,

I'm really enjoying the latest fix you made to your GH* File Importer for GH3 .mp4 files. As I was importing a bunch of photos and videos today, I thought of a new project for you if you have some extra time on your hands.

A few pages back in this thread, I asked about renaming photo files after copying them with your program. Someone suggested using Irfanview's batch file renaming feature. I started using it and it works great. But it takes another step after running your program. So I thouht, hey, why not ask Phil to add a photo renaming feature like Irfanview's. It's quite powerful, using a pattern matching string to allow a vast number of different renaming schemes. (Check Irfanview's Help for "Text/Pattern Options" for details.)

This is a pretty complex set of changes. As always, I'd be willing to help test anything you come up with. So, let us know if this is something you'd like to tackle  or not :furious3:.

I've added support for renaming photos per drv's request in the previous posting. I've also updated the base note to provide a link to the latest version on Google Docs instead of attaching the file. Hopefully, this will work out for everyone.

Phil

I would love to update my importer but I am lost with Google docs files. I downloaded all of them but setup.exe won't run. I've no idea how to start the installation.

The application setup is posted to Google Docs as a zip file. When you navigate to the link in the root message, Google shows you the contents of the zip file which can be confusing. On that page you should see a File menu just below the large "GH1Importer.zip" text at the top of the window. Click on File, then Download. This will prompt you for a location on your computer where you want the zip file stored. Once you have the zip file on your computer, you can extract all the files to another location and from there run the setup.exe file. Note that you may have to "unblock" the setup.exe file by right-clicking on that file in File Explorer and choosing Properties, then Unblock.

Let me know if this still doesn't work for you.

Thanks Phil. I followed your directions and it worked like a dream :). Thank you for all your effort to write the program and keep it updated. I've been a satisfied user since the first version.

I use it since couple of years, can't imagine my job without it. So downloaded newest version from the link at 1st post, but it says 1.0.18 instead of 1.0.20...

Hi Phil,

Can you please add thee MOV and MP4 in the file types transferred by GH1Imprter? Useful for GH4 owners.

The latest version (1.0.20) should already support that. Let me know if you can't download it from the Google Drive linked on the first page.
