Odyssey7Q

Option 2! I am going to buy this recorder to use it for the 1080p. I want a better 1080p, not 4K out of the box. When I need the 4K I will just buy the Sony Package you guys are offering to unlock the Odyssey.

Option 2 is 10 Bit 1080p 4:4:4 right?

Well, let's please clarify then -- Dan -- would both options require the Sony upgrade?

I don't believe that you're saying you can deliver 10-bit 1080p from the FS700's SDI port. That's what I originally thought, but you said it wasn't an up-res, it was actually taking the higher quality source, so that would require that you have an upgraded FS700, would it not?

I have a feeling that both of these options require the Sony package (Dan, please correct me if I'm wrong). The Sony package is what allows the recorder to access the 4K raw stream from the FS700, which is what CD is using to create these 10-Bit 1080p recording. Without buying the package, the 7Q only accesses the 8-bit HD-SDI output from the camera.

Also, as Dan stated earlier, the 10-bit 1080p is 4:2:2 due to limitations from the sensor. (CORRECTION: I misunderstood an earlier post that was referring to 4K only. The 1080p will be 4:4:4 from all I can tell.)

I didn't see that post... but what sensor limitation would mean that 1080p from a 4K sensor must be limited to 4:2:2? Couldn't they just use the same non-demosaic interpretation of the data that Canon does, to get effectively 4:4:4 by using each rgbg pixel block as a unit for making an individual r:g:b 4:4:4 pixel?

Follow-up: are you referring to when Dan said not 4:2:2, but 10-bit, because 10-bit was a restriction of the codecs they're using?

Hello all. Definitely option 2 for me. For most of my paid work I would like to be able to use 10bit 422/444 as opposed to 8bit 420. 4K would not be suitable for the most of the projects I will be working on in the near future. The extra data archiving and managing costs make it unsuitable for most of my clients at the present time. Having said that I have a short film lined up in early 2014 which ail be shot in either 2K Raw or 4K compressed. Hence, an extra 60 days of waiting for 4K is not a major issue. The limitations of AVCHD are.

Option 2 would be of much more immediate and consistent use for the clients I have and their application needs. Smaller physical size of the unit like mentioned by Stev O is of much interest to me also. Would this still give all the same frame rate options currently offered by the FS700? GO ODYSSEY!

Barry, my apologies - I misread an earlier post that Dan posted saying that they couldn't get 4:4:4 from the sensor in 4K. I assumed that went for 1080 as well... but upon going back and reading more carefully, I see my error. The 4:2:2 restriction is for 4K content only. I have edited my above post with the correction.

The 1080 recordings should be in 4:4:4 color space.

I originally said option 1, thinking that you were talking about an upressed 10 bits. Option 2 for sure would better suit us in the immediate future- ie. usable from day 1 that we receive ours! From what I have seen so far, if shooting SLOG2, 10 bit is what we need to maximize that option. Will shoot ALOT more SLOG2 in the next 6 months than 4K, that's for sure! 4K to a compressed codec will be nice one day though :)

Option 2 for me. Much more practical in the immediate future and I'm sure we can all wait just a little longer for 4K ;-)

Just did a quick tally. I think everyone only voted once... Option 1 was leading by a huge margin for the first two pages, then the Option 2 votes started pouring in. One person changed from Option 1 to Option 2. Now it's pretty close. Although, since it sounds like the recorder will have 4K capture (just not "popular codec") at the time of release, I am changing my vote to option 2.

As of this post, the votes are (in my unofficial reading, and with my flip-flop):
Option 1 -- 13 votes
Option 2 -- 12 votes

Lets move towards sensibility and get a 10 bit 4:2:2 codec out of this puppy...I vote #2

Totals are now

Option 1 - 13 votes

Option 2 - 13 votes....and way more practical..lol

Option 2 for me as well! I have much more use for a high quality 1080. What will the fps limitation be?

option 1- 13 votes
option 2- 14 votes

I'll let Dan confirm, but I believe the camera will ship with 4K recording, just not in the "popular codec" flavor. But I could be wrong.

Obviously not only upgraded FS700, but the camera would be set to 4K raw (not to 2K raw that shows moire/aliasing) and Odyssey7Q will use that 4K raw as source to record 10-bit 444 1080p video.
