GH4 Panasonic GH5 coming in 2017

ProRes can't be an industry standard until Apple open it up to encode on Windows PCs.

As long as it remains Mac only it's never going to be useful to 90% of the world as a proxy or main format.

So how can companies like Atomos and Blackmagic encode to Prores if it isn't an open standard? Is its lack of support on Windows due to Apple not releasing the spec, or just to Apple not providing the codec on Windows?

I'm all for open standards, but I don't think that Apple is under any obligation to invest in implementing and supporting any codecs on Windows.

Apple controls ProRes encoding on PC in order to try to force people to buy Macs. That is anything but being open.

By the way it is easy to encode ProRes on a PC just use ffmpeg. The quality is great however it is not optimized for multi-threading.

Miraizon used to sell a ProRes codec on Windows but they got bought out....

I was assuming up to 60p VFR FHD 10bit would be available in firmware update... why would FHD be locked to same as 4K 30p 10 bit?? I'll be quiet disappointed if it's 30p in FHD only

That's not true. Apple not investing a competitor's ecosystem is different from "controlling" it. In fact, both Adobe and BMD have indicated that they are working on their own ProRes implementations. (Anyone can license ProRes.)

Companies like Atomos pay a licensing fee to use Prores...because to make their recorders competitive and because clients demand it, it's one of the costs of doing business...

Woohoo!

Paul, any chance you (or anyone) can confirm it's not just 1080p 59.97 (60p) mode that supports 10-bit, but 24p with VFR enabled and selectable and regular intervals up to 60p? Seems obvious, but I always get nervous these sorts of details might be potentially missed... really hope it's in 1.1 as I have a big project next month I want to use that mode on!!!

VFR modes are only in 8bit at present, in all resolutions, unfortunately. It would be awesome to have VFR available in 10bit modes where not constrained by hardware, so I hope Panasonic will make this happen in a future firmware update.

There are actually quite a few companies that license ProRes, here is a complete list from Apple's website:
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT200321

Many of the companies that license ProRes use it in hardware products, and of the software products that license ProRes, many do so for ProRes decoding only. But there are some software products with officially licensed ProRes encoding on platforms other than OS X, including Elemental Server (which runs on Linux) and Assimilate Scratch (which runs on Windows):

There are also unlicensed ProRes encoder implementations for Windows, such as the one included with FFmpeg:

Now that the GH5 is a known entity I really hope the GH6 will have ProRes internal recording.

Would like some opinions on skin tones here. This is V-Log , 10 bit, using the Varicam Lut.

These look good :) If you don't mind my asking, would you be able to share an ungraded PNG still frame of both of those shots, to test with my own LUT and see how they compare? Because I find my own LUT to be much better normally than Panasonic's official release. I'd much appreciate it!

Cheers,

Paul :)

Does anyone have any idea how to remove the autofocus bracket from the screen when recording? Even in fully manual, it will not go away in any display mode. Very annoying to have that sitting in the very center of the screen.

Also, the LCD changing brightness even when the setting isn't on auto, seems to be a bug. Hopefully will be fixed in a firmware update.

No idea on the bracket but I have the same issue with the LCD screen changing brightness. I checked the footage later and it was ok but the screen had a very underexposed look for a few minutes and then came back to normal.

same with my LCD, still seems to be on auto adjust even when it's set to manual.

This is my single biggest complaint with the camera at this point. Lots to love otherwise, but dimming down sooo soon and needing to press half shutter or something to get it to wake up is really irritating. My assumption is that it was a decision made because they realized that we were gonna throw a fit about the regressive battery performance and decided to save battery juice wherever possible. Either way, it needs to be changed.

Yes I read elsewhere that someone contacted Panny about this and were simply told it's a battery saving feature. Fine, but this needs to be made optional. I understand it being on by default but as pros, we should be able to choose if we'd like to burn through battery VS have our screen go dim 30 seconds into recording in bright sunlight...

Feel free to believe that, I believe otherwise!

Apple, in my opinion, is very anti open software.
And when it comes to customer support I assume everybody still remembers Apple's "support" of Quicktime for Windows.

Not giving your valuable IP to competitors is not the same as a strategy to force people to buy Macs. Windows software makers are free to choose to license ProRes. Adobe can afford it. ;-)
