AC130: Panasonic ag ac130

Now it all makes sense! That one little truck, mostly empty! Oldtimers, remember waiting around for HVX's? And wondering with each announced "shipment" whether our cameras would arrive, months after the "release date"? These shipments only have about 20 cameras each!

Oh, I miss the days! Cursing ourselves for having preordered when we heard that someone had just wandered into a store that happened to get a shipment and bought one. I finally got my camera in mid-March, after three months of reports of the sporadic shipments. IIRC, there was even one shipment lost when a boat sunk... sank?

You guys should keep an eye on the HPX250 vs HPX300 thread on the HPX300 forum.

There has been several links to videos put up recently, one a very boring Panasonic video that does show off the long zoom, the other an excellent little production!

Cheers, Vaughan

Just noticed that BH updated their status for these 3 cams. Ac130/HPX250 are now available for preorder, with the 130 due in November..

Also, the prices appear to have been significantly reduced. 160 went from $5500 to $4700 and the HPX went down to $5900 from around $6500.

The 130 is also listed at $200 less than it was before.

The apparent lack of flash band compensation in the 130 and 160 is a bit disappointing. The 160 looked very promising before I read the latest brochure. I'm not keen on P2, but maybe I'll just need to save for longer. Is there an easy way of doing flash band compensation in post? Perhaps a plug-in?

Do we know that it's not going to be included? I know that it's not in the brochures like it's in the HPX250's, but has there been any confirmation that it's not, in fact, going to be there? I would think the wedding/event folks who are probably going to be buying the 130/160 in higher numbers than the 250 would be the folks most who could most use that feature.

Flash band compensation will not be on the 130 or 160....very stupid move since these cams are geared at event videographers, where flashes are the most likely to happen.

I asked the same question when the HMC40 and HMC80 came out. They didn't have flash-band compensation either, even though I figure they were fairly directly aimed at event shooters/etc.

Apparently flash band compensation in-camera is an expensive thing to do. The HPX250 is primarily the same hardware inside as the HPX370 is, and the HPX370 has it, so the HPX250 has it too. But the AC160 and AC130 aren't the same innards, so apparently they don't have it. And they're less expensive, so there's less room in the budget to put the feature in.

hey barry any chance you get to review these new cams?
Lots of chance, but little to no time. If I told you what my schedule was like -- well, I've told a few people and they just gasp. :)

So -- when they're released I can have a lot to say, but not right now.

Okay, that makes sense... a shame, but it makes sense.

The HMC150 will likely go away due to Market demand. There is only a $400 difference and most would spend the extra buck to offer a little fail safe on current technology. That said it may still be out in the market for a couple of months and bargains may be had.

And the Professional UHS-1 Card with a 1 Year Professional Warranty is here: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/805157-REG/Panasonic_RPSDB32GB1K_32GB_Class_10_UHS_I.htm This is the one I would buy as it also has recovery software, a card checker software and a one year warranty.

Best,

Jan

Jan,

In very general terms, what can we expect as far as image quality from the AC130/160 vs the HMC150? I'm not looking for any specific details -- just general observations.

Thanks

Hi,

Longer lens, better low light, better resolution, function knob for fine tuning Auto Focus, Iris or Y Get functionality, dual card record. Just off the top of my head.

Best,

Jan

They have recovery software as well.

The Panasonic price needs to be lowered Jan

Well these are not the Panasonic and their recovery software is for bringing back deleted photos, not files that failed to close for loss of power or being pulled out before the file was finished closing. Big difference. Also I didn't see their link to the card checker verifier software that is available for the Panasonic. And to say that the price should be lower is such an easy thing to say when you are not the one manufacturing, importing or marketing the product.

Best regards,

Jan

I understand this, but we did an interesting poll. We asked some of the "top" wedding and event shooters and held a focus group with them. They all shot with CMOS cameras and EX1-EX3s. All of their gear had been purchased within the last 3 years, so they could have bought a camera with the feature. Not a single person knew what Flash Band Compensation was. And not a single one did anything to resolve the Flash Bands in the final videos they delivered. It was a rather stunning revelation. That we had a feature that addressed an issue they had and they didn't even know about it, nor did they find the problem to be that big of an issue.

That said, the HPX250 has 20 bit DSP and the !^)/130 have 18 bit, and it is running on a different LSI, so it is not possible. I fought for it as I thought it would be a very valuable feature, and in the end the focus group basically deflated my entire argument.

Hope that helps,

Jan

Hi Jan. Thanks for your interesting insight into FBC. I am an event videographer currently shooting with the HMC-150. I may consider upgrading to the 130 for its better low light and the dual cards. My only experience with CMOS is recreational shooting with a Flip, where I experienced the Jello effect. I definitely wouldn't want to deal with that in my event work. Is there something in the 130 to eliminate this CMOS issue?

You will not have the jello effect unless you totally shoot something you wouldn't be paid for, like rapidly swishing the camera back and forth 10-15 times. The clock speed on the AC130 is much fast than what you will find on any of the DSLRs or Flip phone. Jello is not a concern. If you were using it in a highly vibrational scenario like a helicopter, put it on a stabilized mount and it will be beautiful.

Best,

Jan
