Periodical Workout Thread ...

I've always had a problem with motivation, ALWAYS. I used to play Ultimate Frisbee every day for 2 hours a day when I was in college, best shape I've ever been in! But sadly a busy schedule for 2 years has killed my exercise. I used to walk 2 miles every day to class as I didn't have a parking permit and that forced myself to take action as well, which worked out pretty well.

I used to be around 200lbs or so a few years back, I caught myself 2 months ago at 230 and told myself it had to end. I drastically changed my diet, I stopped drinking alcohol, I limited my soda intake to 1 a day (if that), drank water like it was endangered, ate more greens, actually started eating brakfast, all that good stuff. My only downside was I got about 4 hours of sleep a night and because I was so tired when I got home from my desk job I wouldn't work out, so because of that I've only lost 9 pounds in 2 months just from my diet.

Eating 6 meals in a day is almost impossible for me, I would love to but I shoot so much that I barely make 2 meals a day and I hardly have the time to work out...although here's the real motivation for me.

I'm working on a feature film in April, working from dusk to dawn pretty much which leaves my days completely open. Most of the time when I go to the gym it's not a matter of motivation, it's about actually finding the equipment to work out on! My gym is pretty cool, it's $10/month for 24hour access which is quite the deal. My roommate is a sports medicine major and works out almost daily, another good force to push me. So after I get off the shoot at like 6am I'm planning to pass out then wake up and hit the gym. I'm really holding myself to it this time around, I won't give myself a reason to quit as I have nothing holding me back.

So I'll keep this updated as well

I'd been going to the gym on a regular routine for weight lifting and, of course, right when I start to see gains I was taken out of commission by a combination of 2 terrible colds and a film contest. And of course, right when I finally start to reestablish my routine (last week) I tear something in my shoulder (I'm really hoping it's not my rotator cuff).

Of course, now I've supplemented my workout with Parkour, which probably doesn't help the injury - but it is the most intense/fun thing I've done in a while:D.

i didn't go to the gym today - i had a late night and 6:30 was just too early. I'm nice and sore from the previous two days though, i love that feeling!

I've been eating lots of smoked turkey (minus sauce) from a favorite BBQ place. Basically, I eat three "smart" meals a day and eat large bowls of oatmeal between them. That way I get 5 meals a day.

I've been doing lots of pushups and I can tell I'm definitely getting stronger. I do some pull ups on a apparatus I bought at Academy Sports. Pull ups will definitely kick your butt. They are very difficult to do (based on your weight to strength ratio).

I have yet to kick the cardio into gear. I bought a jump rope, but haven't used it very much. I plan to get my bicycle repaired so I can start riding again.

Turkey is my new meat of choice. I found some cajun infused weird stuff at the store that is fantastic. Not sure what the sodium is like on it. Probably should look. I like the 3 "smart" meals a day idea and something else in between. I need to find a quick easy oatmeal alternative, as I just am not an oatmeal fan. Tastes too much like oatmeal. 3 smart meals at least lets you interact with society still. I just see it tough with the occasional lunch time meeting or going out for dinner with friends but this would allow for that.

Equipment wise I think I'm going to get a powercage like this and be set for lifting and have a good pull up bar I can attach some rings to. Should keep it nice and compact. Also got the bug to build a full on bouldering wall in the garage. Its got ten foot walls and a good 15' of useable width to work with. I used to go play at the rock gym and loved it but it had odd hours and was a half hour drive. and was kind of expensive considering I rarely did any belayed climbing. Now if I can just go play in the garage for ten minutes a day on the wall that would be great. First I need to do some serious cleaning out though... That should be a good workout this weekend!

Cardio wise I'm looking at my old bicycle alot too. Needs some cleaning and greasing though. Maybe this weekend. I like our elliptical machine, but my wife uses it alot and it gets boring. If you want to borrow a dalmatian that doesnt understand "heel" let me know. Makes for a good tiring walk/run. I think I've got a pedometer somewhere... I need to start seeing how far we are going so I can keep track of all of this.

Yeah that is a nice feeling knowing that you accomplished something because you can feel it. I understand the late night early morning thing though. I didnt even have a late night and had to beat myself into walking the dog this morning.

You don't want to be sore after every work out. If you're constantly sore the day after that means you're overtraining your muscles which doesn't produce results.

some guys have stated their goals, like they want to weigh x amount, lift x amount, etc..

i guess my goals aren't to weigh a certain amount. i don't even know how much i weigh now. i just want to look good naked. haha

seriously though, one of my goals is to do a muscle up (which is crossfit talk for being able to hang from the rings, then pull yourself up, turn your arms into your body, and do a dip.)

you start from the hanging position and end in the finished dip position.

i can pull myself up just fine, it's that transition between the pullup and the dip that is killing me. it must be working some funky muscles that aren't used too often.

