Alexa Mini sounds silly to me. It's cute because it's great and damned expensive, and so small so it should have a chintzy name. But, it's still silly. Panasonic did a good thing calling their little Varicam "LT". It's literally Varicam Lite, and it has a name that sounds like a human nickname. "L.T." And if they wanted a smaller Varicam, they could certainly call it Varicam Mini if they wanted. But that family of camera is well above the pay grade of the GH-class, and will most certainly not be a Varicam-class. I think it might be it's own class like the AF100 was. If it's not an AF200 (and it might not be since AFx00 might have been a 4/3" class of video cine camera which didn't take off as hoped, so they scratched it), then it'll be something else. It is being highly implied that the new camera will have an interesting name. I don't think it'll be like Alexa, Amira, Penelope, Scarlet, or Raven, but it might not be as corporate as AD-DCC100, or whatever. Maybe it'll be called Samantha? I have no idea. The only clue I have about this camera, besides the shape and what little clues you can extract from the NAB and marketing photos, is that there is a GH5 and a Varicam LT and this camera is said to fill the void between them. Extrapolating from what those cameras are known to do, and the shape of the camera, I can only guess "lens-less DVX200 with probably GH5 internal capabilites, and a sensor and mount that play well with 135-format lenses." And Panasonic might be introducing other bits to go with the camera. Lens mounts? A new P2 card that's basically a CFast2 card? A new type of AVC-Intra codec specifically engineered for this new flagship camera? If it does well, a plan for additional brother and sister cameras in this new line? A new implementation of V-Log L engineered for this new line? Or, maybe a C200 will look really good after today? I have no idea. But, I do know, if this camera is amazing, I might have to call mine "Mitch." lol

Alexa Mini sounds silly to me...

Yeah , but it has been like the best selling ARRI camera, like ever. My local dealer sells more Alexa MINIs and FS7s than any other camera.

It's name is logical. Its sexy. It makes sense. Best camera in the world right now. The germans have been doing this for 100 years now, they know what they are doing.

And somehow no one has been able to duplicate their particular image aesthetics. You have your Coca-Cola and your Pepsis and Dr. Peppers, which are all great, but all different.

Exactly. On high-level stuff, where the budget for the camera department is in the single digits % compared to the overall budget, there are pretty much only two choices ARRI or RED. Or Film.

most would go ARRI if presented with the choice. Present company included. I can't quantify it, but the ARRI image is just super pleasant. I do love the Varicam 35 look tho as well - at IBC last year, Pana had a mini Theatre on the side of their booth where they were showing off stuff shot on the Varicam 35 and it looked bonkers. That Varicam sensor is really something.

too bad the Vari doesnt have an ARRI badge on the side :)

ARRI's brand is simply untouchable in our industry. It's a lonely place at the top top I guess.

Im beginning to think this camera doesn't actually exist.
They're still putitng it together - with hammer and nails.

It's a Lawrence Taylor of cameras.

Every time I hear that name I think of Ursula from The Little Mermaid. But then you hear Alexa and think of the cute girl next door.
And I am thinking of Andy D'Urso, a recently retired EPL ref, who is remembered by many for not sending off a player after giving him two yellow cards.

Which, somehow, makes it an appropriate name for BMD.

Yeah, it's like talking about favorite bands. You have that ONE that is always at the top by default.

So, they ask what's the best camera? And you say, well, besides Arri? Well, there's this and this camera...

Those Germans certainly do know what they're doing. Calling it Mini is sexy and silly, but, again, it makes sense because of how expensive and amazing that camera is. I would certainly prefer some flavor of Arri over a Red or Sony. In fact, I place Sony and Red in the same category of very, very, clean, sharp, neutral and sorta flavorless cameras. Canon, Panasonic have always seemed to do something a bit more organic and charismatic about their color, I'm not sure what words to use. It's just...organic. I like it. Yes, you can tweak a Red or a Sony and get the right image, but for me, put Cooke lenses on an Alexa (or a Varicam) just looks right to me. With some filtration. I'm that kinda guy.

These new Varicams have a nice quality to them, image-wise. As a tool they seem to be quite robust on set. Trickle down to a GH5 with it's very nicely implemented video-specific qualities and it also seems like Panasonic is really taking things seriously. Enter this new camera? I don't know what it is, but I'm excited to find out.

5 more hours...

Just a reminder... Panasonic will be at/in Stage 15. Mitch, will the unveiling take place there as well?

Well, for their sake, I would suggest showing accompanying footage. Not just a plastic mold of a camera body.

Very much hoping for the same, as I kind of fell out of my chair when I saw the specs today, but unless the footage delivers, the specs sheet is a bit worthless. Hope to see footage today
