GH4 Panasonic GH5 coming in 2017

Matt F. is a sant. If I had to deal with people like me all day, I'd be in jail. ;-)

Well worth the watch. I was particularly glad to see that the programable focus points can be queued on command, as some other information implied that it was on a timer. He also did a nice job of explaining how using the full sensor and better processing yields better low light performance.

More confirmation of the same bad 24p HDMI lag. He does a rolling shutter test at 46:20 in 24p and you can see the delay. Especially watch when he stops panning back and forth, and when the image stops on the screen. Before this test, he does the same at 4k 60p, which has virtually no lag. Interestingly, the next test he does is 1080 60p, which has a slight lag, not as good as at 4k 60, but better than 4k 24p. I wonder if it would be possible for them to offer an option that monitors out in 60p, but records internally in 24. They already have a similar option for audio monitoring (realtime/recorded).

Matt seems to confirm that the GH5 IBIS works with the Metabones Speedbooster XL towards the end of this video. Well.... he doesn't explicitly say it won't work haha. Starting at 57:45.

Watching the whole video will give greater context because topics get reiterated throughout. The key thing is Matt was attempting to demonstrate the 5 axis IBIS, an audience member offered his own Sigma 18-35 plus SB for the test, and a misunderstanding led to a different lens being used. It seems to me that Matt would say something if the XL would have caused any problems.

Maybe, but you're definitely making a leap to assume that. ;-) To my knowledge nobody has tried it, and since the XL is soooo close on the GH4, there's also a chance that shutter could get in the way if IBIS requires some extra clearance.

Isn't the XL going to vignette as well since it is really designed for the cropped 4k on the GH4. I Don't think the XL is going to be a very good option on the GH5. Some FF lenses may be fine. Some lenses already don't work well with the XL and GH4 when shooting stills or FHD which uses the full sensor scaled down. Same thing will be true of 4k on the GH5.

Nah, there is plenty of clearance between the two. It's the black magic design speedbooster that is extremely close.

The Metabones Speedbooster XL covers the full Micro Four Thirds sensor area which measures 17.3mm x 13mm and has an image circle diameter of 21.6mm. Full frame lenses are designed to cover a full frame sensor area which measures 36mm x 24mm with an image circle diameter of 43.3mm, which as you would expect is double the image circle diameter of Micro 4/3 (hence the 2x crop factor).

The Speedbooster XL has a .64 focal reduction, which means that full frame lenses should cover an image circle of about 27.7mm which is quite a bit larger than the 21.6mm Micro 4/3 image circle. So the vast majority of full frame lenses should work fine without vignetting on the Speedbooster XL.

Now with the GH4 due to the crop factor in 4K recording it was possible to use the Speedbooster XL with lenses designed for APS-C sensors, but on the GH5 these lenses may vignette, since there is no crop factor in any of the recording modes. APS-C lenses are designed to cover a sensor area of 23.6mm x 15.7mm or about a 28.3mm image circle. The .64x reduction of the Speedbooster XL would take this down to 18.1mm which is smaller than the 21.6mm Micro 4/3 image circle, which is why there may be vignetting. Some APS-C lenses cover a larger image circle than the bare minimum, and shooting in 16:9 further reduces the effective image circle that needs to be covered (over the full 4:3 aspect ratio Micro 4/3 sensor). So a lens that vignettes significantly when shooting a full sensor 4:3 photo may vignette less severely when shooting 16:9 video.

It's pretty easy to test the coverage of lenses on the GH4 using 1080p recording modes, since these modes used the full sensor width. This should be very similar to performance on the GH5 in all recording modes.

Now, all of this assumes that there are no mechanical clearance issues with the Speedbooster XL and the GH5. Until it is tested on the camera, it's not clear that Speedbooster XL will actually fit the camera. The Speedbooster XL has mechanical clearance issues with most Olympus cameras and some Panasonic cameras released to-date:
http://www.metabones.com/products/details/MB_SPEF-m43-BT3

Note that the SpeedBooster XL does work with several of the more recent Panasonic cameras (since the GH4) that have IBIS, including the GX8 and GX80/GX85. So it may be fine, but no guarantees of a mechanical fit with the GH5 until it's tested though.

