GH4 Panasonic GH5 coming in 2017

While the GH5 sounds very exciting, I think the whole firmware path at multiple intervals has made the release quite a mess as far as knowing what the camera can and can't do. Not a big fan of releasing products this way.

Well, that's one take, but my glass is overflowing with the internal 10-bit 4:4:2 4K, 4K 60p, 5-axis IBIS, significantly better high-ISO performance, full sensor readout to keep my wides wide, much improved rolling shutter skew, 4K ETC, etc etc. Order & deposit in today for this latest in the line of transformational, groundbreaking GH bodies. I've had 'em all.

That's really how everyone does it these days. Multiple firmware updates throughout the year(s) should keep coming to make the camera(s) better and better.

I use a Delkin USB 3.0 card reader that maxes out at 140 MB/sec when transferring video from my Lexar UHS-II cards. Given how the data transfers ( it stays maxed out for most of the transfer ) I get the feeling that USB 3.0 is not able to transfer any faster than this. ( portable USB 3.0 hard-drives also max out at this data-rate )

In theory USB 3.1 should be able to transfer data at 1.67 times USB 3.0 speed, which would mean 233 MB/sec transfers, but I would need a USB 3.1 computer and USB 3.1 card reader to realize this speed boost...
Just for info, USB3.0 can easily handle over 500MB/s, so 140MB/s shouldn't be taxing the bus unless there's another bottleneck further down the chain. Check your system....

Also, the SanDisk UHS-II reader is another option for UHS-II cards. I have it and it works well :)

HTH!

Cheers,

Paul :)

I agree. The GH5, around NAB time in 4 months will still do an amazing amount of stuff that the major camera manufacturers have resisted FOR YEARS. The color looks really great, almost all of the appreciable irritants of DSLRs and some things with the bigger cameras are being removed with this release. If the camera lives up to the images we are seeing on release. Panasonic have really taken the gloves off with this camera. Should be interesting to see what the other manfacturers come out with.

Typically when we see an early release in relation to NAB with a TON of amazing features, they are doing it to get mindshare because they know another manufacturer is going to come out with something similarly as good. However, it sure feels like they have a done a home run with this camera. Time will tell.

Point is ..... you don't need a card reader at all. You don't take the cards out of the camera. You could connect from the USB-C port on the GH5 into a USB-C port on the laptop, if it has one, and transfer directly.

Not sure if anyone asked this question before. Does anyone know if it's possible to uninstall V-Log from GH4 and install it to GH5?

A first look video on a pre-production GH5. Lots of marketing hoo-haa in it but the footage shown is informative...

According to the video, if you preorder the GH5 you get V-Log for free.

Mbps: megabits per second
MB/s: megabytes per second

I'm not trying to nitpick about spelling or grammar. The difference is a factor of 8, and if you go around reading specs for cables, drives, etc., trying to piece together a system, it will really help to keep in mind this subtle difference.

Little b means bit. Big B means byte. A byte is 8 bits.

Yep. The numbers I wrote are exactly as intended :)

GH5 NEW FEATURES! (I have asked most of them for years, thanks Panasonic)
-auto iso in M with EV comp and with auto iso range setting.
-min shutter speed limit.
-iso100 for video! (This is great for noise and bright light)
-folder and file custom naming
-the whole camera status save/load option to SD card (ability to share settings between GH5s) My idea in many forums.

He is the first one to say Panasonic 400Mbps mode was held off for the new V60 & V90 SDXC cards to be more available.
