GH5 Panasonic GH5S Press Announcement

Ok, so, now that the rumor mill has passed...

- Killer lowlight (better than EVA1)
- IBIS dropped
- no change to codecs (no 422 4k/60)
- DR is same @ 12 stops
- TC in/out
- near useless 240fps feature

Hopefully the GH6 will bring it all together. Until then, I'll probably end up getting this, just because I'm so invested in the platform and the GHx series is such a good tool... and the lowlight is actually better than EVA1... but unfortunately it's more of a specialty tool than I had hoped for. IBIS + 10bit 4k 60p 4:2:2 in this package would have been something truly special.

Its going to be a pass for me also, my shooting style requires IBIS way too much! I am also looking forward toward a GH6 that hopefully has the best of both cameras

This would kick ass as a b cam for the eva 1. Add a speedbooster xl, vlogL increases native iso to 800/5000, youve got a clean low light camera.

I am also passing cus they took away IBIS which is what I need along with low light for staying stealth, run n gun while shooting docs.

But at 2500 ISO it's still 12 F-stops, where the GH5 dynamic range is only 9.5 F-stops at 2500 ISO, and the Sony A7SII is only 11 F-stops at 2500 ISO.

Just as useless as the GH5 180fps feature.

The GH5s sensor has 14-bit color readout compared to the GH5 12-bit, so the color should be a little better than the GH5.

Agreed! And this is all good clarification. I had just grouped in the DR holding @ Dual ISO into "killer lowlight". And yeah, the GH5 180 is useless for pro work... and given that the codec hasn't expanded, 240 is just 180, but worse, with a crop in...

Yet even though there is plenty to be disappointed by here (if only because it's as if we can taste what this cam COULD be) it's still something to be excited about. The lowlight literally is better than EVA1, and this is also a sign of what's possible today with M43. The future is bright, this is a great tool today if you can live w/out IBIS, and if this performance had been shown less than a year ago when GH5 was being launched (and we never had tasted and seen of IBIS, etc.) we would have all been losing our minds.

Today is good. But the future of GHx line is clearly very exciting. I just hope Panny doesn't read into what may be a lackluster response as a lack of desire for this lower megapixel sensor, and rather realizes it's bit too much of a compromise with the IBIS for now, and an awkward timing for a launch without a couple other compelling launch points (ie the rumored 4k 60p 422 10-bit). It's too bad, because most of their target market already purchased the GH5 and this may not be enough to win them over given some of the losses, and many who didn't purchase may not see quite enough here to win them over... yet the product itself is a fantastic camera, just an awkwardly timed set of trade-offs for many.

I plan on buying a GH5s to go with my GH5, because I can't handhold 2 IBIS cameras at the same time... :-)

Lol, same :) I was about to buy a 2nd GH5 in December but held off for the GH5s. If I wasn't in that boat, I dunno, but I am happy to have another tool. Realistically I will only ever use this when I need extreme lowlight. EVA1 lead camera, with the GH5 used as alternative camera for everything outdoors or in good light thanks to IBIS. And the GH5s relegated to tripod shots when 3 cameras are needed, or those difficult indoor lowlight shots.

I think this camera is also going to be very popular for those who primarily shoot high speed footage. Having the extra room in the ISO to compensate for a 180 degree shutter at high frame rates is going to be incredible. I'm actually considering picking one up along with a handheld gimbal as a dedicated high speed b-roll combo. Coupled with a speedbooster and a fast lens, it could be pretty unbeatable for indoor slow-mo.

Nick Driftwood at PV said: There is NO improvement in terms of DR. Its just cleaner at high iSOs.

10mp sensor means no downsampling to create 4k so I wonder what the moire is like? Without IBS it's definitely an addition and not a replacement to the GH5 but I'll be waiting to see what the A7s3 is like before I'd consider it as a low light solution. My A7r2 in crop mode is pretty good at high ISO's as it is. Funny how people are now saying how much of an advantage the M43 sensor is over 'full frame' because it has greater DOF when almost always this is seen as a reason the M43 sensor is an inferior film making option and cannot be considered 'cinematic.....

Good luck waiting for something that even the rumor sites don't see coming anytime soon.

It is OK to about ISO12800 then the sparkling noise kicks in. That camera (i have one) is shockingly bad in FF mode at high ISOs, and cropping means no wide angles.

What they say is it is more flexible. For situations where a wider DOF is needed, it does have a 2 stop advantage. For situations where it is not needed, a .64x speedbooster can be used, or a .71x speedbooster with an F1.8 zoom.

But now there is a camera with 10 bit video that is as clean as the A7S at ISO12800 and ISO25600 before a speedbooster or before getting the 2 stop advantage for DoF.

And according to Sony's site while they do have a 4/3rds "STARVIS" sensor, they do not yet have one for FF. We don't know when or if there ever be one.

But here is what I think is most important. We've hit the "great enough" limit. A GH5s with an F/0.95 prime or a speed booster and an F/1.8 zoom is going to be able to shoot good 10-bit video in virtually total darkness. It will be able to shoot in indoors 240FPS video with a 1/450th of second shutter speed. That is more than enough for me.

Two different sensors are going to have two different color responses. Based on the transitions from the GH2>3>4>5 I would not expect Panasonic to have matched them. Building a LUT to match based on known values (target) under your actual lights will be the way to go. It's not hard, and it works. (I routinely match GH3 <> GH4 <> GH5)

Past two years there were no good Sony rumors. Sony simply do not create rumors anymore, it is their strategy. So who knows, maybe we will see a7s3 sooner than everyone expect. Panasonic's "rumors" are not rumors. Those are just leaked information on purpose. Panasonic wants to have rumors, look at the forums, they are full of buyers even before announcements. This strategy works in my opinion.

Do not agree. For crop you have plenty of options. You can even use speedbooster for cropped sensor for even more options.
