The "Low cost media workflow" bullet point in this camera's micro description, suggests that internal ProRes recording is probably a no go and reserved for external capture. Yes? No?

Not really. The Blackmagic Design 4k Video Assist records 4k ProRes422 HQ to SD card media. Its needs very fast cards but it works. The days of not being able to record ProRes to an off the shelf affordable media are pretty much over.

If Panasonic incorporates the ability to record up to ProRes HQ on Class 3 SDHC Card media internally... That definitely checks off a box for me... No question.

If this new camera carries the Varicam badge then I don't care what other things they put into it since it will have the same sensor as the 35/LT. Right??? :D Well, wishful thinking.
I'd say that's a big negatory, considering that there have been 2/3" Varicams, and even now when there's the LT and the big Varicam, there's also a 2/3" Varicam HS. So it isn't the sensor that dictates that it's a Varicam.

Has anyone confirmed that this will carry a Varicam badge though? From what I saw, they only said that it was "between the GH5 and the Varicam LT". The GH5 doesn't have a Varicam badge (obviously) so -- I don't see how we could presume that this new camera would. It might, of course, but I don't know that it would be fair to say that it will, at this point.

422 HQ is 770 Mbps and the fastest SD cards (V90) is 720, although that is a minimum constant speed. Some cards may exceed it.

Or HQ is really SD.

For me the top 5 features that will set this camera apart from the competition and make waves in this market segment are:

Same LT S35 Sensor and EF Mount
Dual ISO
Internal 10 bit 4K 4::2:2 (high bit rates)
Internal 4K Pro Res 4:2:2
Some form of IS

I think we can reasonably assume that the camera will have Dual SDXC Slots, Dual XLR's, ND's SDI, HDMI, Genlock, Timecode Bluetooth etc

I personally don't care about RAW recording, it would be a nice option to have but for my needs these 5 items especially the Dual ISO
are huge selling points.

Having all these features in the one reasonably priced camera IMO would crush sales of the FS5 and BlackMagic Ursa

My assumption was the Varicam HS has the same sensor or at least a smaller cut (without the dual native ISO) from the same sensor as the big Varicam 35 is wrong? Even if the Varicam HS states it has the colour science (VLOOK) and 14 stops of dynamic range even so could this mean it has a totally different sensor as the 35/LT?

Yeah to be fair the GH4/5 has a VLOOK but it doesn't have the Varicam badge, no 14 stops of dynamic range or respond like the Varicam 35/LT sensor.

I know there's 99% chance this new camera won't carry the Varicam badge but since they labelled it as a "Cinematic imagery" camera AND being previewed at the Cine Gear Expo NOT NAB then I hope it would have the Varicam badge and trickle down some tech from the high-end line up. My guess is it would be some kind of GH5 or DVX200 sensor to clearly separate from the Varicam line up and that would be very disappointing.

So what does a Varicam badge mean if it isn't based on the sensor tech? Im talking about the new Varicam line up. Pure, 35, LT and HS.

I've been told by Panasonic in the UK that its not the same sensor as the LT. Also, 4k prores is unlikely as a rep told me they think its an old algorithm with very large file size and and their 4k codec is better. I got the impression that there is a constant battle between what the sales and marketing teams want and what the engineers in Japan will give them. That's probably true of all manufacturers though.

So do you think that they will implement AVC-Intra or the same GH5's codec?

That would be AVC-Ultra for 4k. AVC-Intra was for HD. I'm sure Panasonic is pretty proud of their AVC-Intra and AVC-Ultra codecs and considering how few cameras get to use the AVC-Ultra codec I could see them wanting to use it on a more affordable camera.

Not sure I would consider AVC-Ultra 400mbps as good as 880mbps ProRes HQ but they seem to think it is. I have tested HD AVC-Intra compared to HD ProRes422 HQ and the HQ still had an advantage when it came to log in areas of flat color or very subtle gradients. AVC-Intra still would group or block very similar colors together which can get ugly with log when stretched back out. Haven't been able to try AVC-Ultra but it is supposed to more or less be the same format other than it supports 4k resolution. Any non log format I honestly couldn't tell the difference between AVC-Intra and ProRes HQ. So from a certain perspective Panasonic may be right that their format is better. From a log perspective that may not be 100% true.

The VariCam HS uses a unique sensor design.

So let's guess the camera's name: Panasonic Varicam Mini, Panasonic Varicam Jr., Tiny Varicam, Varicam Miniature, Little Varicam, Baby V.

??????

Or...... GH MAX, GH MAXIMUS, GH POWER MAX......................

Right now Sony is the King for Cinema line cameras as far as features and price range, Blackmagic Ursa is also up there . For Panasonic to appropriately compete with Sony they must introduce a Super 35mm sensor with an EF mount at a competitive price, my gut feeling though says they will NOT. They will introduce another micro four thirds to protect their more expensive Varicam LT and try to sell some more 4/3 lenses. If they introduce a super 35mm sensor it will be with a 4/3 mount. That's why it will be a baby varicam so it doesn't compete with it's bigger brothers. I hope I am wrong but we will find out next month.

This camera is going to be a bridge between the GH5 and the Varicam LT, so it's feature set is going to fall somewhere between these two cameras. I suspect this is going to use beefed up GH5 tech with a new S35 sensor, but don't expect the Varicam LT sensor or it's dual ISO gain paths. ( it's not a Varicam LT replacement )

Is the new camera being first shown on Friday, or Saturday?

When I was counting out to 25 days, that was intended to land on Friday, June 2, the first day of Cine Gear Expo. Hope I didn't do the math wrong!

Panasonic will preview the new camera at CineGear Expo. The unveiling (hey, it was literally under a veil before) will be on Friday, June 2. Details to follow.

I think there are a lot of folks that hope you are right.
