EVA1: Panasonic AU-EVA1! Announcement and latest updates

I'm just having a déjà-vu. I remember FS5 being hyped by Sony as a compact cinema camera and it ended up being a camera that I might shoot my cat's wedding with, at the most.

I've read now all 87 pages of this thread, plus the AF100 threads, plus stuff at DV Info and all the other usual suspects...

While no single camera will satisfy everyone, it seems to me that there is an overwhelming consensus on what people want - a S35 sized sensor w/ interchangeable lens with the same codecs/computing power of the GH5 in the body of something like the AF100 or DVX200. (internal ND and in-camera stabilization would be nice too, but not deal breakers)

If Panasonic can bring this sort camera in at around $4,500 with the above specs, you'd think they'd have a massive hit on their hands. If the sensor is MFT, I still think it could be a big hit (truly a GH5 in an AF100 body so to speak), but probably not a smash. Even though I'm not a MFTs guy, I'd jump today at a GH5 in a true video camera body for less then $5K.

The C200 seems like a baby-step forward, an intentionally crippled camera that's still priced fairly high - something Canon rather famous for at this point. That sort of thinking is something which allowed Panny & Sony to so dominate the low end indie/wedding/corporate market for the past 4 or 5 years - a market that Canon once owned.

Panasonic, which has recently slashed/consolidated their video division, hopefully went for broke on this new camera. The further away from a "GH5 in an AF100 body" this camera is, the more under-whelming it will likely be. Fingers crossed and as always, if the camera's the bomb, tomorrow we'll all be saying....

"Panasonic, take my money!"

Why is there a thread called "Panasonic AF100 successor" in a sub-forum named "Industry News & Information" that is a 87 page long discussion?

At least update the first post with actual information. Or re-name the section of the forum, seriously.

My thoughts, too. Few massive steps forward to mask the more massive backwards steps. "Here's a new Ferrari for 25k... but it only has a reverse gear!"

I did the same, I read a lot of speculations. For me internal ND is a must have, a big deal breaker if not here.

not for me. I hope it won't be "only" a m4/3. The perfect sensor would be a full frame EF sensor. If not, a possible swappable mount S35/M43. Canon just announces their new C200 just 2 days before Panasonic and it sounds for me like a strategic move in order to stop people moving to Pana/Sony. But they didn't have time to finish to develop their internal solid codec.

Canon must think that raw and nice AF will be an efficient answer to reduce the hype on the new Pana.

Wasn't AF100 a flop mostly because of the MFT sensor?

The AF100 was one of the first affordable large sensor cine style cameras that came out at the end of 2010, and pretty much had the market to itself for a while. But things changed 9 months later when Sony released the FS100 with a Super35 sensor and about one more stop of dynamic range. The Canon C100 was announced a year after the Sony was, and it also had a Super35 sensor and had about one stop more dynamic range than the Sony FS100 did.

The question is, will panasonic bomb and introduce another 4/3 chip or mount? Or will they compete to attract new customers by going EF and S355mm. Sony announced today a $1000 mail in rebate for the FS5 that's on top of a free metabones ef adaptor and a 24 months 0%. the $1k can buy an atmos. Seem to be a very sweet deal.

More like someone gave you a ferrari for 25k and all you want to do is drive it 25mph.

"Cinematic Imagery" is the current buzz phrase that manufactuers are all using today. Remember good 'ol "broadcast quality"?

My Canon T3i can shoot "Cinematic Imagery". Just like "Broadcast Quality" back in the day, meaningless marketing jargon.

We could, but this thread was started that way and 88 pages in it seems to be doing the job. It's a speculative thread.

Agreed. But in reality I feel most people need that broadcast quality 4K codec.
