Panasonic Gh2 and Af-100 in german

It is impressive that GH2 can do that, but I don't think it's enough to switch from AF100 to GH2. You know 5Dmark2 gives sucky still images with its default settings. It takes months, if not years, to master the gear to give freaking awesome images. AF100 gives a whole lot more controls than GH2. It is questionable what settings and what lens on AF100 the test was done. Panasonic might be using GH series as guinea pigs to try out the latest bleeding edge on sensor. But they gotta be conservative on AF series. Who knows? They might add ETC feature on the next AF release. So let's not get too excited about this. But it does make sense to have both AF100 and GH2 if one can afford them.

gotta agree with this

OLPF does not make more aliasing/moire, it makes less. It has nothing to do with chroma or luma on their own, it affects both equally. Almost all sensors I have seen use a birefringent material to duplicate the image in multiple directions. What happens, in essence, is that the image is diffused (blurred). If the OLPF was too strong, you'd just see a mass of gray where detail should be, NOT patterns. This is absolutely counterintuitive. Reducing the OLPF on the AF100 would just make a sharper Moire pattern.

Now, that said, that doesn't mean the sharpening algorithms in the AF100 AFTER the capture aren't creating an issue. This is something that needs to be tested by reducing the detail settings and seeing.

Interesting test though. :)

I guess I am apparently going to have to go out on a limb here and say resolution is not irrelevant to me. Further, the GH2 clearly has less moire and that difference will show up when you have got repeated patterns in urban environments.

Looks good to me...the resolution is icing on the double-your-prime-lens-collection-cake.

AF100 has detail (or sharpness) setting from -7 to 7. If the test was done with the default 0 setting, reducing the detail will mitigate the issue.

Even after seeing this I would trade my GH2 for an AF-100 in a second if you offered the switch to me for free. Hell I'd pay S&H.

Any takers?

:D

Might reduce the moiré but you'd still be left with an even softer image. Gh2 image is much sharper here...whether that's false detail or real detail is another story. The moiré on the GH2 shot is smaller and less noticeable but it certainly is ugly. Jagged. I bet if this was a video clip with a slightly moving camera it'd be "flashing" a lot too.

I'd trade my GH2 for an AF-100 so I can sell it, buy two GH2s, and still have money left over for other stuff.

They state using factory default settings on both, AF100 and GH2. On GH2 they use the 'kit lens' (not mentioned which), on AF100 a '28mm FF equivalent lens', that should be a 14mm prime then, I can't imagine them using some crappy M42 one.

Hmmm... This might explain the AF-100 performance, because many users have found that the factory default settings on the AF-100 had problems, especially with over-sharpening the image.

Ok, but the GH2 chart is even sharper/more detailed and yet has less moire.

Haha. As soon as I get my GH2, I wanna trade with AF-100, too. I'd pay S&H, and I will give a free bag, too!!!

...But the moire might be caused by a combination of oversharpening combined with other settings.

To put this issue to bed we need to have a fully documented professional test done by someone who is very familiar with both cameras. ( i.e. Barry Green or Adam Wilt )

After learning recently that the GH-2's sensor is actually bigger than the AF's I wonder if any of that comes into play? I assume it has more pixels also. With that combination...fitting both those camera's picture into the same type of 1920x1080 16:9 image should result in a slightly sharper image for the GH-2 right? Just a thought.

Hi there,

I really don´t understand, why you guys are frustrated about the result of a test-chart comparision!

If you have the AF100 in your hand - do some real-world shoots......and.....you will realize very quickly, that this Camcorder provides a "REAL" user, nearly everything he could wish for:

a really robust codec / 24MBits in ALL Modes / over 35 MBits in VFR / 1080p24 / 25p / 1080p60 - 1080p60 and....and.....and...............the framerates are absolutly essential 4 professional work!

and to come back to the charts....in my real world tests I discovered, that the aliasing/moiree behavior of this BIG-SENSOR Cam is absolutely wonderful - especially if you were punished with the 5D´s moiree and aliasing!

You can adjust in the AF´s menu nearly EVERYTHING in the settings - including detail ETC -

the video-processing in the GH2 is so far optimised, to give a nice look out of the box - the AF100 is like a very fresh beef-filet, that can be prepared to a paradise meal!

If you own the AF101 - believe me.....it´s an absolutely goooooooood deal - you don´t have to regret ANYTHING about that investigation!

Wish you guys the best - and see you in the hereafter!

I don't know how it would affect aliasing, but adding a slight blur to GH2 footage makes all the jaggies go away... and it looks remarkably like the AF100. Crazy...

Does the asymmetry of the aliasing in the GH2 test indicate line skipping? If not, from where would that arise? Any good online docs re zone plate testing of video imaging systems? Or a good book?
