I was hoping your Little League team would win today...but...Day 7, still no medals. Man we are stinking out the joint.
Maybe we can buy one from "Medal" Phelps.
LOL!
I hope Nadal can take it all.
Is it possible that the others guys fingers touched the pad first but not with enough force to trip the sensor? I watched it in HD slow motion on by PVR and I can't tell without a doubt who touched first. It was soooo close.David,
There are timing pads that are activated by an impact. Those are the white things with the black cross in the middle of them you see at each wall. Basic units are accurate to 100th of a second, those are probably near 1/1000th of a second.
His finish went against every single idea that stood in regards to finishing in swimming. Basically that never works out that way. The half stroke normally is always longer than the glide. But apparently not for Phelps. I swam for a great many years. And if something like that ever came up, it would be disputed - and it was. But the high speeds above the swimmers allowed the final call to be made. Essentially, it was amazing. In all my years of swimming, I have never seen ANYTHING like that before. Ever.
Cool. It just looked like the other guy was gliding so slowly at the end that it might have been possible. Phelp's deserves it though, outstanding effort! Not likely. It is possible if you were floating in the water and poked it. The pads we used wouldn't register if you just gently touched it. The olympic ones I can't comment on their sensitivity. But when you extend your body at that speed you hit that pad with massive force. I've heard (and seen) people break hands and fingers slamming the pad. With the 1/2 body length glide, he wouldn't have lost that much speed. You move faster underwater than above. Just that phelps and his arm extension, coupled with the half stroke slammed him in just before the tag. Which is extremely difficult to do. Just with a really powerful and fast recovery on the arms, you can feasibly do it. I mean, the other guy would have had it. But he came in too far away from the wall. His glide was very long. And Phelps ended up with a half stroke that pulled him in. It was the glide that killed the other guy. If he had come in perfectly, with a quick glide (like less than a second) and an extension it would have been over for Phelps. But he was too far away from the wall. And phelps was too close.
Whether one agrees w/the age rule or not is a moot point. The rule exists and as such all the teams must follow it. I hope the IOC changes direction and performs a proper investigation so the rumors and allegations don't continue to overshadow competition. The birth date of Yang Yilin was listed on official national registration lists posted by the General Administration of Sport of China website from 2004-2006 as a too-young Aug. 26, 1993, according to the AP.
On her passport her birth date is Aug. 26, 1992.
Jiang Yuyuan’s birthday was Oct. 1, 1993 as recently as a registration list for a 2007 competition. According to her passport she was born Nov. 1, 1991.
