Odyssey7Q February 2014 Firmware Update

Anyone else having issues in Resolve with the 4K DNGs? Every time I try to load a shot, it says my GPU memory is full. I've got a 2012 MacBook Pro with 1GB VRAM. Not much, admittedly, but it doesn't do that with 2K RAW files (obviously I know those are much smaller...)
Here's some fun math for you:
4096x2160 in 12-bit.

4096 X 2160 X 12 = 106,168,320 per frame

You're gonna need a bigger boat.

Hey Mitch,

I have a tech question. I know you mentioned that 240fps in 10-bit Pro-Res might be possible. Right now, the 240fps requires two SSDs to record. If you guys can make it work on Pro-Res Quicktime, would you still need 2 cards to record? Which would be strange since I'm assuming the quicktime would only write to one drive and not be split across two.

So it's it possible to do 240fps to 1 SSD? That would make the FS700 pretty damn ultimate IMO.

I have not done that math but suspect that such a data rate would cleanly fit onto a single SSD. The challenge is in the proccessing of the frames at that speed. doing a good compression at that frame rate in realtime and maintaining both data rate and image quality is a hefty challenge. We don't want to do anything that we don't do well. Right now we're doing 30p. Soon it's 60p and then we'll have to see from there.

Yes you're right - I want to see what the CD "collapsable sunshade" is like
In case I didn't mention it before, at our NAB booth we will show a preproduction sample of our collapsable sunshade, as well as the new hood from Hoodman and the Westside AV hood solution. Lots of options available soon.

We have also created a new staff position to work on building up our website content (growing, growing, all so busy!), so soon all these products and lots of other information will be viewable on our website.

Why do you need a LUT?
All you need is basic color correction to get the video where you want.

Many types of productions do not allow for the extra step/control/communication in post that is required to properly achieve even basic color correction or applying a LUT in post, and some productions require images that are ready for broadcast.

Frankly if I'm handing off footage at the end of the day not knowing when or if or by whom it will be handled in post, I'd much rather the images I deliver reflect my intentions without any additional work. Even if there is every reason for the footage to be handled properly in post, it often still makes sense for playback or reference or many other reasons to be able to bake in a good starting point look to avoid extra work or confusion in dailies or the edit or wherever.

In the works.

Here's hoping for one that doesn't clip out highlights (or shadows) or have color fringing or any other artifacts.

Here's some fun math for you:

4096 X 2160 X 12 = 106,168,320 per frame

You're gonna need a bigger boat.

Just to be clear, that's 106Megabits per frame or 13.3MegaBytes per frame, but yeah still 4x as large as 2K.

Maybe can try just limit 240fps record in 10bit for few sec only if possible, or 120fps also welcome. Can't wait to receive my odyssey 7Q next month, thanks for the good work!

Hi Mitch

I must say, I'm impressed with your activity and openness on this forum. I would not have the patience for it :) Can understand why people might be frustrated with the delays, but you are doing what blackmagic design never did, communicate.
While I have tried to work my way through this topic and the one before it, I simply couldn't read all of it. So forgive me if this has been asked before.
Have you worked with panasonic to have the o7q or o7 work with their cameras? I am specifically thinking about the new gh4. I know it's still not out, but these guys mentions hooking up the gh4 to the o7q:

To me, judging from early reviews, that would be an absolute killer combination, for a VERY fair price. Of course the gh4 would probably have to have the big brick installed underneath, but even then!
If it's not possible at the moment, I urge you to work with them on that. I would find that extremely interesting.

Mitch,

Ditto for me, what Hooverboy wrote above.

I just pre-ordered a Lumix GH4 to use with the FS700, putting the GH4 in a Mōvi M5 stabilizer, which I also have ordered. That combination, the F700 and the GH4 in a Mōvi are what we need for documentary work, to spice it up. Will you support the GH4 with the Q7?

Does this firmware allow 1080 24p prores HQ or 4444 to be recorded from ANY camera's sdi out or hdmi out?

We are actively working on a 4K compressed video recording. When it is complete we will be able to capture the output of the GH4 (via the YAGH base) as well as other cameras which can output 4K over SDI, such as the Sony F55 and the new Phantom Flex4K. We will also be able to capture 4K from the Blackmagic Design Studio Camera with a small Blackmagic adapter.

Yes. We currently support Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) in HD up to 30p. For 444 capture or frame rates above 30p you will need to use DPX recording on the Odyssey.

Great! I have a shoot coming up using c300 and c-log. Are there lut featured enabled where I can record c-log, but view and output a LUT to another monitor? What about the f3?

Look in the folder that downloaded with your new firmware. There is a document called the FS700 Quick Start guide. Within it you with also find the information about the free utility program we created to address this.

The manual refers to a "CD Apple ProRess 422 File Transfer Tool" but I can't see it listed on the download page??

Has anyone else experienced the 7Q randomly turning itself off? It happened twice on yesterdays shoot. Luckily not half way through a take.
