GH4 Panasonic GH5 coming in 2017

I looked at that down vote and thought about it for quite some time. I had a similar reaction, but I'm not yet convinced that there is a reading of the Dusty's post that makes a downvote legitimate. I don't know what the interpretation is, but I think there is possibilities. For example, you may interpret Dusty's posting as an insult. Suppose the downvoter is Mark Toal, the videographer of that piece.

If there is a legitimate reason for the downvote, I'd like to hear it from the person that gave the downvote. It leaves you wondering what's up.

I didn't downvote Dusty's post (I ever only downvoted 2 posts in all my years on DVXuser), but I can see how his post could be taken as insulting, fwiw. A case can be made, seems to me. I mean, we assume we are among people who have mutual respect for each other, and all here are grownups. So why would Dusty - completely unprompted - make such an insulting remark, as if it applied to anyone reasonable? When have you ever met a person who thought that the camera is what makes the picture? I mean, I suppose such people exist, perhaps pre-teens, but nobody reading this board would qualify. So Dusty's remark comes across as incredibly condescending, as if we need to be told such a forehead-slapping obvious truism as 'it's the person behind the camera, not the camera', the artist not the brush, the archer not the arrow etc. What are we here, pre-schoolers? So if none of us here need to hear such petty remarks, one wonders what the point of making them is. You wouldn't burst into a meeting of mathematicians and proclaim gravely "2+2=4". You hold the people around you in enough regard that you don't need to make such remarks - who exactly is supposed to benefit from such remarks? And if nobody here benefits, why make them?

Anyhow, I don't personally think it's a big deal, but since a discussion erupted over it, and Paul F wondered how anyone could think ill of Dusty's remark, I thought I'd show how - devil's advocate.

That said, I don't think it's very becoming of us to walk around dropping patronizing remarks - it's liable to make us seem elitist, patronizing and clueless all at the same time. Share expertise, not contempt. Share advice, not patronizingly look down on others. A post that makes a positive contribution, not attack the supposed "ignorant" other. All IMHO, YMMV.

I would argue that we ALL fall into this line of thinking from time to time, usually without even realizing it. Hell, I do the same thing with golf clubs! I don't mind being reminded every so often that if I suck at shooting either images or balls, neither a RED Weapon nor a set of Calloways is gonna make much difference if I don't get out there and shoot, shoot, shoot. Which totally blows my "I spend all my money on camera gear" excuse for sucking at golf.

Wow, controversy. Let me ask you...Do your images get better with experience over time, or with some magical camera? Or, will some inexperienced shoot overnight become a great image maker because of a camera they bought? Gear helps, that is for sure. But experience sure goes a long way.

It's like the ever reoccurring theme seeking cameras with more DR. Without calling anyone out, how many times have you seen post's from people complaining about 13 stops of DR when other camera supposedly have 14 or 15 stops DR. Like their obsessed with it? I always just shake my head thinking about how good young photographers and filmmakers have it. You wouldn't have lasted a week in the photographic industry before digital. I know lot's of you are "photographers" too. Maybe some of you should run down to the camera store and pick up some Fugi Velvia, or Ektachrome and have a go at 8 stops DR tops. With it's top speeds of 100 ISO.

So, I made a comment. "Proof that a camera won't make you a master". Time behind one however, will lead you down the path to becoming one.

Let me ask another question...How many of you have bought every irritation of the Sony A series? A7s, A7sII, A7RII, and maybe planning on a future A7?. Because as I see it, the first A7s is 98% as effective as the last one released. Did you images improve even 10% over the previous version? (other than things like internal 4k on the A7rII). Don't talk about the mechanics of the camera. Think about the results you achieved. Did they vastly improve?

Wanna improve your shooting and minds eye? Go out and take some pictures this week. Take a piece of black gaffe tape and cover your LCD and just use your camera meter (or a handheld meter, if you own one) and your mind and shoot only Jpeg. This way you can't look at your LCD and see your instant result. Go home and review your Jpegs. This exercise will help you in evaluating a scene and reading it with your eye, mind, and vision.

Will the Gh5 rock? It will rock if you have the ability to make it rock.....

(Or we can have 35 more pages complaining about Dynamic Range???? Especially base off a camera in which all images you've seen are out of a beta camera).

I agree.

By the way, while the blue channel is rather noisy I am happy with the dynamic range:

I thought Dusty made a good point and one I've heard many times. One of the other ones is people will forgive the image not being as good if its a good story and also how important the audio sounds. If the audio sucks the video won't matter anyway. The audio in the Bluegrass vimeo video wasn't good. Crowded little bar were you hear lots of crowd noise. If this guy is a training representative for Panasonic he didn't do to good on this Vimeo video and I won't base my decsion on buying the GH5 on it.

I still wonder why he had a GH5 and was allowed to post it something from a crowded noisy bar at 3200! Seems like Panasonic controls that pretty good before a release.

Well said!!!

Panasonic reps need to know their own gear, even if they are not experts at using it.

An engineer, sales person or one who works in marketing doesn't have to be a cinematographer just because they work for a company that creates cameras. I have worked at manufacturing companies and none of the people in those positions could use the products with the same craft as the customers could.

This was clearly a situation where the person happened to have the camera and happened to be out somewhere and thought they would get a few shots. Perhaps they were impressed they could actually get a shot in those horrible conditions and thought others would feel the same. The shot may be ugly as sin but I think the desire was to show that the camera could actually manage to grab something in those conditions. Sadly these conditions are a benchmark to some shooters.

Jim it's starting to seem like you enjoy complaining about cameras rather than shooting with ANY of them. Panasonic is going to move so many of these units it's not funny. There's also no rule on owning only one camera. The bmpcc/gh4 combo covers a lot of situations.

I see why Jim is salivating for the biggest dynamic range he can get and keeps saying BMPCC. I looked at the video samples on his website and there it is: Men in black tuxes in the shadows of trees while the bride, dressed in white, stands in the sun. For Jim, big dynamic range is a priority.

Jim, perhaps you should ignore the GH5 threads as they only frustrate your desire for more DR. This just isn't the camera for you.

I read on gh5 fb group that bh will start shipping when they recieve them around or on feb. 11th. can anyone else confirm? I sent them an email to make sure but it seems real.

Many countries have the DC-GH5L package which is the GH5 combined with the 12-60mm Leica/Panasonic lens for a discount.
Anybody knows if it will be(come) available in the USA as well?
I know they sell it in Canada but I am worried about warranty.

This. Everyone shoots different... content wise and stylistically. I understand the positivity as well as the frustration at negativity. There's some incredibly good filmmakers and cinematographers on both ends of the spectrum here and it's antagonizing to either party to imply that a great camera is either inadequate, or that the desire of a certain spec is implicating a lack of skill.

Let's all just get along and candidly agree the GH5 is a stellar camera with it's comparative weakness (to other modern cameras) being it's 1-1.5 stops short of "ideal" (by todays standards) DR.

Whether you care or not is your business so lets validate everyone who holds a dissenting opinion to ours, and then go buy the camera we want, write Panasonic with any thoughts, and keep the discussion productive and fact oriented. Cool? Sound good? YAY!!!!!!!!!

That would be insanely wonderful as I pre-ordered on day 1 and want this camera bad, now, but I can't imagine the camera is going to be 1.5 months ahead of launch schedule. These things usually go the other way around. Reading on a "FB group" doesn't sound like the most reliable source, unless it was direct from B&H?
