My only experience with a RAW workflow is a few projects on RED and while I enjoy the DSLR stills like freedom of choosing every parameter in post, much of my work involves shooting between 2 and 6 hours of footage day for weeks on end. RAW doesn't matter for me or my clients. So if I look at the C200, discounting RAW, it's not nearly as impressive. I am looking forward to seeing what The Mitch and company have up their sleeve. I am really, really impressed with the Varicam LT. If this new camera translates a lot of the things that are damned impressive about the LT into a small, light, inexpensive package at a good price, the camera will be a winner. The only feature that really leans me toward the C200 is DPAF. Once you have used it to track moving subjects at F2.8 on a long lens, manual focus seems like horse and buggy thinking. NOT for narrative TV and features, of course, humans can do the job better and with more art and subtlety than a computer but for OMB/Event and documentary shooters, DPAF truly is a miraculous invention. It let's me capture sharp shots that I previously would have just missed. How can you not love that?

Curious about how many lenses DPAF works with. Canon STM series only? Canon L lenses?
Any other third party (Sigma and Tamron) lenses with a Canon EF mount?

I've read somewhere that Face detection works only with STM lenses, does anyone can confirm that "L" series lenses (the camera package will sell also with an L lens - the Canon 24-105 f/4 L IS USM ) works?

I have the original C100 - with DPAF paid for upgrade added as soon as it became available. DPAF works fine on ALL my Canon EF (L and non-L) glass and all my Canon EF-S lenses plus my Tokina 14-20mm F2.0.

Note: I've no idea about Face Detection as that's not a feature I have access to.

From the Canon C200 web page...

Continuous AF and Face Detection AF with all Canon EF Lenses*
The EOS C200 has one-touch AF (with a push-button) and continuous AF within approximately 80% of the overall image area. Face Detection AF is another autofocus mode that can track a person's face in the frame and maintain focus on them. To further fine tune AF performance, the EOS C200 offers the ability to set the AF tracking speed (up to 10 steps) and sensitivity (up to 7 steps) to match the user’s preference."

The asterisk refers to it doesn't work with MF lenses, obviously.

Continuous AF and Face Detection AF with all Canon EF Lenses
I believe that Face Detection doesn't work in C300 MKII with all EF lenses, if I remember correctly only STM Lenses ones, probably they made some changes for C200. It ought be very strange because they sell also C200 with an "L" lens, and I think this lens must work with all autofocus mode.

I've been thinking about it, I would probably have to upgrade my 27" 2012 iMac as well to support RAW workflows. So add another $4k to the cost for my business. I agree with Bob two posts up, RAW is not really very desirable for very many users. Most people who shoot it do not NEED it and the people who need it are probably using a Varicam Pure or shooting a RED Weapon Helium. Or have a Codex back on something like a C700. It's weird, I think for a lot of people, shooting RAW is some kind of status symbol. Do we really need internal RAW on a $7,500.00 event/BTS/EPK documentary camera? Probably not, RAW Output would have been just fine. But we definitely need 4K 10 bit 4:2:2 internal recording at 60 FPS. Canon's strategy is oftentimes baffling. Is RAW really going to sell a lower end camera? Maybe it is and I don't know what I am talking about but none of my shooting friends, DPs, or colleagues care about RAW, it's too much everything, card consumption, space, render resource hog. If they would have just skipped the internal RAW and put in the same C300 MKII XF-AVC at 4K 60 fps at 10-bit, they would have created very close to the perfect camera at a killer price. They will still sell a lot of them but the equation is bafflingly incomplete. And with 8-bit internal XF-AVC, even after the February 2018 update, the camera will still be incomplete in a way.

A lot of the 5D ML crowd is excited about RAW (not intending to exclude any others) but the real question is beyond clips that last a few seconds on Vimeo, what else do they use it for...for someone making their living shooting with a camera...say at least 2 days a week, a professional robust codec you can hand off to various clients would be tops....personally hoping for internal Prores...

In this day, what does ProRes really have over other codecs, besides certain clients wanting it, because they can't seem to figure out how to use anything else? I had the ProRes/DNxHD board installed on my F55 right after buying it and I've used it a handful of times. It doesn't offer any quality advantages over XAVC and takes up way more space on the cards and drives.

