GH5 Panasonic GH5S Press Announcement

Wow!

Wow!

Not only does it shoot at a wider angle, but it kills the Sony A7S when DoF is taken into account.
It appears to be as good as the A7S in many situations - 10 bit vs. 8 bit will do that, but if the A7S needs to be stopped down to get subjects in focus, the GH5S jumps way ahead.

How do you mean? The A7S still performs better at higher ISOs. (as it should, having much bigger pixels)

The A7S also only really has an advantage from an engineering and marketing perspective. It isn't very realistic to shoot at ISO 12,800 and above due to how highlights and light sources are blown up and the dynamic range butchered. The A7S may allow for lazy shooting in pitch dark but most of us don't or shouldn't be doing video that way. The fact that the GH5S can look very clean up to ISO 3200 and only have a slight amount of noise at ISO 6400 pretty much covers most professional complex shooting situations with the minimal of cheap light kit use. You can get a $100 set of LED lights to work exceptionally well at ISO 6400.

The GH5S also has dual native ISO which means that even if it is still a 12 stop dynamic range camera you can now get that 12 stops at ISO 2500 vs the 9 or 10 stops you would normally have at that ISO level. Thats pretty huge if you want to keep consistent quality between your outdoor and indoor shots.

Couple other minor advantages:

1. Slightly wider FOV due to the lack of IBIS and the multi-aspect sensor
2. Longer battery life since the IBIS isn't sucking up the battery power
3. Push past most FF cameras in terms of low light. 2 stops better ISO handling plus adding a Speedbooster means potentially 3 stops advantage over the GH5 and 4 stops over the GH4. Most FF cameras besides the A7S are about 2 stops better.
4. Less potential for moire or aliasing due to a 1:1 sensor like we had on the GH4. Some people have run into issues where they can get moire on the GH5. It doesn't happen often but it can and will happen.
5. Closer to FF FOV with a Speedbooster and the multi-aspect sensor. SB already gets us to APS-C levels and the multi-aspect sensor gets us somewhere in between APS-C and FF.
6. Slightly better rolling shutter due to a faster pixel readout because of less pixels.
7. Timecode is a massive time saver if you do multi camera shoots with an audio recorder and want to import your material and have perfect sync in seconds to start editing. Very important for production companies where time is money. I have a friend that uses Tentacle Sync with his two GH5s and one GH4 and a Zoom H8 audio recorder and he would love to not have to mess with an external audio sync tool anymore. Would change his life dramatically.

Is there a difference of DR compared to the GH5? I heard someone say 14 but highly doubt that.

Even if it is only the same 12 F-stops the GH5 has, it's still 12 F-stops at 2500 ISO. Where DXOMark shows the Sony A7SII having 11 F-stops at 2500 ISO : DXOMark Sony A7SII Measurements
Thanks for the link! So the GH5s seems like a really great camera. I own the GH4 and the C100 and looking for a new camera to do 4K and HFR. The GH5s seem to be a good option for the price.
