GH4 Panasonic GH5 coming in 2017

The U3 rating on SD cards does not mean they all have the same minimum read speed in the real world , that is a rating defined by the SD Association . Do a benchmark test on the 1000x and 2000x using the UHS-II reader in a USB 3.0 slot and you will see the 2000x has a much faster data rate from minimum to maximum. The 2000x card minimum is at least 60MB/s today but there is no U6 standard yet and the 2000x card is ready for 4K @60fps today.

That could be, but you are paying a real premium to be on the cutting edge.
By the time 60MBs sustained write speed is actually used in a camera, the price for a larger capacity and faster SDXC card will be less than what you paid today.

PS When is the GH5 going to be announced?
I thought it was supposed to be CES but even the rumor mill has stopped.
Will it be CP?

The early rumors insinuate the PhotoKina in mid-late September. As a biannual show, it's sort of a big deal.

IMO, a lot will depend on Panasonic's plans for a pro line camera below their $60,000 Varicam. If they got one, it will be shown at the NAB and the staggered series of announcements make sense. If they ain't got one for the NAB ...

Late edit : I forgot (having mentioned it previously ... so, duh on me) that Panasonic will have GF8 revealed at the CP+. The camera has already been registered in China. It is basically GF7 with 4K. As I'd brought up in a CES related post, the consumer products set the base for the features that the "enthusiast, aka prosumer" and pro products have to exceed. In that sense, GF7 should be a 4K camera for under $500 (GF7 was $459) retail, lens included.

There haven't been any 'real' rumors about GH5 yet. Only forum users' speculation and wishful thinking.

I first used the 2000x card with my GH4 for faster 4K uploads but now only use it on my NX1. I use lower cost 128GB UHS-I U3 SDXC cards with my GH4 now. Panasonic will talk about new cameras at CES in Las Vegas @10am PST or 1PM EST (NYC etc).

Hopefully the GH5 will support UHS -II at it's highest speed.
Then if it has 4k 60P or 1080P120 we will also have the choice of 200+ bits per second codec.

D500 is a better stills camera than GH4 and a somewhat similar 4K cameras (GH4 might have an advantage over the HDMI output). With that in mind, GH5 will have to deliver a far superior video to D500 or a much lower price. GX8 is currently $1,100 and, even if it goes down to a grand later on, making a $1,300 GH5 seems too close for comfort. Looking at the $1,500-$1,700 range then, the video features packed into that package should be pretty nice.

The GH5 has to be much better than the GH4 in low light to compete with my preordered D500.
I am talking clean ISO 6400-10000
4k P60 &/or 1080P120 would also help to justify a >$1795 price

UGH, I so hope Nikon can get their act together on video - because I have a ton of Nikon glass, which I've gathered for years and years starting with my first F3 body. But after giving me hope with the D90, Nikon went AWOL. I completely lost hope and went Panasonic m4/3, and was never happy with that size sensor... but I've been sparing with buying m4/3 glass and mostly used my Nikkors with adapters (though I did buy the panny 12-35 f/2.8 to begin with). Nikon are idiots - nothing to protect in their video lineup, and they still can't find their a$$es with two hands and a flashlight. There is always something wrong with Nikon DSLRs as far as video. Will 2016 be any different?

They're not idiots. They're playing the role that was allotted to them by the cartel - which is medium and high end photo market. Panasonic has the low end 4K ILC's to themselves. Sony has the medium 4K market. Canon the high end. It's all scripted.

