Panasonic AF101 Footage

I have agree with you Joe, the posts that follow that engadget link are unbelievably shallow. I don't think they are even the target market for this camera and not sure that I have the time to influence them. One post from me over there would take the rest of my day as the folks over there are the flamers in the world.

Thanks,

Jan

Small request - Still don't understand why we cannot download the vids even after asking graciously. I mean the vids on Vimeo - I respect that Pana have asked you not to make the AVCHD files available. For evaluation purposes that's our best bet isn't it - and that's kind of the point right - to see how sharp the image is at full quality? I know some may pixel peep and we respect that it isn't finished but I have seen GH13 stuff on Vimeo wich looks as good as this - until I have downloaded the original and been able to truly evaluate it's quality. I am sure I am not alone in wishing to see the original files on Vimeo please. Please? By the way - the image looks amazing as it is though...............

Because the camera is not finished yet. If you were to make your evaluation on this footage and because of it decided that it wasn't the camera for you, then did the download serve the purpose? I think not. If I had had my way this footage wouldn't be up there either as it does have issues, but it is up there and people are getting the impression of the stuff that it can do, but there a good number of posts all over the internet that are criticizing the camera and pointing at this or that flaw. The camera is not finished yet.

Thanks,

jan

Jan - I just meant the Vimeo download. Anyway - that's fine - it's reason enough - just didn't get any response from them that's all. 'Panasonic have asked us not to allow people to download from Vimeo' ........that would have been enough said.

For what it is worth - for every pessimist out there who sees the cup as half empty there are people like me who may just get swayed and see it as half full if we get to see good quality vids. Early impressions look like this is an amazing camera and obviously soon we shall view a proper shoot with it. I trust Panasonic will put this cam in the hands of a really experienced DOP to shoot a short scripted real world trial. I am tired of watching ducks and geese...............

I would say that the response from the posted footage is overwhelmingly positive from what I've seen, and I see quite a bit. From My observation, it seems there is always a certain kind of poster profile that likes to nit pick and criticize to prove how much they know and suggest that their standards are just so high that the product doesn't meet them. After all, they are just so professional, and they see things in the footage that others don't, and if you don't see those things as well, then obviously you're just a rank amatuer. Then when the camera is released, they're the first ones in line to buy it. Just gotta love those internets. :-)

Thanks, Jan for all you do to keep us informed and please release some more footage soon. It's going to be a long Oct, Nov & Dec if you don't. Bloom says he gets a AF100 next week so hopefully more info and footy is coming soon.

Of course, if you release a SINGLE footage sample from an anticipated, pre-release camera, people are going to poke at it, scrutinise it, and come to rapid conclusions based on a single piece of footage from an unfinished camera.

I used to write technical reviews of HDTV displays for a fairly well known UK site, and know that small issues can completely snowball out of proportion on forums - less so when professional camera users are involved, but still.

Hi David,

Based on my experience in this product management job, it is more so with cameras, as the signal starts there. I have seen too many times where initial footage killed the first 6 months of sales. Won't do it again.

Thanks,

jan

After watching this again, I have to say I'm pretty sold on this camera. Very impressive.

Can't wait to see it with the Noktor 50mm f0.95 lens in action!

What nobody mentioned before (I think) is the little bit yellowish skin tone of the model, around 1m10s when she's sitting down in the chair. Anybody else seeing this and if yes, is there an explanation for this? I see this same yellowish skin tone in my GH1 footage from time to time, is it mud?

All the skin tones look about the same to me (not too great). I see greenish/yellow.

How do you think is it possible to shoot on AF 100 real full-length movie for cinema?
You most definitely can. My brother and I shot a full-length feature on a stock DVX100 (no adapter) in standard definition and it was shown in many festivals in the US, and was picked up by HBO for DVD and broadcast. I would imagine the AF100 would look spectacular on a big screen.

Excited for this cam... But can I buy one for less WITHOUT the amateur on-board audio recording for less? Like a stripped down film version.

Is this an ENG camera? Who uses on-board audio for film making?

HI All,

There are a few issues with giving a prototype camera to a complete stranger and post it all over the internet. It does take a company that has huge confidence in their product and faith in whom they are giving it to.

We don't do this for a living, we in fact are not reviewers. It doesnt mean I have never evaluated pre-production models or tested alpha cameras. Always as buyers and i think think there in-lies the difference. I appreciate the camera is not ready but what would be the point in showing it to clients. Is it ever ready? RED clearly illustrates that its never ready.

Our view was simple, lets see it. Had we had more than 5 hours with the camera I think the results would have been much better but for our purposes in our group, it was enough. As far as uploading the files, I think we were led to believe this was a much more finished product than originally told. That is ok, codecs are a different business. We just had a sneak peak and I think that Zacuto and Bloom and the many others will be able to dissect it further for all the reasons these questions thread about.

Auto white balance was not used all the way through, again an issue with working quickly. We did not grade modify or alter anything. I know when I evaluate cameras, graded versions is the last thing I want to see. There is some funny stuff going on in skin tones, its not in the original footage, it seems to be in the QT conversion (joe played with it for ages) some stuff appeared on the lcd but not on the tube screen.. basically those nuances, I believe are workflow related and we could really spend a few more days dissecting it.

I hope that everyone who's complaining about skin tones reads what Yves just said -- those skin tone shifts were NOT in the original footage, they were introduced in post.

If things like skintone recreation are critical for your shooting, I think it may be best to wait for raw footage from a finished version of the camera shot on lenses you know the color features of.

I'll correct Yves slightly, it wasnt actually a conversation to QT that causes those shifts. Its all about what monitor your viewing on.

I have dell 24" Ultra Sharps in my suite, along with a Panasonic HDSDI CRT Grading monitor & a Sony 32" Luma Consumer LCD.

Those colour shifts are ONLY there on the 24" Computer LCD monitors. The HD CRT looks amazing and is 100% accurate. The sony 32" TV is slightly off, but 90% better than then computer LCDs.

Theres a reason the pros are all still using CRTs.. I own 3 myself, #notcallingmyselfaprohowever.
