M4/3...will work fine with GH1 right? Worth getting? Seems nice...sure $300-400 isn't a great price for a 17mm f/2.8 but 17mm is very nice and wide and the convenience of m4/3 with no adapter (not sure if it will auto focus but I assume you get aperture control, etc) is not to be overlooked...

Thing is on backorder @ most reputable places but what do people think...worth getting?

I've got one from my Olympus E-P1. Really nice lens, for sure. I'll test it out on my GH1 (when it gets here Friday, I think), and report back.

I also have an Olympus 4/3ds to Micro-4/3ds adapter that I'm going to try with my Olympus Zuiko 50mm macro lens. Now that is an awesome lens. I'm really psyched to see how it looks on the GH1.

Will be inconvenient pulling focus with it I think due to the size and lack of distance markings.

How often are you pulling focus on 17mm lens @ f2.8...seems to me ideally it'd be for lower-light wide shots with deep DOF...not pulling shallow focus.

In any case follow focus might also not work cause gears might not fit..even zipgears will probably smack their excess length, assuming it hasn't been cutoff (no jokes plz..crap now I just asked for it) on the faux mirror flash housing.

Even at 17mm, 2.8 is quite shallow, at 5 feet distance you get 8.5 inches, somebody taking one step back falls out of focus. If you want deep DOF at 17mm can't you just use the kit lens?

Yeah that's true I suppose....but I was thinking more on the lines of low-light performance...also if it's soft enough you might be able to get away with a less percise focus pull...in any case I don't think I'd mind pulling focus with this thing...come on it's just so cool!

Well, I'm not sure if AF works in video, but it is VERY noisy. I tried it out and it was whirr-ing and clicking. Oh and the aperture changes are also quite noisy.

Doesn't look like...but it should work fine on GH1...it's m4/3...control aperture from the camera :)

Looking at M4/3 not 4/3.....I don't want to buy another adapter. But if I did...does the m4/3 to 4/3 adapter carry electronic signal?

Panasonic's version costs $149 on Amazon, I think. Olympus's version costs $179. These two have the pins for transmitting the signals between the lens and the camera.

I used today the 17mm on the GH1. It works fine and also the (strong) lens distortions get corrected in the GH1 video. But overall I think a fixed 17mm is not that flexible. I better use the Olympus 4/3 14-54mm or 12-60mm (quite expensive though). You have to use both in MF (the 12-60mm does not work otherwise and the 14-54 is way to noisy to use during recording.

... the 14-54 is way to noisy to use during recording.

do you have the 14-54? any chance you can you post some footage from the GH1 with this lens?

Problem is F2.8 is not fast enough for video. Better hold on for that 20/1.7 in September.

?!?! what f stop do you shoot at ?
I find apertures larger that f2 have dof that is very difficult to control unless I immobilize my actor

Well you can always go higher F-numbers but not lower than the lens actual F so better go for the 1.2-2.0 region for most lenses. Then it's up to you if you wanna have high light input or deep dof.

Can we see some pics/screen grabs from 17mm on GH1?

Also do we know for sure that that 20mm is f/1.7 and that it's out in december? Is this the lumix one from the GF1 pics? Also any news on pricing?
