EVA1: Panasonic AU-EVA1! Announcement and latest updates

The video outputs are only at standard SMPTE frame rates. So 60p is the max.

I'm used to playback instantly (and scroll, and instantly look at gorgeous slowmo) through Foolcontrol on my Raven right after cutting (while steadicam op walks back to point A). Few days ago I had a bad experience: I rented a C200 to try out on a job and discovered I couldn't play 50p (mp4, not RAW) footage at 25 fps! Neither I could play it with a LUT..
How do you say? A bummer.

Mitch, tell me EVA will playback AVC intra in slowmo. With standard LUT on top!

A wifi dongle is required, the Panasonic WM50. There is a door at the top rear of the camera under which is a USB2 port for this. The wifi App, the EVA1 ROP, is scheduled to be available when the camera ships.

Will it compare more to Teradek SERV pro or to the app I have for my GH4?

No problem playing back files at standard speeds. Shoot at whatever frame rates, slow or fast, and play back at the standard project speed. For instance shoot at 240p and then play back at 24. If shot in V-Log you can play back in V-Log or with the 709 LUT applied.

I don't know the Teradek device but it will be generally similar to what we have for the GH5, VariCam LT and other cameras.

mitch, thank you for all your answers, clarifications and generally for your time here and on facebook. it‘s very helpful. be prepared for the next round of nitpicking when the footage is released today :-)

Some really nice shots. Some of the drone footage looks like a GoPro.

This one clip is @2500 at 1:56...pretty destroyed. Wondering if that's up from 800 or in the 2500 setting.

The shot before it is at 2500 iso and looks clean. I'm gonna say the shot you mentioned in a post re-frame.

It could be, but you normally wouldn't do that on a 4K timeline.

It also doesn't look soft(er), just noisy; red chroma in hair, a bit of FPN. (Just curious what happened to that shot.)

Hmmmm. It's ooookay. I guess the days of being completely blown out of the water by a new camera that levels and destroys all the previous models/competitors are over. The returns are negligible now. I'd really like to see the other two demos. This particular video hasn't helped my decision between getting a C200, FS7 II or an EVA1 all that much. I was really hoping to see something extremely filmic and cinematic come out of this camera right out of the gate, but to be honest, this demo looks like regular video to me. Colors are nice and they pop. There are some weird skin tones every now and then, but I think that's from the location lighting (such as when she's sticking her head out of the indoor pool). The shot in the green dress (mentioned above) doesn't look good at all. The grade has a lot to do with my indifference to this piece. It's... well... I guess you could say... normal looking. Which I suppose is the goal for a demo. Just doesn't excite me very much as someone looking for the most cinematic image possible.

I don't necessarily think the flaws inherent in this demo are the fault of the camera mind you, but this is all we have to go off of at this stage, so it's gonna be picked a part a great deal. We all want something different from our cameras and I recognize that what I want in a camera may not be what the next person is looking for. I anxiously await the other two films.

There hasn't been a cinema camera truly worth its price tag in the last half-decade (IMO, the FS7 was really the last exception for what it offered at its time). It's indeed negligible all across the board from everyone and should be a continuing brutal business year-by-year moving forward.

Yeah. A couple of pages back we were talking about how insane that cameras going on 9 years or 10 years like the Alexa and F35 still look fantastic. Because they are very high end they not only hold their own today but still beat the competition in most cases. The same has happened to the cheaper cameras too. The ones coming out are not really beating the recent older ones. Even the FS7 it didn't really beat the FS700 or even the F3. It only had better integrated features. So I agree. It will be a brutal business to get people to dump their cameras to buy new ones from now on.

I think the main problem with these demos is that they always seem to give the cameras to the video people to produce these demos. Why not give it to the movie people? The demo has a weird vibe to it all. I don't think the ballet girl gag worked. Not even talking about the image quality. I was not expecting too much anyway. But the whole thing feels off in general. I think the style just doesn't help things out. So let's see the other 2 demos.

I completely agree. Didn't want to be too much of a downer because I think the clips look nice (as nice as my $800 G85), but the concept just did not work for me at all. (C200 also had the girl dancing in the studio and the guy out in the snow.)

When BMD launched the Ursa Mini 4.6k, they actually released the (huge) raw files used to shoot their demo film publicly. Love to see Panasonic do that here...

That was a great move by them, but they are also competing with RED, who do the same. Everyone also kept asking/annoying them on the forums to do it, ha.

It would be cool for Panasonic to release something (definitely won't be RAW because it's not available yet).

It's the boring ones, the middle ground and the high end classy look. Eva looks to fall as expected into the middle ground along a bunch of other cameras. Features and easy of use looks to be the deciding factor.

Footage looked solid to me.

Honestly, anyone looking to be blown away by anything at this point is going to disappointed. There's only so much better you can get with all the current offerings now. And anything that IS mindblowing will be due to talent behind the camera.

I don't think its reframed, even though at first that made sense. The DOF appears to be shallower versus the wide even though it says it's the same lens. Actually in the 4K I see the same noise pattern with similar coarseness but it is much less prevalent since there is less shadow area in the frame. Does seem like surprisingly coarse noise for such a high res camera, but I'd guess that's just what was leftover after noise reduction since the character of the noise indicates significant noise reduction, possibly just in-camera from trying to fit it into a 150Mbps file at ~25:1 compression?

I think this is somewhat expected given that by most accounts, Varicam LT ISO5000 noise matches 800 better at 2000-2500, so maybe EVA1 ISO2500 is best exposed at ISO1250 if they design and rate ISO in a similar way. Does draw into question the usefulness of ISO2500 if it may trade 1.6 stops of clipped highlights for 0.6 stops of cleaner noise.