Panasonic's AVC-Intra/Ultra codecs are broadcast industry standards. I'm not sure what incentive Panasonic has to pay a license fee to Apple to use a codec in a sub-$10k USD camera when their own codecs are just as good, and universally accepted by every NLE on the planet.

But otherwise... yeah, what puredrifting and fboonziaer said.

But, it is going to end on Friday after 6:15pm my time. :D

That's pretty optimistic. Guessing games never end... :)

Keep in mind that much will be revealed Friday, but they haven't said if ALL will be revealed. Panasonic did this sort of "veil" launch with the HVX200 -- teased it under a veil in February, promised to unveil it at NAB in April, and they did. But even then they held back something for later -- they didn't announce that it would do the unthinkable, 1080/24p, at NAB. They kept that quiet until later in the launch cycle.

Will they do the same with the new camera? I don't know. I do know that some of you will be very pleasantly surprised by what you hear, and some of you will probably be disappointed -- just like how the group in general is reacting to the C200.

Not revealing all tomorrow is a double edged dagger - it can backfire , the more you build anticipation, the more Panasonic are exposing themselves to the possibility of not meeting the expectations.

Love em or hate them, Canon's C200 announcement was pretty straight forward affair - full specs, video samples, even info on upcoming firmware. It is what it is.

I am really rooting for Pana tomorrow... but even with 10bit 422 internal, I don't see it really putting the C200 to sleep unless they come up with something truly revolutionary.... As limited as it is, the C200s DPAF is a huge benefit, that is currently unique to Canon, no one else can come even close. For its intended market I am sure the C200 will sell well.

Come on Panasonic, I really hope you don't let me down tomorrow. I have a GH5 and am eager to make it a B CAM to your new camera, pls dont make me get the C200.... I though I left Canon long time ago...

That's where Canon gets me. I have so many EOS lenses and would like to buy the 18-80 T4.4 CNe Servo zoom. The C200s DPAF is a real life saver for my kind of work. The Panasonic, I am sure, will be a great camera, but not having DPAF (I'm guessing but it's a fairly safe guess) would be a handicap for my work (lots of run and gun/BTS/documentary shooting, I rarely get an AC or two). And even if I could deal with not having DPAF, which I could, some of my EOS lenses like the 18-135 STM IS and 10-18 STM IS are focus by wire, not every intuitive feeling for precise manual focus. Which means I would need to sell probably about 2/3 of my EOS lenses and invest is some MF EOS mount lenses like some Sigma ART stuff or Zeiss, something with a decent MF throw and feel. All of my Canon still lenses, save for the 70-200 2.8 IS II, have terrible, super short throw, scratchy MF and or focus by wire. Even my 17-55 2.8 IS, which is a good lens, has a very short focus throw that would not be fun for manual focusing. I want to really dig the new Panasonic, I am sure I will, but I have to be a business person and look at what most of my bread and butter work has been over the past year, year and a half and it is BTS on the sets of TV shows and films and documentary shoots. DPAF is hard to beat in those situations. But we'll see what The Mitch has up his sleeve tomorrow ;-)

My guess is the Panasonic camera will basically be an Odyssey7Q with a lens mount on it, which of course means 4K raw recording. It will look like this.

When the camera fails to sell, Panasonic will reconsider and try to find Mitch to see why he had them buy 50,000 Odyssey7Qs to create these cameras, but Mitch will be far away on a luxury yacht with his Convergent Design pals enjoying the spoils of their ruse.

It wont have raw recording. At least not internally.

Based on what you know about the camera, would you say it's positioned as a B-cam to the more expensive Varicams (like Alexa Mini is to Alexa) or is it positioned as an A-cam of sorts? Also, you mentioned earlier something about Sony announcing a new camera in August, I expect that's the high-end F65 replacement?

Speculating is fine. Planning based on speculation is silly. Don't start positioning the mystery camera as an A or B-cam without knowing the score. It's only 26.5 hours away from us knowing the real specs from the official, credible source.
