Odyssey7 & Odyssey7Q Status Update

Well, actually I don't have the 7Q yet, but hoping they get the firmware out to hear reports of how the HD super sampled from 4K is before deciding if I should sell my b-cam (EA50) to buy the 7Q. In a way the delays are good for me cause they save me from spending money ;)

I hear ya, dmitrizigany. I've been holding off a bit on the 7Q, just to see some footage from the recording options i think i'd use the most. Also in case something major is announced at NAB that becomes a "must have". However, already having the FS700 makes it so, for around $4k, i could have a camera that's hard to beat. Not even sure i'd take a RED over this combo. Only long term problem i see is maybe the size of the whole kit? But they'd have to announce something pretty darn small and inexpensive for me to re-think it. In the mean time, like you, i'm trying to save money!

It's not about entitlement- you sound like I am a welfare recipient demanding free food, rent, money, healthcare, etc etc. I am not. I am not saying that I am ENTITLED to anything. What I said was that other companies offer discounts when them do not meet expectations. Whether it be a delay, flickering screen, inop features or whatever. This is the way the real world works - not just in the monitor business. And i gave a perfect example of that with the Movi M5 - they promised a certain date and to keep the deposits longer than expected they gave a 500 dollar credit to those offected. I have already placed my order - and waiting for it to arrive after I personally spoke to reps at CD and was assured when it would come out. and yes, absolutely, when a company promises something and it effects people in any way it is nice, not entitlement for them to take a hit to their profit margin to those who they let down in any shape or form.

Same goes for large purchases like aircraft. If a scheduled delivery is delayed - there is a reflection in price. If the aircraft comes in heavier than promised there is a discount. Same goes for just about everything under the sun. Why do you seem so offended about the suggestion? Do you have a financial interest in the company? I think THEY should make that decision - and I think THEY should consider doing just that for those who are being strung along - or in your case having flickering screens.

This is still a free country, smacking down my ideas like you own the joint is just a power trip on your part. Let them answer me not you. And yes, they should do something for all of us who have committed to buying one, called them for updates and have been let down time and time again. I absolutely am being strung along - if they can't churn them out by a given time they should just say so... and like every business from printing, to raw materials, to steel, to aircraft to textiles to redecorating - you give a deadline and if it's not done on time the buyer should be compensated. Maybe it'll be a discount, maybe it will be a codec, maybe it will be a charger or battery - something for those who they let down, because in the end of the day no matter what you make - it's all about customer service not the product itself that matters. That is why apple is so successful, sure you pay for it, but damn it, they stand behind their product with some amazing service.

Yikes. No one is forcing you to make this decision. Sounds like you just need to reclaim your deposit and find an alternative recorder for the fs700. Of course it will cost you triple but you can have it tomorrow!
It was really quite clear from day 1 that they would be servicing a HUGE demand.

I'm not saying it's not frustrating and I had to wait nearly 3 months on the preorder list....but dude, CD is the only company in the world that took the risk to develop this product.

Without them you would still have only 2 options...invest in a another 4k raw camera system or buy the ridiculous Sony r5 solution.

Seriously man, CD have done an incredible thing and owe you exactly what you willingly bought into. No one has tricked or forced you into waiting on a preorder list. They have been traparent about that from day 1. (And just about everything else too. Where else can you report a bug on a random forum and the director of communications personally sends it to the engineers!)

I hate to tell you, but this is the norm with cutting edge tech in the film industry. Look how long Red makes people wait with new releases. Look how long black magic takes. This stuff is the frontier and small outfits like Convergent Design should be applauded for bringing something as incredibly complex as the Odyssey to market.

How often do companies discount or offer something for free because a new product is delayed? I've not heard of that before. I think the example you gave is quite rare.

As you point out, you live in a free country as does most if not all of the other people on this forum. You've expressed your opinion, they've expressed theirs, they've as much right to it as you.

I'm with them. Whilst nobody enjoys the delays, it's part of a new development, delays happen. You have the option, to wait for what you want or get your deposit back and go and buy something else, if you choose to get a refund on your deposit from your dealer, all you've lost is the (pitiful!) potential interest on your deposit (unlike aircraft, where options are limited and delays cost the business a lot of money).

Can't comment on Movi, highly unusual, perhaps refund options there were limited by contract?

We all need to take a chill pill.

CD have indeed developed a fantastic solution for us and have been transparent in their efforts from the beginning.
all other solutions pale in comparison in terms of price, size, options, power draw and monitor quality.
It is crazy file sizes at the mo with dpx uncompressed (last night shot F35 50p and filled both 512's in under 2 hours, then took 3 hours to transfer to MacBook with USB 3 HD's), and lacking some features, but as is with new development products, we have to be patient and wait. I'm sure no one is more anxious for the new firmware to be released than CD.

I came from recording the F35 to a heavy cinedeck with it's own vlock bat 190w/h tethered to my waist, to an onboard 7Q running off the same 190w/h vlock as the camera and each lasted 2 hours powering both cam and 7q! So I'm using half the battery power I used to and basically doubled my battery capacity for any given shoot day. That alone is worth the 7q for me, even if they never updated it ever again I'm happy.

Hang in there people. Any more from CD would be bonus, not necessity or given rights.

It is a little funny seeing time pass and people either become unreasonably mad at CD, or unusually sympathetic. No part of me expects CD to give me any money back or anything like that. On top of that, I'm glad everything is going well for some people Justin. What makes it very annoying is I literally can't use this piece of equipment at all due to the bugs it has, such as flicker, hard drive problems, and then white balance issues. I just want the units core functions fixed, (and I won't lie fulfilling lapsed promises would definitely be great.) until that happens, I'm using my PIX for any real jobs. So let's hope CD moves their butt, and stops saying things like "Oh yeah, this week" "this month" and so forth and just delivers.

maybe I did sound over sympathetic, but I'm trying to be neutral.
But if you say the core functionality is not performing, and with bugs, then the next firmware is of more necessity than any bonuses.
Apologies, I don't own an FS700 and wasn't aware of the issues.

Justin, I definitely wasn't making any complaints about your comment or anything like that, trust me, I genuinely am glad that the unit is working on other cameras properly, there's nothing at all to apologize for. I was just being a smart ass about how the message board seems to have gone towards two extremes, either "I hate CD, their lack of software has actually ruined my life" lol, to "guys, CD has given us this awesome tool, everyone relax."

no problem. I think we all would just like to shoot pretty pictures now, and had enough of the technical drawbacks, and since its within reach and we can almost smell the freedom, its getting a bit unbearable to wait for what seems now to be only politics.

CMON APPLE!!!! give the certification already!!
or
CMON CD!!!! LEAVE OUT THE PRORES, GIVE US THE CORE UPDATES NOW (PLEASE) AND WE CAN WAIT FOR THE CODECS!!!

Hi Mitch. I suspect that the Canon update is not what is holding up the update, Can you guys separate it out? My C500 is begging you.
