OFFICIAL A1 Custom Presets thread

I'm always more convinced that this camera can't avoid magenta unless you cast green everywhere.

I have to try Panavision, but with my latest noise, sharp and gamma settings.

i found the more i raised the gamma settings, from cine 2 to cine 1 and norm, the more pale everything became, and the more magenta.

FANAFILM
:) a mix between Panavision and 35mmfilm

Papa's PANAVISION is the only preset out there that i find can reproduce the real skin color without adding color casting on the image.
35MMFILM is my favorite preset for contrast and sharpness.
I tried to mix those presets, and here is the result:

(as you can see the only white thing in the picture is her shirt, and it's perfect white. The skin color from Panavision is perfect as the white balance.
Even the jeans have a good color despite the warmer white balance of the last picture.

You guys never seem to stop amazing me. Thanks for all the work you two :).

I guess I can't get away with a normal gamma due to the flat looking skin tones based on what you've said on the way gamma affects them. Nice research!

I put Panavision up against vision01 during a wedding (when I was shooting preps) and kept going back to vision01. (You guys are probably tired of me talking about it..lol).

I'll be trying PanaFilm tonight. I may tweak the ped, blacks and setup to vision01's settings as I don't seem to prefer for the way shadow areas look with it.

I shot a wedding last weekend and when I tried the Panavision preset it was very blue, is that normal? I assume it was because of the low light setting.

I'm excited. Just uploaded Panafilm and although I liked the look and sharpness, I didn't like the way the shadows looked.

I went back to my favorite preset (surprise, surprise...lol) and mixed Vision01 with PANAFILM. This is what I came up with :

GAM CINE1
CMX N
HDF L
Black S
Knee L
NR1 off
NR2 off
CGN 25
RGN 48
GGN 49
BGN 50
SHP 9
SET -9
COR 9

everything else zero.

I call it PFVISION (panafilm vision).

It's brighter than vision01, has the same great skin tones, has subtle contrast and is sharp. I don't prefer the way the shadows and blacks look with it pressed and ped at -9. I'll be taking it for a test spin @ tomorrow's wedding. If all goes well, I can dump vision01 and use PFVISION for ceremony AND reception :)...damn those dark reception halls.

Tell me what you guys think! Many thanks again to Gio, PaPa, and Dsjecta for all the elements needed to make up this preset!

sounds like that may be your best bet for those low lit reception halls, but i wouldn't use those settings on anything with controlled lighting.

Having your color gains on each rgb will increase the noise ever so slightly. especialy with those sharpness settings. And then the coring will soften the image again, so its slightly counter intuitive.

Any good compromise you would recommend in terms of settings? Maybe reduce the color gains by the same amount (like all of them minus 20 or divide the number in half)? Or perhaps turn down the COR to 0 and put the sharpness at 2 or 3?

Also, does having the blacks pressed and ped at -9 counter the noise? I assume that's what makes the PanaFilm preset get away with the other settings if so..?

I think that the A1 works good with extreme settings.
The Panafilm has noise...but all presets have noise and panafilm's noise is more like the factory noise, it's dense, small blocks, and i like it more than having larger blocks only on dark areas.
In Panafilm i had to push the gains to maximum in order to get that extra gamma.
I have to try it in low light situations, but for sure the shadow detail is lost, letting only highly contrasted highlights.
As you can see in the next picture, the room has white walls, but i only lighted the face with a desktop lamp. The background results black.
Personally i like this light curve.

Just got back from shooting a full wedding with PFVISION. I must say, I was VERY impressed with the way it handled everything. It was great in the reception hall and during the ceremony outdoors, it performed beautifully.

Also a great serendipity is that it matched almost perfectly to my partner's FX1s. For those who want to try to mix and match Sony's with your XH-A1, I would suggest to try PFVISION :).

Please try out the preset and let me know what you guys think.

...all i did was up the contrast/darken the blacks a tad while editing because .wmv files always look so light after encoding....

otherwise, looks great! the baby doll was the closest thing to a person that was home for a skin tone test, and i'm certainly not going to subject my CCDs to my face :-)
