Odyssey7Q February 2014 Firmware Update

Question on the Icy Box IB-111StU3-Wh USB 3.0 Aluminium Docking Station for 2.5 inch or 3.5 inch SATA HDD

In the CLONING MODE, can you add files from the 2.5 inch drived to the 3.5 inch drive? In other words, does it wipe out whatever is on the destination drive or can you add to it?

I have not tried, but i purchased the unit out of the assumption that it does a CLONE of the SSD, thus wiping the HDD to copy the SSD. So i am buying a pack of cheap 500gig disks with plastic protection to bring with me. Thats cheaper than buying huge quality disks too.

I do not like to think about loosing 3-4 SSDs worth of material on 1 - one - big hard drive prone to failure in the field, or during transport back home. Id rather loose one out of 4 0,5tb harddrives rather than 2 terabytes of 4K material in one single hdd failure, so to speak.

Wow, can't believe how much this thread has exploded in 24 hours!
I see the record time capacities has been updated in the manual and noticed both flavours of prores record the same amount of minutes. My question is what is the point of one over the other? I mean, if 4ktohd is in there, what's the point of 4:2:2 to hd? I'm not sure why you would use one over the other I guess.
The Odyssey7Q accepts HD directly from many sources, including the FS700. Because we technically can accept the signal we list it in the manual, if for no other reason than to note that there is no memory savings to using one over the other. While I agree that one would likely never choose to take the 8-bit SDI feed when the 4K2HD is so nice, we do need to report that we can do it should someone choose to.

Have you actually tried a clone process and then a restore of some kind yet? Just wondering if there's any special formatting that the Odyssey does that a standard clone won't replicate? In theory a block for block clone should be OK - but worth testing.

Sounds good. But how about going the route of having the camera buffer its 4 seconds(or8 sec in 2k) and then recording that to prores 25 (or something) I'm sure people could deal with having to trigger the 7q manualy. Just putting it out there - not sure if it makes any sense technically. But if you already have a shoot where you do prores - it might be because of storage concerns (and that the image downscaled from 4k looks damn fine) - and so you'd be hesitant to switch to 4kraw or 2kraw modes for slowmo - and see your hd space go bye bye - along with the ease of post workflow. just thinking out loud here.
We will look into different ways we might implement such capablities in the future. Had to get the main stuff completed first.

Probably an ignorant question, but what disk space is used up by:

-“4K2HD” FS700 4K RAW to Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) 1920x1080 recording up to 30p

and

Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) 1920x1080 recording/playback up to 30p

Thanks advance.

Isnt it just plain old stoneage apple FAT32? Would be odd if CD invents its own filestructure.

I do not have disks to test it yet. They are on their way in the mail so i guess ill have tested it by 10 days time. Going away almost all of next week.

Thanks Mitch and the other guys for clearing it up. Was just curious, but It's quite awesome us lucky fs700 users get the nicer 4k2hd! :)

The SSDs do have to be formatted in the O7Q. Not sure if it's just default files etc that are written or something low level. Maybe Mitch can suggest if a clone will work ok and if there are any potential problems. Not trying to put a downer on it at all but worth checking before committing valuable data and formatting the SSDs.

Am I missing something? There wasnt a "Quick Start Guide" in the new firmware folder that I downloaded. There was in the original firmware folder but not the new one. I see it reference Clip Merger, however I thought that was for joining files that span 2 SSD drives.

The Quick Start Guide has been renamed the FS700 Setup Guide and is in the download folder. That utility program isn't up yet but will be soon. It will be found on our website under the DOWNLOADS tab.

There's also something else you should all try: a New LUT for use in Resolve. It's available here:

I think the O7Q format is needed because it adds custom file structure like folders and what not to the drives. Ofcourse, Mitch may chime into this discussion and elaborate on what the O7Q is actually doing during format. I am only expressing thoughts untill i get to test if this actually works. However, we wont be formatting the SSDs in the clonemachines though, just copy everything. And the company behind the clones states that the cloning process even works on system drives. Thats why i think its a very thorough cloning process.

Main reason i bought them however was to copy SSD to HDD manually, just like one is already doing with RED workflow on the set. I saw the cloning feature after actually getting them, so its a super bonus if it works. Question is: do we dare to clone without a computer to check that all files where actually transferred safely?

I dont think i trust that.

I'm afraid that the new firmware was released now. The stupid thing is: nobody is able to sell the device itself. No stock for german dealers :-/

But in case they deliver one to me: will I need a additional docking station to match both SSDs? Or is it possible to drag the datas directly from recorder to PC?

Is it now possible to record each format to the 7Q without any issue? No formatting between shots in RAW 240fps and 1080p 60fps?
Talk to you dealers and to the EU distributor Symbiosis about getting a unit in Germany. I know some German dealers have received and sold units. If you are waiting for them to be available sitting in stock then you will have a very long wait. Our orders keep coming in so we are perpetualy on backorder. If you have placed an order with a dealer and they have not received stock, then you need to talk to them about it. We have shipped a LOT of units.

You will need a SATA adapter to connect an SSD to a computer. The Odyssey7Q does not connect directly. I suggest going to Thunderbolt if you have it on your computer, otherwise USB 3.0. Do not use Firewire 800 or USB 2 as they will mean VERY long downloads. In the US I can find SATA to USB 3.0 adapters for $15.

Yes, you can now mix formats on the SSDs without issue.

Is it normal that I can only use SDI A input? I tried to plug the cable to the SDI B and it does not detect any input. (on a FS700)
We need to have SDI A always be active. Remember that we can also accept dual-link signals and eventually up to quad-link signals. Once there is something there the Odyssey can do the auto-detect to figure out the signal, but the process is driven by the SDI A being active first in line.

It would be ideal if the unit automatically detected which input was being used and just switched to that one. Next it could sense the data stream and have a popup box that directs you to switch modes based on that input. And THEN you could select your recording mode based on what is available for that particular type of input.

Ive had about a dozen people look at the unit so far and wished it were a bit more simple. I think that would be the best way to simplify that. One day, though!
A RAW data stream across SDI electronically appears the same as a video signal, it's just a stupid ugly green one. You have to the Odyssey a fighting chance by telling it what kind of signal to look for.

When capturing HD video to DPX or Apple ProRes, there is the place to input what type of camera is connected. The video will always be the same, but this helps determine some timecode alignment, run/stop trigger (different by manufacturer) and eventually will determine the appropriate LUT if you shoot in a Log mode. Canon C-Log is different from SLOG2, for instance.

We try to make the manus as simple as possible, but when you make a product that can do a great many things it necessitates more options in the menus. As we move forward we will continue to look at how we can keep the controls clear and simple. They're a LOT better than some other products out there!

Hi Mitch, is there a way to sync audio in RAW automatically or is it still not possible yet?
I think that's an implementation of Resolve or other post programs. These RAW files are actually stacks of individual stills, so they are addressed differently than a traditional video file with locked audio.

Never tried this device. The files are just the files. I would suggest you run a test and see for yourself.
