Back in my college days I ran a indie supermarket. We rented a garage behind the store to store beer and soda.

So basically what I did was purchase those items in bulk when the distributor put them on sale. So after the sale I kept by beer and soda prices way lower than the big chain markets. We where faster and easier to get to. So basically we started selling more beer and soda than the big chains down the street and our profits increased even after I lowered our profit margin. We sold more in volume. lol yes I know there are more beer and soda buyers than they're are cinema camera buyers.

I guess I just got curious on the markup and such.

Thanks.

It's a wee bit more complicated than that, but I get your point. Remember that beer and soda are commodity items and consumables, so they are looked at quite differently than a camera purchase. Also recognize another aspect of your example: A GH5 can have a much lower profit margin because it is a volume product, while higher end cameras will always sell fewer units so the development costs must be amortized across fewer units. I think we shipped more GH5 units in the first couple of weeks than we'll likely sell VariCam LTs in a year, and that's with selling a whole bunch of the VLTs. Just different markets. Also know that most VariCam sales are to higher end clients who expect some handholding during the decision process by Panasonic, our resellers, or both. Whereas your average GH5 buyer may just as likely purchase it online. So there's a lot more overhead associated with a higher end product as well. On the flip side of this is the fact that a camera such as the GH5 is more likely to be obsoleted by a new model or competition in a year or two compared to a VariCam with far greater staying power. That doesn't just effect the consumer; it means that Panasonic has to be developing new products faster on the low end compared to the schedule on the high end. And these economies apply to all manufacturers -- just look at the lifespan of the Sony F5/F55 compared to that of the A7S.

Just got some info that tells me this camera is very similar to the FS5 in design with things like detachable LCD screen and moveable either to the rear of the camera or in the front. To bad there's no good EVF.

Just had a two days shoot with a C100 and it sucks to do without an EVF on sunny days as the one on the C100 is useless.

Osslund, any rumors about zoom rocker button?

I think that zoom rocker together with autofocus is essential, I hope this camera will be better than FS5.

sure, a zoom rocker would be nice in theory, but with which lenses should it work ? it makes sense on the sonys, because they got their own e-mount PZ lenses. but other than that, the only ef-mount power-zoom lenses i know all have their own integrated zoom rockers. i'd rather take a DC-out to power those lenses, but then they'd probably need to use bigger (v-mount) batteries, and that wouldn't fit into the footprint of the camera (and they could not make a profit from proprietary batteries, which could make the camera more expensive).

or did you mean controlling the focus with the rocker?

No, just to operate zoom with the lens. I'm worried that this important function will be missing, I don't really like to wait till Cinegear to have a camera without zoom operation and no autofocus.

Audio speakers, especially high end, are based on unique tastes and preferences and carry some big ass margins. As does furniture. White goods are thin (but there are ways to make them fatter). Cars have a 10-12% margin after all is said and done (more with financing, obviously).

You know who has the largest margins? Professional athletes.

but again, what lens would you use it with?

autofocus makes more sense, as it looks like it's going to be pretty light camera, so it will probably be mounted on gimbals or drones. not ideal, and it would only work on one kind of - non panasonic - lenses, e.g. canon ef compatible lenses, anyway, but better than nothing. on the other hand, it's probably not on their top-priority list - i don't know how complicated it is to do good autofocus, or if it's just some cheap hard/software that they "just" have to put in there - but if it takes away resources from other, more important areas, i'd rather like them to not care about autofocus.

I don't know, I hope that Panasonic will make some good solution. It would be good if they will implement a MFT lens mount with S35 sensor, and find a way to operate zoom with their lenses. I'm not expert, but maybe it's possible.

Back in the AF100-days, I always hoped that they'd do a decent power zoom lens on MFT. But it looks like they are putting an EF mount on the new camera. Even if it had an interchangeable mount: With relatively cheap EF-power zoom lenses from other manufactures (e.g. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/prod...1714c002_cn_e_18_80mm_t4_4_compact_servo.html ) on one side and with an MFT PZ lens for video probably being too expensive for the compact-MFT-crowd on the other side, I can't imagine that happening now. plus, there's always the dvx200 for those (ENG- & Event-shooters) who need power zoom and autofocus.

About FS5 I've a question for you : how many Sony zoom lenses works on FS5? I'm sure that also the models for FS7/FS7MII works on FS5, but I think they're quite heavy.

yes, they are, but that's probably in their nature, if you want them to be parfocal, have a smooth zoom-motor, af-motor, iris-motor, useable zoom-range and have a constant aperture, if possible.
i guess, the smaller ones for their mirrorless cameras also work, but they'd be less than ideal for video work where you need that power zoom.

dr. google showed me that: http://briansmith.com/aps-e-mount-lenses-for-sony-mirrorless-cameras/
plus, there's also that (also quite big & expensive) fujinon e-mount power zoom. ( http://www.xdcam-user.com/2017/02/fujinon-mk18-55mm-t2-9-e-mount-zoom-lens/ )

All Sony E-Mount lenses (zoom or otherwise) work on the FS5. There are no special FS7 lenses... and they are all probably the lightest power zoom lenses for S35 you can get.

I think that FS7 is a great camera to consider but what stops me from carrying on it's the weight of 9.9lb.