They made real headway with the D90. I actually liked it better in every way than my 5DII.
Then they seemed to drop the ball.
Even years later with the much more expensive D800, the improvements in video were marginal.
Then they gave me real hope with fast accurate focus during Video of the V1, but never improved the camera and even stopped using the decent battery.
So, when the GH3 came out with unlimited Video recording, I jumped ship and put my nikkors on the shelf till the D5300 was introduced.
Then Panasonic came out with the GH4 that I bought for the improvements in Still shooting and it turned out everything else was better so now the Nikkors went back on the shelf.
At this point The D5300 and GH4 were not very good above 1600 ISO and really hurting in the poor/low light I shoot Video in so I got the A7s.
The A7s will shoot in the dark with an external 4k recorder and $2500 Cine lens, but the limited recording, dismal battery life, lousy handling and menus drive me crazy.
So several days ago, I finally got the D750. I wish had sent the A7s back a year ago!
The Nikon feels so good in my hands after a year without one, and the lens are finally being used again.
The FX D750 is more than twice as good as the DX 5300 was in low light and nearly equal to the A7s at ISO 4000-8000 but has much better color.

With the introduction of the D5 and D500, I think 2016 will be different indeed!
And we have not even seen what Panasonic has to offer with the GH5
Nor have any really new CamCorders been announced yet.

Canon, Sony and Panasonic have introduced their new consumer lines. Sony and Panny have 4K units for $1,000. CP+ is in February but I don't expect major pro units to be announced before the NAB.*

* 1D X MKII and A99II might be announced in Japan.

Yes, NAB is the time.
Last year, they had a really huge hall full of Professional Movie Cameras.
It was not only great to get "Hands On", but they had "Stages" with live models to shoot.
Starts April 18th in Los Vegas.

I was trying to decide what specs would make me consider upgrading my GH4's (which are my 3rd and 4th wedding video cameras).
I think 60FPS @ 4K (I will need a slow-mo 4K camera in the future), better performance at ISOs between 800-3200 and correction of the magenta colour tone under tungsten light (at least that's been the biggest thing bugging me about this camera) would be the three selling points for me.

Can't believe how many people fall for the "larger sensor" rumors. AIN'T HAPPENING. They're not throwing away their entire lens arsenal and starting from scratch. Not to mention there's nothing wrong with the MFT sensor - shows use it, movies use it, consumers are using it, and sales are surpassing Canon's.
Any camera with a larger sensor is NOT in the GH line and will be a new line of camera costing 5 figures.

I want the GH5 to do a few simple things...

1. Beat out the G7 in low light performance. Right now I kind of like the G7 over the GH4 to be honest. It's the best ISO perf. they have and the GH5 should beat it. I'd like the trend of the "lower" line of camera's being better to stop, so I don't feel the need to wait for the G8 when the GH5 is announced to get better firmware and ISO.
2. Keep the batteries of the GH4 and not be proprietary - should be a given.
3. In body stabilizing that works with Video mode - the GX8's IBIS only works in photo mode and Olympus got theirs to work in video mode.
4. Preserve or slightly improve on the latitude on the Gh4 - which IMO was fine, so long as they keep it up. IMO the camera should have the added features of the GH4 included - ie VLOG and most of the functionality of the brick of failure - 10bit 422

Disagree! I very much like how they keep on pushing it forward and not holding back with each camera release just because it is artificially is meant to be "lower".

Just like how I like the G6 more than the GH3, and the GH4 is better than the G6 but the G7 is better than the GH4. I hope the GH5 will be a leap ahead over the G7!! And they won't quit... and keep pushing even further ahead with the G8. And so the cycle carries on!!

This is what Panasonic must do to keep their edge over Sony / Canon / Nikon / Samsung / everybody / etc

So, let's look at the A6300 specs - a 6K, 14-stop APS-C sensor that oversamples for 4K, with XAVC S codec at 100 Mbps.

So, what does GH5 have to do in order to be competitive? If it sticks with the SD cards, it'll need HEVC. If it goes CFast, it can get away with AVC-Ultra. On specs, A6300 is da bomb.

what does GH5 have to do in order to be competitive?

10 bit, 4:2:2 internal I-frame recording is the first step. I think any camera released during or after 2016 without that would be a missed opportunity.

A codec/bitrate combination that can record a whitewater/windy tree closeup at 4K, 24 fps without any visible artifacting when pixel-peeping at 400% is the second step.

Beyond those, it's all fluff. (So long as other GH4 performance aspects/features aren't lessened/removed in any way.)
