Open request to CD for FS700 + Odyssey 7Q

As a long time user of the FS700 and the Odyssey, I still find myself wanting more from the setup in terms of looks straight out of the box. Clients i have don't always like the hassle of slog2, grading, LUT's to correct the wonderful 4K2HD image it can produce.
I have mentioned this to Mitch before, he said it was was probably technically possible to do, but not part of their plans.
I'm after a setting that will give you better DR than the standard rec709 PP, but still saturated unlike the rec709 800%, low ISO to keep noise down. No grading/ LUT's necessary. Just like the old days!

I wanted to see if anyone else agreed? Maybe we can make them reconsider. I understand the FS700 is aging, but it could possibly also transfer over the the FS7/FS5.
That said the fs700 IMHO still stacks up favourably from what I have seen in terms of image quality. CD have been more than generous with the FS700 (after a very slow start), can't it continue please Mitch?

I believe the burnt in LUT was on the horizon but I've given up asking. I was looking for a new option going forward.
 
Sounds good to me. I haven't yet purchased the 7Q+ but it is on my future plans. Besides 4K, the other reason I want it is for 4K2HD for improved HD. I wasn't aware of the "hassle of slog2, grading, LUT's to correct the wonderful 4K2HD image it can produce." I thought it could record to 1080 ProRes and be done if so desired; shows how much I know ;)
Always having to use slog2, LUTs and grading adds more work to the mix than many jobs justify.

You don't have to record in SLog2. You can record straight to REC709 ProRes if you'd like. It looks like 35mill wants REC709, but with more DR. To do this, they'll have to create the burned-in LUT feature.

Honestly, I'd expect CD to deliver burned-in LUTs before they do a new "PP" - Too many people have their own aesthetics of what makes a good image. It would make more sense for them to let us create a LUT that looks how we'd like it than spend their time trying to create new PPs that meet everyone's needs.

I don't know when they plan on doing the burned-in LUTs (or if) but I think continuing to ask for them will keep it on their radar.
 
I understand the 'good image' issue is subjective, but the burnt in LUT is taking forever. I have been asking.
I was just trying to offer another way forward. Originally it wasn't uncluded with the LUT update as they were concerned people would burn in their images out of error. Can't we be trusted now Mitch? Please?
 
And I agree that I wish they'd include that feature sooner rather than later, but I think they've been busy getting the Quad-Recording features out. Plus, if the Apollo advertising is accurate, it looks like DNx is coming early this year as well. Maybe burned-in LUTs are coming soon as well - who knows - but I have a feeling they have a long list of features that they've already announced that they're trying to fulfill first.

Since almost everybody recommends overexposing by one to two stops for the cleanest results, and it seems like a fairly complicated thing creating -1/-2 versions of LUTs, even if you got the ability to bake in the LUT, you'd be limited to the way you exposed. Or to what LUTs you could use, no?
 
Part of the reason for needing the over exposure is due to the slog2 rating of 2000ISO, which is noisy as all get up. A low ISO high DR, well colour saturated image is what I'd like so see- straight from the box.
 
Mitch, yes it has been a very long road:) The FS700 is still a viable camera. The FS7 and FS5, as we know have their issues. I have no desire to upgrade in the present state.
A few great DP's and bloggers alike are stating to talk about returning to basics. A picture straight from the rushes. Such a novel concept! You as an old school DP should appreciate this, I know you would.
CD has the ability to facilitate, and even make the camera's outlast what Sony's cycle dictates. Please make it so. The RAW to HD will fix the FS5 issues, no doubt. I know the early adopters have probably already got our monies worth from the FS700. But don't make us chuck it away just yet.

It's a fundamental problem with the design of Slog gammas. While high DR recording capability is desireable, it is a fact that high DR works well for high DR scenes, but, not as well for low DR scenes. With well lit, low DR scenes, the bit bucket wastes a lot of space at the low end of the gamma curve that never gets filled with data. I'm afraid an slog+ LUT solution, whether burned in, or not, will not fix this problem of unused and wasted bits when recording low to moderate DR scenes. What really needs to be incorporated is yet another recording mode that allows RAW debayering to hypergammas or standard gammas in whatever codec, be it Prores, DNxHD 0r dng. Everyone tends to think Slog is a solution for all recording ranges, however, it ain't so good for low DR scenes.
 
Yes, that is what I have asked for in the past. A hypergamma would be dream come true.
Now, Im just looking for something (anything!) that has better DR than rec709- without the correction hassles. Doesn't have to be 14 stops, just more than 5-6 would make life so much easier.
 
DNxHD is coming along and we hope to have it soon, but it is not in the next update. Good stuff is there for both Odyssey and Apollo users.
