Seriously... the next fest?

ninjas. Stright up ninjas. Ninjas with Crossbows. And Flamethorwers. ........ Crossbows that shoot Flaming arrows.....

NinjaswithFmaingarrowcrossbowsFEST.

Drama makes the most sense to balance out the male-bent/action/FX/heavy fests that we've had thus far. But, what about opening up the genre, and picking more of a theme? Just a suggestion...

zombies and heroes were theme fests....I think Jarred and some people (myself included) want a genre (like drama) in order to push the story-driven projects forward

But if a project is not good, it will still garner interest because it is going to be viewed to be voted on for a contest.

Yep- which is why it is preferable to complete a project within a contest- you get a whole lot more exposure that way.

I actually think it would be fun to have a line or two we need to use in the course of the short and open the flood gates to any genre. It lets creativity run wild. That's just me though.

unless you go for the 'XYZ film festival' or 'ABC short films festival' you will always have to submit to a genre or theme festival/competition...if you want to be totally creative with your work you go for the above, if you follow the rest, you can be very creative but since you follow a guideline (genre, theme, quote used inside the film) you are limited creatively IMHO

this is not necessarily a bad thing, but its not the most creative way you can go
creativity means you use whatever is inside your head without focusing on something specific, but if the line is '...after that, I promised myself that I would never drink milk again' then you are not totally creative since you MUST do something about milk and maybe you wouldnt if you were not given this piece of dialogue

Well, narrowing the theme down would be bad in my opinion, you're just inviting more repetitive storylines.
Absolutely!

Someone will manage to put a zombie or a knife in a drama short, or any one garunteed.
That's fine, as long as it is a Drama... like a zombie visiting a shrink because he's suffering from a loss of touch with his prior existence! :)

Thats what FilmFights.com is for

It was only an idea. I mean I can write several genres well enough. And I have friends that can take things I can't write. I just figured to throw the idea out there. I understand fully that you will have to submit to a genre, I am not a stranger to film.

However I will agree with you on the standpoint that you can't be 100% creative. That doesn't exist in the industry, however, even with your lead line "...after that, I promised myself that I would never drink milk again" anything is really possible, granted milk will be involved in the beginning and end of the film, but the middle is open. And it can cross lines between genres. Like I said, it was only an idea and I do understand the concept of creativity, thanks for the explanation though.

noir is a damn hard thing to do :(, it requires sets, costumes, lighting work, amazing score and lots of booze/smokes hahahahaha

Hey John, what's the matter? You have everything there that you just listed.... well, except the lights! But you're working on that! :)
