GH4 Panasonic GH5 coming in 2017

If the gh5 has the dr and nativr iso of an a6300, thats good enough. Sensor size isnt a problem. Thats what speedboosters are for.

But, what if the bear could win Tour de France while also juggling a beach ball and playing on his iPhone?

Metaphor-Olympics. Great....... But: Bear metaphors become overbearing when stretched too far... ;-)

Okay - what we know or hear rumor-wise from the "my friend is a tester"-league seems to be, above the already mentioned things, dual-stabilisation (own a GX80/85 since a few days, works better than expected also for video and, yes, I know, it's primarily for handheld....) and - my all time personal favorite - a "normal" HDMI-port. Will ask my dealer over here to place a pre-pre-order.

Hope the camera comes earlier than the next Tesla.

Okay it was said and so I went back and looked at the Cinema 5D video and the Panny guy said it does have an MFT mount. So the thing I'd like to know if I buy a GH4 now to get a project shot, would all the side goodies you need to buy work with the GH5 as well. lol I don't see that has a big trade secret. But that could just be my .02 opinion.

Thanks... so don't purchase a recorder unless you can pay it off before the camera comes out with or at least save some more pennies for an update on the recorder.

I can see you have your claws out for me. (ein wenig Wortspiel ... or is it, "kleine Wortspiel"?)

BTW, the famous 43Rmors site confirms full size HDMI (and guesses about an extra stop of DR to go with it).

"Ein kleines Wortspiel" would be okay..... I like Wortspiele a lot. Especially as English is the much better language for that than the Teutonic dialect. Mark Twain said it perfectly well: "German has words so long they have a perspective". It' s like making Wortspiele with a shelf unit at times, in German. Only logical I land flat on my nose if I try it at times in English... ;-)

Pre-pre-order out. I understand a lot of people and their criticism of certain aspects in the Lumix-line of products. But, coming late to digital from film and having started with the GH1 and having made a lot of mistakes and nurtured unrealistic hopes concerning their products in the beginning (sorry for having littered also this forum here with that), I have grown to be a rather happy customer over the years. Adjust expectations to reality. Go on. Shoot. And the Lumixes are usually mind-boggingly capable cameras for the price. Waiting now.

Why do you say 400mbps? Do you have a scientific reason why it should be 400mbps or are you just throwing out numbers?

Really just throwing out numbers. It's based on the idea that I-frame takes roughly twice the data rate of IBP, and I'd like twice the data rate for 4K that we now have (especially when shooting 4:2:2). I combine those doublings to get 400 Mb/s. It seems like a very "practical" ask for the GH5, given camera and card capabilities.

I think 200mbps is a very realistic expectation and I would be shocked if we didn't have at least that on the GH5. The GH4 already supports 200mbps capable cards for HD so a bump in processing speed for 4k means 200mbps for 4k would be extremely possible and realistic. Any higher is anybodies guess. 4:2:2 and 10bit do however require more data so I agree that I hope it does go higher. We also have to wonder how many people would actually se 400mbps. A card that once could shoot 40 minutes at 100mbps would now only get 10 minutes. Fine for narrative work but it wouldn't be very practical for event video. So if they do provide a 400mbps mode I hope they also provide multiple lower increments to fit the users needs.

Personally I will still likely be using an external recorder and not really worrying about the internal format very much. IPB is IPB and while great for the reduced file sizes any time you have a smaller format something is getting tossed in the trash. Even ProRes422 HQ is highly compressed (think jpg vs png images) and that is over 8x larger than 100mbps 4k. Motion prediction is still motion prediction with the key word being prediction. A IPB format even with a high data rate is using a computer to judge what is good enough to keep. I would rather have a format that keeps all of it and lets me judge what to do with it. Plus using a HDR capable monitor with LOG support really makes a huge difference vs the camera LCD so I would likely never want to use the camera sans an external monitor ever again.

I haven't thought of it but I guess if you have a twenty consonant word, then making puns out of it gets pretty difficult. Once you get (a widely used example) - Donaudampfschiffahrtsgesellschaftskapitän - it's pretty hard to twist it onto its side.

I think this new generation of sub-$2,000 enthusiast/pro cameras is also the last generation without the compressed Raw capabilities. Given the speed and size of the new media formats, even a very lightly compressed (3-6 times) Raw should be coming out with the next series of products around 2018-19. Hypothetically, an SDI out to an external recorder should be doable right now (and it is on the ~ $6,000 FS-5 Raw package and on the $4,000 FS-700R) anyway.

Anyone want to take a stab at pricing? With a few unknowns other than rumors like IBIS and full HDMI plus the codec and bit rates I'm gong to say it's going to over over $2000 and closer to $2500. A Sony full frame a7r II is $3200 so I think as of today....

$2500 for body and $150 for new improved V-Log option.

The GH4 launched at $1699, that would be quite a jump. Is there precedent for a price increase that large in a successor like this?

If the camera and it looks to be a big advancement with some features a $2000 YAGH offered then my thinking is it will be more than the former model.

Panasonic could experiment and charge more if they know there will be a big demand for it. Then can drop price later if needed.

I would like it for less than $2K too...but how many people would buy it for $3K? Probably a lot.