I surprised myself yesterday and was able to do 3 sets of deadhang pullups; this was after an hour and half of basketball and then an upper body weight slam.

Look good naked; muahahahahahaha!

No work out for me today as it's a rest day. Tomorrow it's 90 miles on the bike though.

jdajda,
Ground turkey is awesome. My GF and I pretty much substitute ground turkey in any dish that calls for ground beef.

GROUND TURKEY!! You're freaking brilliant! That just opened up a whole new world of things! Turkey Lasagna? Turkey Burger? Turkey Taco? This could be ok! And here I was stuck on turkey sandwich...

Thomas yeah I dont really have numbers based goals either. A general improvement would be good. My big goals though are to be able to go and run with the dogs without getting tired, to be able to go work in the yard all day and not feel like I got hit by a bus. To not be worn out after only unloading a bunch of production equipment, still needing to set it all up. Ultimately I'd like to be in good enough shape to get into some sort of martial arts, perhaps Krav Maga (just looks like fun), although I've got plenty of time to be figuring out what would be right for in that arena...

and yeah look good naked would be a plus... :)

90 Miles ?

My god. That's awesome.

My workout today will be at the beach, drinking.

Holy crap I just noticed the 90 miles! I dont even like driving that much in a day! Good for you adkimery! About how long does something like that take? By my rough estimates it would take me 2.5 weeks...

jdajda,

Yeah, ground turkey rocks. And once you season the meat (like if you were making tacos) it tastes almost exactly like beef tacos. Morning Star makes a good line of frozen faux-meat products (burgers, chick patties, corn dogs, sausage, bacon, etc.,) that is very good (and many times you can find it them on sale). I'm not big on "learning" to like new food and ground turkey and the Morning Star products just taste good. It's not like "eww... diet food... but its good for me." It's like "Mmm... this is good *and* it's good for me." Win/win situation for the win.

90 Miles ?

My god. That's awesome.
I've been training since Jan for a charity ride next weekend outside Phoenix (104 miles Sat, 50 miles Sun). I wanted to hit the century mark (100 mile ride) before the actual event just so I'd know what it felt like (and to cross the mental hurdle of doing a century ride) but I lost a couple weeks of training to an accident and another week to being sick. So 90 is as close as I'm gonna get. I feel confident I can do the ride next week in a decent time (decent for me at least as this is the first bike event I've ever done), but I just won't be as prepared for the ride as I wanted to be.

EDIT: The 90 miles will probably take me 7:00-7:30hrs, but that's in LA city traffic (so stopping at red lights every few hundred yards). My goal for the bike ride (100 miles on the open road) is to average 15mph so that means about 7hrs to finish the ride.

son of a ***** that would suck... pedal just to use dvxuser??

well the day is over and I havent done as much as I would like to but I feel like I did some good at least. Walked the dog for 20 minutes, and did another 20 on the elliptical at the nice low setting. Its got some wireless heart monitor thing. Pretty nifty and tells you when you are at your target heart rate. Good way to keep some pace. Eating was better than it has been today. Had a bagel with a little butter for breakfast, some pretzels in the morning, a jr bacon cheeseburger for lunch (was in a hurry), and a turkey sandwich for dinner. With some planning and some reading of Burn the Fat I'm hoping next week is a better dietary week :)

Wow... I saw a picture of myself and it wasn't good... :cheesy:

So...

I just got back from Ralph's (a grocery store for those that don't know) and bought 100 bucks worth of groceries BECAUSE I'm changing back to my low carb diet. It's the only thing that works for me and me going out and buying steaks and pork and everything means I'm serious about getting in shape. I'm not a big guy, but I'm pushing 20% BF, which SUCKS. My goal is 10 - 12% or even lower. Last time I was on this diet, I got down to 8% body fat... what a great feeling that was.

So...

I have the diet going as of tomorrow... I have the Bowflex Xtreme sitting in my living room (well, my only room since it's a single) and my weight bench beside it. I'm playing one of the roles in my own Timefest entry so the goal is to be at 12 - 15% body fat within the next 2 months - easily done, really. All I have to do is follow the low carb diet and the pounds literally melt off without me doing anything... when I eat a regular diet, I just seem to gain wait - not even eating junk food or fast food that often.

I'm not going to be doing any cardio cause it ain't my thing... 90 mile bike rides won't happen... :)

That's great Tom! I should calculate my BF but I'd almost rather not know... Screw it I'll go do it in a minute... I need to correct my diet as well, just deciding how to do so. Going the general "healthier" route for now.

ooh yeah I'm at 21% according to this place online... there's another number to improve...

Hey Jeff, definitely go the "healthier" route if that works for you. I've found that being on a low carb diet gives me a tremendous amount of energy while other's don't really get that effect. If I eat carbs, my energy plummets... even complex carbs like pasta or potatoes - my metabolism just doesn't like to break down carbs for some reason.
