Odyssey7 & Odyssey7Q Status Update

Appreciate it guys. I know how you all feel and also know enough to step back and let you express it.

For the outputs from FS700, let me clarify the roadmap:

1- 2K RAW up to 240p (current)
2- 4K RAW up to 60p w/120fps burst (in imminent firmware update)
3- HD video recording in popular codec 422HQ, up to 30p and sourced from camera video output not RAW (in imminent firmware update)
4- HD video recording in popular codec 422HQ, up to 60p and sourced from camera video output not RAW (in later release)
5- 4K RAW converted to 4K video, supersampled to HD and recorded in popular codec 422HQ (planned for this release, may push to ensure optimum image quality -- we are tweaking now)
6- 4K RAW converted to 4K video, supersampled to HD and recorded in popular codec in 444 (in later release)
7- 4K RAW converted to 4K video, recorded in 4K in popular codec 422HQ (in later release)
8- 2K RAW converted to 2K video, recorded in 2K in popular codec 422HQ up to high frame rates (in later release, currently testing data rates)

Eight different recording format options on just one camera. The only change listed above to what was previously announced is in #5. We are adding additional tweaks to our supersampling conversion from 4K to HD to optimize the picture quality. You can look at the image we deliver right now that converts the 4K to HD; you can hook your Odyssey7Q up to a large monitor and see it. We think it quite nice but it was really designed just for monitoring, not as a final recorded master. So we have dramatically improved it. But as one only gets one shot at a first impression, we want it to be as good as possible so we may need to hold back on that one a bit to tweak it as we can. I will note that if we release the firmware update and then have this function finished a week later, we're not going to make anyone wait until our next round of planned firmware updates to add it in. We're all tired of the waiting game.

I just bought a 7Q and have been really excited about its capabilities. I just got out on a series, and unfortunately, we're stuck shooting to tape on the company's HDX900. Though I'll be recording on the 7Q shortly, for the moment, I only need a monitor, and this was the reason to pull the trigger on the purchase.

So here we are, needing to shoot 720p. I guess I should have done my research, but why would I ever think of the possibility that I wouldn't be able to even view 720p on an HD monitor?? Needless to say, I'm stuck in a pretty embarrassing situation with just a black and white viewfinder, and this thing is pretty useless to me right now.

Again, in all the research and all the forum following I HAVE done in preparing for this purchase, I somehow missed the basics. I hadn't really felt the need for firmware updates quite as urgently as many users on this forum until now, and I still am excited about the recording use for other projects, but I just had to join the club and vent a little.

Thanks for the update Mitch. Shame about #5, sounds like that won't make it for the next release. Glad you will release this ASAP though without having to wait for the next major update. PLEASE don't let this change, for me, this is the most anticipated update.

Actually, I think people on the FS700 forum are really mellow in general. Things get heated on occasion, but you go on EOSHD or the NoFilmSchool forum, those people are psychotic, camera Nazis who behave like 3rd graders high on pixel peeping. Makes me happy this forum isn't like that.

Yeah your right, i might have made it sound worse than it is. :) You should visit some of the Playstation vs xbox forums, they never get tired of fighting that war.

Mitch:
Good to hear that whenever nr 5 is ready you will release it.

Playstation? xbox? What's it about? Never heard about it. SCNR ;-)

Yeah, I like this forum very much esp. the kindness and politeness of all participants. A big thanks from me to everybody! Not forget to mention Mitch for his presence and his time spending here, also after upcoming disappointment after delay of FW update. Thanks!

Edit: Nevermind! I tracked down some clips online and tested them out in PP, worked great! Getting closer to ordering the 7Q each day, whether i can afford it or not!

Probably a beginner question, but what could i do with "Popular Codec" files on a Windows PC?

The recording formats are VERY exciting, but i've never dealt with footage in this codec. Can it be imported and edited in Premiere Pro on Windows?

I have PP CC. Also Quicktime. :)

Premiere can read ProRes on Windows. ffmpeg can transcode to ProRes on Windows (AnotherGUI uses ffmpeg with a GUI for batch processing). DNxHD can be read/written on both Windows and Mac...

Mitch,

Can you comment on the priority of #7? (4K PopCodec) I believe that was originally much higher on the priority list, but got bumped for supersampled 4K (#5). I'm just a little concerned it's after #6.
I realize you're overwhelmed right now, and while we're all pretty well focused on getting access to #2 and #5, I definitely see my company using a lot of #7, as it removes any chance of supersampling problems while not being nearly as heavy as 4K Raw. Looking at it logically, it seems that if #5 is possible, #7 would only be an easier implementation of the same technology? I'm sure it's more complicated than that, but I just was hoping for a ballpark assessment.
As in, do you plan on pushing out #7 as soon as possible, or is that being saved for another full firmware update that might come many months later? I know better than to try to get specific dates, but just looking for a general litmus test of the situation.

I think most of us would love to see the fixed #1 and the new awesome #2 mode.
#3 and #4 is the reason why we all hate the original image from the camera, so #5 (and #6) is really the perfect solution for HD and #7 for 4K (so specially #7 is needed).
#8 is new and sounds great if possible!!

I can imagine tweaking the 4K image to get the perfect HD is like a Sisyphus-work. But we are not to lazy to update the device a few more times ;-)

I love all of it. #8 super slow mo would be amazing and cherry on the ice cream float.

We just need to get over the first hump, hopefully very soon. I have fingers crossed and taking the glass half full outlook.

Mitch, do you know when you expect to have a steady stream of 7Q's available? More specifically, do you know when B&H will get in a new shipment?

How about 4K RAW converted to 4K video, supersampled to 2K and recorded in popular codec 422HQ. Should be even easier than converting to HD as aspect ratio is the same. No? And if your project is in HD it allows for a small degree of panning.

3 + 4 ??? Why are you working on those? If I understood correctly the cam puts out 8 bit in a 10 bit wrapper. Would 3 + 4 be any different than taking the default source .MTS files and converting them myself in my NLE?

Er. Because the O7Q isn't an accessory to the FS700. It's a universal recorder and there a tonne of people who own other cameras that would find those capabilities very very useful. F3 owners in particular.
