Odyssey7Q February 2014 Firmware Update

Hi Mitch,
I assume its recording ProRes HQ, are there any plans for different flavours of the codec? And if so, will this be available in the 4K2HD and the standard 4:2:2 to HD ProRes recording modes?
Also, I'm still getting the diagonal fine jaggy lines on high contrast edges after the update. Is this something that can be improved on, or is it the nature of the OLED? I thought it was being fixed?

Thanks.

It's only taking me 15-20 seconds to switch between formats on the 7q. Plus if it were a lift ride is three minutes at my mountain lol
Are you switching between FS700 RAW and 4KtoHD modes? Hmm. Mine says 3min on the warning box and takes about that long.

Also, Mitch, not that it really matters for my usage, but is this ProRes 10-bit from 4K? I know you mentioned doing 12-bit in the future, just wanted to clarify what this was.

"Note: 4K Super slow is not supported on the Odyssey7Q; the camera only outputs a maximum of 4K 60p, thus this mode will use internal buffering, and then will need to playback the footage to an Odyssey7Q."

Mitch, this was previously said as being supported, is it just expected on a later firmware or not possible at all?
How does the Sony RAW recorder does it?

I wasn't sure i want to hop on board with the Odyssey 7Q. Figured i'd wait and see if anything trumps it at NAB.

BUT THEN I SAW THE CAT.

a little comparison ... its directly with 709 picture profile

I'll have to run it by my fiance tonight....

It's kind of funny, because the first thing I immediately noticed was how sharp the hairs on my cat were. Because... you know... cat videos... that's why I bought this thing.

4k2HD clip -- it's compressed to a 9 mbit h264 stream, but you can grab the original file off vimeo: https://vimeo.com/89567321

Following Mitch's advice on using the power cable to update the firmware, I finally pulled it out of the box (never used it before) plugged it in and no power whatsoever to the 7Q.
Yikes. Battery it is then.
Please contact our support desk to be issued an RMA.

I was wondering what the major difference between my cat test and the other cat test was... mine was Slog2. That Rec709 profile really falls apart in AVCHD.

Mitch, I just saw an issue where the screen flipped but was upside down i.e. with SSD'd at top, the image was showing upsdie down. Rotating the screen flipped the image but still upside down.

A reboot has fixed so far.

Have you seen this?
See if it ever happens again. It's very possible the inclinometer had to orient itself. Every now & then my iPhone insists on taking pictures upside down.

Do you know if the file is corrupted while shooting (i.e. a message, or issue with playback from the Playback mode?)

Then again, I've been on studio shoots where a DIT was constantly checking files from a KiPro because they had issues with files being messed up or dropping frames. No equipment is perfect.
FYI, after considerable discussion it was only a preponderance of caution that drove us to issue that warning. In our hundreds upon hundreds of tests we were only ever able to make this one failure without remedy occur, and we could not repeat it. These are the things that drive engineers nuts, searching for something that cannot be found or even repeated. To quote Blade Runner, it's like an itch you can't scratch.

When we said "on rare occassion" we really meant it. It happened once and may never ever happen again.

That said, I'm not sure if the Odyssey will give a warning as I'm not sure it will know it happened, but I will check.

Hey Mitch. There is a discussion over at Reduser. So the 7Q doesn't work with RED ONE? That's a bummer. It was on my list to use as a potential monitor. Can you please confirm.

Makes sense. I had a suspicion that your choice of the word "rare" meant that it was truly rare. Shooters just hate the idea of those moments being lost... like... tears in rain.

(sorry, I had to)

That was a bit misleading though - all previous talk said that the issue would be fixed in this update - not that Adobe still has to make a fix too! At least 4k2HD should work though?
Didn't mean for it to be and I take a chunk of the blame. It was not entirely clear to me how much would be on our side v. theirs. Other software like Cine Martin and our course Resolve has no issue, but we know y'all want Adobe products to fully integrate. I do beieve it will be soon.

Yes, 4K2HD results in standard Apple ProRes files, so you can use them wherever appropriate.

BTW, please note how we handle 4K2HD. If you want to use the FS700 & Odyssey7Q to simply deliver a kick-ass REC709 image with little to no post work, set the Picture Profile in the camera to IT709 (that's another name for REC709). If you want to get the most dynamic range out of the sensor and intend to spend time in color correction, then set the Picture Profile in the camera to SLOG2. Please note that for now these are the only two Picture Profiles supported, and selecting any other will result in odd color & contrast performance.

Is there a way to view the overlays that are on the FS700 Monitor (Shutter Speed, ISO, etc) on the Odyssey 7Q monitor?

Thanks!
That information is not transported through the RAW signal.

However, we do have a plan (for likely far in the future) in which we can route two signals separately in the Odyssey7Q. If there is a separate monitoring path to the record output path then we will (again, sometime in the future) allow one to record one signal while viewing the other on the OLED.

Many cameras have clean outputs for recording with second outputs that include overlays. This goes back to lots of 2/3" cameras. In the case of the FS700, even when the camera is in RAW output mode, the HDMI output can still show the overlays in the signal. So this is where we will (in the future) pull such a signal.

Hate to be a negative nancy, but why does changing modes take 3 minutes now? Kind of a productivity killer. Going to get lots of impatient eye rolls from producers.
It only happens between certain modes, and once some of them are loaded they will stay in flash memory for a quick change until they need to be pushed out of the way to make room for something else.

Our master chip can only hold a program loaded into active memory (as opposed to those stored on standby) of a certain size. We basically have room for two record/monitoring formats at a time. To load a new one up takes about three minutes (actually less, the longest it could take is three minutes).

To do it any other way would have meant a substantially more expensive, larger, heavier and more power-hungry device. We would have had to put in a bigger master chip and/or secondary chips.

Anyone else notice their unit running a lot hotter than before? Maybe it's just the update that heated it up - running at 50 deg C at the moment 24 C ambient
Some modes will consume more power and make the chip run hotter. It is rated to run up to 65 deg C and will warn you if it approaches a shutdown temperature. It is supposed to run warm.

The first function I used was the zoom function, the unit flipped out and went to black for 45 seconds.....
If this problem persists please let us (me) know.

If anyone else discovers issues please inform us (me). We try to test everything repeatedly but there's always a chance something could slip by. We intend to deal with such issues as swiftly as possible.

Anyone else having issues with the 7Q not being able to lock the input signal? I can't see anything in RAW mode and as soon as you try to record it fails and closes out the files...

On a good note normal ProRes seems to work!
Please try another SDI cable, reboot and let me know if this fixes the issue. 4K data rates are the torture test for SDI signal integrity.
