EVA1: Panasonic AU-EVA1! Announcement and latest updates

Skin looks great, colors look accurate, youtube compression makes some things harder to evaluate. my understanding is that "noise has been improved" since the production of these shorts. hopefully that means ISO 2500 has been tweaked to match ISO 800 better.

When BMD launched the Ursa Mini 4.6k, they actually released the (huge) raw files used to shoot their demo film publicly. Love to see Panasonic do that here...

This right here. Camera companies should always do this with their demos or launches. Being to take the ungraded files into Resolve and push and pull them makes much more a difference to me than watching someone elses take because everybody's taste or aesthetic differs greatly for the most part. Learnt alot from the files that BMD and RED made available. They don't even have to upload large full sequences, just several short frames would do.

Downloading the 4k file and watching it in a player like VLC just changes everything. At least for me on my Mac. I thought it looked awful, suddenly it looks way better.

Mitch, what settings was this film shot at, and what settings are there to adjust in terms of sharpening, NR, color, etc.?

The shot at :13-:15 seconds seem to have an extreme amount of noise; is this something that has since been remedied?

Shots like at 1:30 have me wondering about motion cadence, but I am also wondering if this was shut at a shutter angle over 180 or originally shot in slow motion?

0:56 bottom left is odd noise or compression artifacting - odd.

I agree that ISO 2500 is below expectation, and am hopeful to see how that changes on new firmware. The drone shot at 1:50, which should have decent light to work with, does fair poorly and I honestly would believe if someone told me it was shot on the Mavic Pro (sorry!). On the other hand, there's an irony here that some of these shots likely would have showcased more impressive camera capabilities if the DR was being stretched (would have instead loved to see a beautiful sunrise over the black rocks, with water, and mist, etc. really stretching the DR in natural light situations).

I am very much looking forward to seeing the other films from other directors, and hopeful to see some pre-launch demos of the allegedly improved noise handling since these were filmed.

It's always hard to judge a camera on something like this anyway - this demo film feels a little cheesy and has a more video-ish aesthetic to me, but there are a number of variables in that which make it hard to determine how much of that is due to the EVA-1 and how much is due to the DP/Director, and final stylistic choices. I mean, even the lighting feels overly flat/perfect (there's no real contour to the lighting on the model when she is being lit - just overly bright/flat - which tells me little about the camera, just an observation). But I would not define the image I am seeing here, in my own terms, as being "organic" looking. Still fully ready and expectant to see that though. I do recall seeing a pretty big diversity of footage from the Varicam LT, some which look stunning and cinematic, others which looked very video-ish, so I think it is much too early to make any judgements here, IMO.

I'm surprised so many people here jump into conclusions based on some screenings. Just the fact that camera was shooting at 2500 ISO does not say much about the actual exposure. Really can't say how noisy it is without controlled tests and completely transparent workflow!

That's true and most of us understand that...but when the world is watching, you shouldn't have one spec of noise in your new camera's highly anticipated first footage.

The LT can be very noisy, but you don't show that! haha

Because paralysis-by-analysis is at an all-time high.

Nothing will ever be perfect, but if you can, you should try to eliminate as much doubt as possible for any consideration of failure.

(They could have dropped a shot or two with the heavy noise, or a drone shot, etc...could have been more polished.)

Can someone explain to me why the footage lacks dimensionality in some instances? There are a couple of shots that look like she is in front of a green screen. I've seen this a lot with some of the cheaper cameras.

Hi guys, I can't really provide any real info on this first of three films shot on EVA1. Filippo's movie was produced by our European group and I was not present. I can tell you that it was recorded internally in LongGOP150mbps. It was also the first film shot, the camera literally hand-carried to location.

I can also let you know that we made some distinct conscious choices in the selections of the filmmakers and the types of ions the produced. We gave them great freedom to choose what the wanted to do, but we also wanted the three productions to represent three different types of use for which the EVA1 might be chosen. While all are modest productions with small crews and not a great deal of lighting and grip equipment employed, they are all quite different. Filippo Chiesa's (released today) is a somewhat commercial/fashion type of product, Johnny Derango took the approach of simply inserting the camera into a quirky comedy to see how it faired (I'd call that style the "$1M-$5M Sundance film"), and Elle Schneider decided to really test some extremes with the camera by shooting an ethereal arthouse type film (let's call that one the "under $100K Slamdance movie"). They all are quite different but also represent how people will really be using this camera. Of course a lot of people will also use it to shoot corporate talking head stuff, but these films give a pretty decent idea of the camera's range.

I'll be interested to read your thoughts on the other films and the three together. And I'll try to answer questions as best I can as appropriate, as always.

I completely agree. Didn't want to be too much of a downer because I think the clips look nice (as nice as my $800 G85), but the concept just did not work for me at all. (C200 also had the girl dancing in the studio and the guy out in the snow.)

I don't think it's about being a downer. I don't think you or I have been unfair about it. These demos are there for the people to judge the camera. If they choose a weird concept and then some of the shots don't hold up, they are losing on both ends. They can't expect people not to criticize. Demo is there for that.

The Ursa 4.6K demo is with the top demos so far. Nothing is perfect but at least the footage looked good and the concept wasn't something weird. It also didn't look like video. It looked way better than the F55 demo Dig. That looked like video. The 4.6K demo and the Sony Venice demo are the best demos I can remember. Both didn't look like video and both didn't have weird concepts. They also had just the right amount of production. You don't want something that looks cheap. That is obviously just available light or barely lit. But you also don't want something that is over produced to death. Something that is clearly shot only in a studio or under controlled lighting only.

The Amira demos also looked great. But Arri sees it as a docu camera so the demo was reflecting that. Not my cup of tea. I don't remember if the Alexa had a demo. It was too long ago. Maybe the Alexa65 has one. But I haven't seen it.

I completely agree. The demo should inspire people to buy the camera. So don't go with a weird concept. You risk alienating more people than you please.

The shots should show what your camera can do. But they have to look good or they show what your camera can't do. Stress shots are better left for users. Like Noel who offered to shoot footage that people wanted to see. But the demo shots still have to show what your camera can do and show it well. If it can do anything.
