Odyssey7Q February 2014 Firmware Update

Man, the posts earlier today (Matt Allard and CD's Facebook page) really got my hopes up for the firmware today. Bummer.

Let's just keep our fingers crossed for tomorrow. I feel like they were close today, maybe some last minute tweaks.

Hello everyone. Very busy day today; that's why I have not been on the forum. Dan is travelling.

Matt Allard's article was posted by mistake. Various news sites prepare material in advance to be ready when the time is right, perhaps only needing minor adjustments to their copy instead of needing to write the whole thing from scratch. Unfortunately when it was posted the time was not quite right. But there is good reason for Matt and others to be well-prepared.

We hear all of your pleas, requests and complaints. We really do. It's killing us that this is not in your hands right now. But it soon will be. Very, very soon.

I understand that many of you are on tight schedules. I have been shooting professionally for 25 years and I really do understand the deadlines and the pressures involved. We are going to make you happy very soon.

Stay alert. As soon as we can bring you the firmware upgrade we will. And I emphasize SOON. Home stretch now guys. Please note my change in tone.

Yeah, I definitely wouldn't buy from CD again at this point. I had to rent the Sony unit 4 times since purchasing this unit. If the 7q 2k raw was usable and not a recipie for crashing and losing files I wouldn't be complaining but not only has CD fail to deliver on Any new capability, Cd has failed to even attempt to make the unit usable for the 4 months I have owned it. I have started to advise friends in industry to avoid the headache and just pony up the extra $$ for an aja ki pro 4k and a minitor or the sony unit. Dan specifically said it wouldn't be weeks and if it was they would at least have a backup plan. It appears their backup plan is blowing smoke up our you know what about having a backup plan as they allow their customer base to have to wait around due to their own poor planning while they wait for apple. (I'm in no way blaming apple, they didnt make me any promises nor did they make a bug filled recorder )

I wondering if Mitch or anyone else can answer the question about the lut support on the odyssey 7q? Can a lut (like CaptainHook's lut) be loaded to the 7q so one can view footage from the blackmagic production 4K camera with the lut applied? Is anyone using the 7q with the BMC4k? What are the positive and negative for using the 7q with the BMC4k? I am interested with the 7q because I don't have a monitor and I also have the fs700 and the bmc4k. I will use the 7q as a 4k recorder for the fs700 and as a monitor for both cameras. Thanks in advance for any response!
We do not yet have such LUTs enabled, but will in a future firmware update. The 4K output of the BMD camera is via their own 6G-SDI output. For the Odyssey7Q to accept this signal, a BlackMagic Design Mini Converter SDI Multiplex box is needed. This small box will convert the 6G-SDI into 3G-SDI or 1.5G-SDI, which an then be viewed by the Odyse7Q. The BMD box can also power off 12v so it can be easily mounted to the back of the Odyssey or alongside the BMD camera.

Yeah we've been waiting a while. We all knew the risks, and wanted the rewards. Maybe it hasn't paid off yet, but CD has been fairly upfront about it. They could have spent a bunch of time recoding it all only to have the Prores come through and waste all that time, we all heard it, and I dare say most of us agreed with CD's decision. It sucks, we all know, but it won't be the first time you have to wait for something you are looking forward to. patience is a virtue.

Thanks

While it sucks to not have all of the capabilities, I've been pretty happy with the 2K RAW recording from my 7Q. I've definitely been able to get shots that wouldn't have been possible without the device (slow motion that required more than 8 seconds). I haven't really had a need for 4K yet. And most of my shoots can't justify renting cameras like a RED, Phantom, etc. So maybe we are in different boats.

I wasn't mad until today.
yeah....i think i'm now in this camp as well - and I've been a pretty solid proponent and fan til now.
(oh - and one of the early adopters, too....but i might have FINALLY learned my lesson about buying gear that has "promises" attached)

Sorry CD, but it's the way it is.

The 2k functions in the literal sense but the potential for disc issues and the constant white balance issue make it unfit for a lot of the workflows I do. I'm not trying to sound like a jerk I'm trying to sound like someone that makes 100% of his income doing dp post and cam op work along with rentals. There are a lot of buggy issues with this hardware that do need to be fixed for me to trust it. I understand having reasonable expectations and being patient, but I also understand I purchased an atomos right when it came out and it worked much better, my pix works much better and always has, all my SD sound recorders delivered much more usable items without this much trouble ( I bought the 633 the month it debuted ) when I had a sensor issue with my Sony fs 100 they received it and returned it to me fixed and cleaned free within a week, and back in my panasonic days I had multiple issues with gear, drove to their west coast facility and had it dealt with promptly. Patience is fair when waiting for extra features. Spending over $1800 renting replacement equipment wears my patience out when I get "any day now" as an answer for 20 days straight.

Hey Mitch,

Thanks for the update. I have quick question. How large is the file size of the firmware download? Will it be small hopefully? The reason I ask is on Thursday I will be traveling to a shoot that will take place on Friday. Since I'm traveling, I will probably have a fairly slow download speed from a hotel, so I'm hoping it will download quickly.

I'm obviously hoping it won't come down to me downloading it on the road. Please get it to us on Wednesday if possible.

God speed on the release.
