Odyssey7Q February 2014 Firmware Update

The file is small. Not sure the size but the last test download I did took maybe thirty seconds on my laptop at hone, so even with a slow connection it should be pretty quick. If you want to test you can try downloading the current firmware (the one that's already in your Odyssey) off our website. The new firmware won't be that much larger.

Loading onto the Odyssey is a different matter. It can take 15 minutes or more to reflash the chip. You need to make sure you have plenty of power so that you do not suffer a shutdown during the ref lash, bricking your Odyssey. The unit is recoverable, but it's not something you want to deal with. We suggest plugging into AC power for this.

Matt Allard's article was posted by mistake. Various news sites prepare material in advance to be ready when the time is right, perhaps only needing minor adjustments to their copy instead of needing to write the whole thing from scratch. Unfortunately when it was posted the time was not quite right. But there is good reason for Matt and others to be well-prepared.

We hear all of your pleas, requests and complaints. We really do. It's killing us that this is not in your hands right now. But it soon will be. Very, very soon.

Mitch,

Very, very soon sounds really promising, I understand you're not telling any fixed deadline, but now we all are in a very uneasy situation not knowing which output (and workflow!) we can deliver to the client on already fixed shooting dates this and next week, but you know shifting this shooting dates is not acceptable for a client, so no option for us. Every production starts in the head.

I really esteem the possibility of the direct communication with you and Dan, may you can tell us whats happening behind the scenes and what are the last steps you guys have to solve before putting the new firmware on the website? So we can calculate today when we're able to finally use the device.

Thanks in advance

Blimey Mitch, do you ever sleep? ;)

You could always post me the firmware to test how quick it downloads - promise I wont use it ;)

Mmmmm, I'm going to have a wild swing at what I'm guessing is happening here.

Its seems obvious that CD have the permission clearance, so I can only assume that because the firmware wasn't setup ready to be online as soon as clearance was given, that the extra delays for clearance has enabled the CD technicians to squeeze in some additions which we may be pleasantly surprised with. My guess is the 4k compressed option may be included???

Also for anyone in the know, if you had the choice between the 10bit compressed or the 12bit compressed from the raw file when it's released, is there any reason other than size that you would choose the 10bit compressed over the 12bit?

Who knows - maybe some of the documentation wasn't ready or they found a last minute bug or issue - or hopefully a nice new feature was added. I hope future updates will be quicker and less prone to delay. Mitch has indicated so, but lets see. I would definately want to see bug fixes given a priority and not delayed for new features like has happened here.

For me, I just need it out. Just want the bugs fixed and 4:2:2 10-bit HD and everything else can come later. I have a good days traveling tomorrow to an out-of-state shoot and the last thing I'm hoping to do is to have to update the firmware on the road. I did promise the client 4:2:2 10-bit, so it would be embarrassing to give them AVCHD and RAW is probably a little too crazy for this job since it involves lots of B-Roll.

PLEASE, get it out today. I just don't want to look bad to a new client.

I need it for tomorrow too, big time. I must say, because of the buzz yesterday and against all better judgement, I was expecting to wake up and see it available with a chance I could test it today, though gawd knows why I thought that with their track record! Hoping to be proved wrong, mind.

I need it for friday.

Wouldnt mind testing it today/tomorrow.

Just release it on piratebay or something. Blame an assistant afterwards, when apple is angry.

The crowd is growing restless... Today has got to be the day. Any longer and there will be riots in the streets... or on the FS700 section of DVXuser, at least.

Its just sad, that most of the people arent glad anymore that the fs700 gets a whole lot better, but rather be pissed off of promises. But thats the result of over promising and under delivering. The product gets more and more unappreciated and thats just sad because it doesnt deserve it.

Were annoyed that we are paying interest (yes, everything we own is put on loan as long as we have a mortgage, houseloan) on an upgrade we cannot use.

I even imported my unit from USA, in anticipation of the FEB upgrade.

Seems i couldve just waited and purchased a local unit without shipping fees and less warranty hassle since they did not deliver anyways.

I'm just curious to know what the hold up is, if they are planning on releasing it today. Can't be file size/server stuff. Does it take a long time to compile the firmware file? Last minute additions or bug fixes? I can't be the only one refreshing the firmware page every 30 seconds.

The current radio silence is a bit worrying. Understandable, though, given the recent problems. I have a shoot on saturday, but it would be nice to have the update sooner so I can do some tests.

It's not apple thats delaying. Its on CD's end.

I hope they release it now so that people can get on and satisfy their customers.
