GH5 Panasonic GH5S Press Announcement

The big questions I still have that don't seem to be addressed in the initial reports I've seen are:

1) Has HDMI lag been improved?
2) Can Waveform and Vectorscope be output through the HDMI?

With a more video-centric model, I would really hope these issues would've been solved between the GH4/5 and the GH5S.

I'm completely floored how much better ISO 6400 looks on the GH5s vs the EVA1. If you absolutely must shoot low light with a Panasonic camera the GH5s is the camera to get.

To be fair DSLR cameras tend to have more aggressive noise reduction taking place in camera but still most people don't want to fart around with noise reduction in post so this is pretty darn huge.

The extra sensitivity isn't as much about pushing the camera in pitch dark situations as it is having a cleaner looking ISO400, 800, 1600, 3200 and 6400. That means cleaner details in shadows vs the GH5 which is pretty significant for V-log. Even if one always lights their shoots the GH5s could still handle noise better.

...Yeah, the last 4 camera shot at the end of this video is just crazy. I wish the author had posted this video in 4K, as 720p is not a great format to judge image quality with.

Here is the good link.

What I'm really luvin' is how the GH5s holds onto color fidelity at high ISO's, even more so than the lack of noise. You can always use NR in post, you can't resurrect lost color.

That is what struck me too. Very good image!

I can't help but think that if the DR was better then Panasonic would market and flaunt the daylights out of that spec. With that said a good solid clean 12 stops is a lot of DR. Not all cameras that claim 13 or 14 stops deliver a solid or clean 13 or 14 stops. We have to be very careful to not just listen to specs and actually see what the camera can do in the hands of somebody that knows what they are doing. Even though the GH5 "only" has 12 stops it has really held its own in most of the comparisons I have seen between higher DR cameras. Not saying those cameras couldn't have an advantage at times but that is most real world situations the DR subject comes up much less than many of us might expect.

Another comment about 14 stops of dynamic range at the 1:10 mark of the Jacob Schwarz BTS video I posted above...

That's so odd! Yup, he specifically points out 14-stops and then clarifies it with "you don't need to be afraid of contrast now."

I will look forward to some official word regarding what is going on here, but it seems odd that (1) there's no mention of this officially, and (2) multiple early users who were under NDA and looped in have intentionally pointed out "14 stops DR".

Go figure.

Thomas brings up good points, and I do wonder if there was some confusion in communications. IE that "ISO 2500 has 2 more stops of DR now" due to the Dual ISO feature not causing a loss in DR at high ISO. This would maintain it @ 12. I wonder if some people misunderstood and just heard "2 more stops of DR" and added that to the standard 12 (instead of adding 2 extra stops of DR to 10 stops @ 2500 ISO?)?

If the GH5s uses V-log L as opposed to the full V-log how could it have more than 12 stops?

I doubt it has 14 stops based on the V-log L but I think the 12 stops it does have is likely insanely clean in the shadows meaning you can expose under and still get very clean fine details.

Either way, this would be equivalent to a camera with 14 stops at low ISO ( like the Sony A7SII having 13 stops at low ISO ) that drops it's dynamic range to 12 stops when set to 2500 ISO. At 2500 ISO the GH5s would have 1 stop better dynamic range than the Sony A7SII does...

Amen! :D

Since I'm pretty DR obsessed and will be getting a GH5S on release, you can be sure I'll compare it vs my GH5 to see if there's really a difference.

Also, if the late January release date is right (I've seen late February mentioned too), then I will likely be shooting the world's first feature film on the GH5S, since I'm rolling cameras February 1st in Japan and would be able to buy one in the local shops before production starts. Fingers crossed!

Imaging-Resource.com : GH5s Review

At both 12,800 and 25,600, the GH5S looks slightly better than the A7S II at the same ISOs, which is both unexpected and subjectively highly impressive for a camera featuring a sensor that is a fraction the size of the other.

A sensor significantly smaller than the full-frame A7S II is beating that camera in low-light performance. I never thought I would see the day. With these test results, it's hard to argue that the GH5S is not the new king of low light.

Nothing that would make me want to sell my 2 GH5 cameras.

...get a tripod or shoulder support.

Nothing to do with moving the camera in my case...not a big fan of camera movement unless it comes from a Fisher Dolly or a very good slider...I do appreciate discretion however, so for me standing on a street corner handholding the camera...with IS lock engaged and being able to get a close to locked of shot, is big...but...different needs for different people...The Gh5s would have to be a second GH5 for me...I could see it as an addition...I don't see it as a replacement....very happy with my GH5...you are actually the only one mentioning that the GH5s does hold on to 12stops of DR which is a very big deal in this camera

At this point, I'm definitely not giving up my IBIS camera. Thomas, I own a rig, an O'Connor head, and even a $35 super lightweight shoulder brace solution probably similar to what you referenced. But, we still shouldn't make assumptions about what this or that person needs. I still can't do some of my required shots as well with the other support options. Some of it has to do with discretion as fboonzaier mentioned, other times it has to do with the look and feel once your on a really long lens, there is portability if in remote areas such as nature, and more. Sometimes you don't need to be discrete, but it affects your subjects less if you are.

Gimbals are not even remotely comparable. I'm rarely shooting with really shallow depth of field on my gimbal and also rarely shooting long lenses. Those are exactly the type of situations where Ibis is really useful.

Now, if we are talking about "in addition" then yeah, I see some VERY real improvements here. What they've pulled off from the 3200 range onward is not trivial and even with the smaller sensor, there are times when I shoot a presentation or talk from the back of the room and don't want to be wide open at 150mm with paper thin depth of field. It's nice to have an aperture range to choose from rather than wide open or bust.

Interestingly, the colors in most side by sides are different enough that I'd like to see what it's like to match them. If one does choose to own both for 2 cam shoots, it would be nice if they matched well. I have a GH4 and GH5 and they don't match all that well. I make it work after some massaging, but it's still noticeable to my eyes.
