Philip Bloom's first test

Am I missing something? Overall, it's kind of impressive, seeing as it's being tasked the way it is, but no banding? I'm seeing banding all over the place. (especially around the flame and his fingertips) and whats up with the purple and blue around the match? Is that the oversaturation you're talking about? The dark areas and the lack of noise looks good though.

Please do not over analyse a compressed piece of footage on line. Even the downloadable version is a compressed H264. This is just to give you an idea of how clean it is. The purple fringing is from the lens I expect.

Id like to be clarified by his statements its cleaner at 3200iso than a 5dmkii, but not as sensitive.
Pretty contradicting since iso is a standard and all cams should perform similarly in sensitivity at similar iso.

If its cleaner at 3200 then it is much sensitive.

not true I am afraid. Different cameras are more or less sensitive at the same ISOs. Depends on the pixel count and other factors. I tested the GH2 against the GH1. The GH1 has fewer pixels. It was more sensitive at the same ISO as the GH2 but noisier.

Because I have just got off a plane from the US. I have barely any time with the camera. I am tired. I need to go to bed and everyone wants to see something. Hence, a quick and dirty test. I will be doing my proper filming on Thursday. My only fully day with the camera. Surely quick and dirty is better than nothing at all?

Philip... Thanks for the footage. I for one very much like your work and what you shot here. Special thanks for posting after jet lag! Can't wait to see your other opinions and results on this cam in the coming days!

Yes, it is better than nothing at all, and thanks so much for posting it Philip. It looks quite promising at low light. This is probably the most important clip we've got so far. Looking forward to more. Thanks for doing this before you hit the sack.

Phillip - I appreciate you putting the time and effort into shooting something proper, but surely you can see my point with regards to quick tests and the effects it has on this board. The other guys (and likely soon to be you...nothing against the footage that you shot, you just can't impress everyone) have been getting flamed and huge arguments have occurred. I just think that it can all simply be avoided.

It's like releasing an ungraded scene of a film without a score, just because people want to see something. What good does that do? It just creates conflict.

On thursday I will test as much as I can. Moire, rolling shutter, aliasing, resolution, sound. I will also record on my nanoflash for comparison. A lot to do in a very short space of time.

I adore my Canon DSLRs. This camera is exciting and way better in low light than I expected as it's based on the GH1 chip

I see. But im speculating its atleast not a whole stop of difference but more in the ballpark of the standard iso?

Anyway regardless, 1600 iso is already waaay over what i need. Thanks for the reply.

Philip,
Side by side ex1 i hope...would love to see where this would fare in resolution... I knw it will pass in moire, aliasing skew and lowlight.

The fringing around the flame is lens CA, I suspect. Anyhow, let's wait until we have a production camera in hand. Low light capability is critical for my particular needs, so that's what I'll be looking at most carefully.

Thanks for the footage - looks very clean for ISO 3200. I expect the actual footage out of the camera will have some fine CMOS noise that the web compression has eaten through though.

Is it a brand new chip? the info originally given out was it was baed on the GH1 chip.

Hi,

Yes it is a new chip altogether. Note the difference in how the GH1 handles the skew. This one clocks out much faster. Thanks for taking the time on this. I do appreciate your efforts.

Best,

Jan

Hi Philip, if you get a chance... can you test the Dynamic Range Stretch (if it is enabled).

Also some slow F-stop, wide shots to see just how much detail it will give.