All of the speculations about the speed booster did not include the enlarged image circle due to the IBIS moving the sensor. Panasonic has a ready indicated that the image sensor is larger than m4/3 to include for the sensor movement.

There's 1mm of clearance on the GH4, per Metabones. Hopefully it will be fine...

Based upon the GH5 photos, the top section of the GH5 does not stick out as much as the GH4 does because it no longer contains the pop-up flash, so it looks like there will be more room for Speedboosters to mount on the camera.

What was interesting to me was the fact that you need to shoot with an electronic zoom lens with no speedbooster so that the camera's 5-axis stabilization system knows the exact focal length you are shooting with. This means that you can use the zoom and the camera will automatically adjust the 5-axis IS to match the actual focal length you are shooting with. With manual zoom lenses you would have to keep programming the camera with the new focal length every time you use the zoom.

What's also good news is that the 5-axis IS works just fine with Canon EF mount zoom lenses. ( along with Panasonic and Olympus electronic zoom lenses )

Regarding anamorphic mode and lenses, the SLR magic 3x prime kit of 35, 50, 70... I'm confused about effective focal length.

How does 2x crop factor of M43 come into play when dealing with the 2x squeeze? My understanding is that with traditional anamorphic, if you shoot with a 50mm lens you get 100mm compression look, but with a FOV of a 50mm.

Anyway, what's effective FOV and compression look of the SLR 35? If the 2x crop still applies, does that give that lens a 70mm FOV with 140mm compression look?

If so, that seems semi useless for that lens set? What would be cool is shooting at wide 20-24mm equivalent FOV with a nice 50mm compression.

Also, what's better about using the actual native m43 SLR magic anamorphic lenses VS using the anamorphic adapter?

Haha yeah I have some hopeful assumptions :) I realize that company policy is probably not to test or talk about third party accessories like the Metabones, but Matt is a real shooter so I thought he may have some personal input. Especially considering he was *this* close to actually mounting it to the GH5 in that video haha.

2x anamorphic lenses are like having a 0.5x wide angle adapter that effects horizontal FOV only. So a 35mm has a vertical FOV of a 35mm and a horizontal FOV of a 17.5mm. Which means that often times you reach for a longer lens than when shooting spherical and that's what can cause an increase in compression in anamorphic films. (you use an 85 or 100mm lens a lot more often because they still offer generous horizontal FOV.

Using the whole 4:3 17.3x13mm sensor with a 35mm anamorphic lens will offer something pretty close to exactly what you mentioned would be nice actually. But that SLR magic 35mm leaves a lot to be desired from what I've seen.

We're not taking about external clearance. We're talking about the internal distance between the SpeedBooster's glass element and the camera's shutter guard. The XL seats this element closer to the sensor than the Ultra.

Biggest advantages over anamorphic adapters is that you only have to focus one lens and there's no hassle of dealing with diopters for certain focal lengths.

SLR Magic makes a Rangefinder that screws on the front of your anamorphic adapter...I own a Kowa 2X...you then set the taking lens and the adapter to infinity and lock off with gaffers tape and focus using the Rangefinder...shooting anamorphic is beautiful but time-consuming though...

Crazy thing I love the idea of shooting anamorphic for a music video if it called for it, but I just can't find any anamorphic footage I'm too impressed with. It all seems to have a weird distortion or barrel roll to it, and most of the online tests are "tests" of people shooting medioce stuff.

Don't want to veer OT but any great samples I may have missed that can make me go "oohhh... yeah. Anamorphic. Sold"

Yeah, I don't think Anamorphic on DSLR's is worth the hassle. Most of the footage I've seen has issues. If you want that waterfall/oval shaped bokeh, you can just slap one of these on the front of your lens. http://www.vid-atlantic.com/products/cinemorph. I actually had my wife print up a similarly shaped insert on her Silhouette that I put between my lens and my speedbooster. Worked just as well, but you lose a stop with these.
