Odyssey7 & Odyssey7Q Status Update

Terry and Texas Media Systems are definitely the place to purchase a 7Q. We got ours from them back during the first shipment. They were quick, beyond helpful, and super professional.

I can't really comment on the development and release priority of these different formats. It's actually a fluid thing, as we see what works better than other things, so what we may think is next this week may turn out to drop down on the list as something else turns out to be quicker to complete. Then there's that certification question -- some formats require certifications from other parties when there is a new implementation. So while we have our own opinion of what should and likely will come next, that may change. Also, given the last dozen or so posts, i don't think everyone here would have the same opinion as to the order anyway.

As to availability, it is not proper for me to publish what different dealers have ordered and the delivery schedule. I can tell you that we have shipped a LOT of units, and we are shipping large quantities on a weekly basis.

I can also tell you that some reports of certain international dealers not getting their fair share of product have been false. Several companies have presented themselves to customers as dealers of the Odyssey7Q, when in fact they are not and are instead "two-stepping" the product from other companies. Then they contact us asking for product but they are way at the bottom of the list, with hundreds and hundreds of orders ahead of them.

There is a list of Convergent Design dealers on our website:
http://www.convergent-design.com/Dealers.aspx

If a company believes it is a dealer and is not properly listed on our website, please contact us.

Fair enough. It does seem like bug fixes and #5 probably most important to a lot of people, looking at the posts.

Frankly, I'll take anything at this point.

I have a feeling the 7Q Pro-Res is pretty solid right now, so after reading a number of negative reviews on the 4K Black Magic image - white dots all over the image, vertical lines in low light, 800 iso is very noisy, and a host of other image issues - I'm wondering why Apple is giving Convergent Design such a hard time? If you look at the review of the BM 4K below, I would be very nervous using it for anything other than a fun camera test.

Obviously, if the BM 4K passed, Apple's certification requirement for Pro-Res can't be all that stringent.

Well in BMD's defense, it looks like their prores encoder does very faithfully record the images with all of their sensor problems :P

So it's hump day... Is the popular codec certification in sight? Just wondering if the end of this week is still an option.

How soon will the rollout occur after getting certification? Just wondering if it's a simple "we got the email! Update the link on the site!" Or if it will take a day to get things updated.

I hope the 4k from the fs700 is better than the 4k from the bmc camera. being more filmic. ill be spending $5500.00 to get 4k for my FS700 and that could have been a BMC 4k as a second camera.

After reading that review and comments below from users, I'm not sure you would want the BMPC as even your 3rd camera. Seems like some major issue need to be worked out first. I think you made the right choice with the 7Q by a mile.

Am I the only one that refreshes this page in hope?

I've heard so many dates, read the "tic toc" with high hopes, but still, nothing.

Don't know about you guys, but if I made this to my clients I would be out of business by now.
No offense for anyone, but this is unbelievable.
Waiting for ProRes? Sometimes I forget that there are still people falling into Apple.

But the business of coding, hardware and software development are very different from ours, in my opinion. I experience bugs in my software every now and then that causes hiccups that I have to work around to get jobs done... but these guys have to hunt down and find these bugs and diagnose them at a code level. There are no workarounds for what they're doing. Especially not when they know that the moment they release it, we will all be pixel peeping at their work in the way that we do ;)

I love video production, but I can't imagine the stress and complexity of coding.

So, I do not find this unbelievable. I actually find it very believable, and to a certain degree, understandable. And once the O7Q is up to full speed, I'm sure we'll all be swearing by it.

But to answer your question, no, you are not the only one refreshing that page. I can't wait to use the new features once they're here.

Refresh this page, look at DVINFO, check all of Mitch and CD tweets every 30 mins or so in the hope... ;)

they seem to be fairly quiet at the mo, maybe they're putting finishing touches to the firmware release info and testing? ;)

@ brazzam

when doing a business its the results that counts. it doesnt matter if u are coding an odyssey or making videos or making donuts. over promising and under delivering is always bad. its all about reputation. but i think CD is aware of that, its just a shitty situation. quick tip: dont ever promise anything .... just deliver and the people will love you.

serious question from non business oriented guy-- why dont companies, instead of hyping a product months or years ahead of time, and then releasing early, just quietly build the thing in secret, get it perfect, THEN release and market the hell out of it? i know its somehow a money thing, but i dont know how/why?

Big companies are doing exactly that and yes its a money thing but also its a thing of reputation. They announce their product when its ready and they do not need any hyping because they know they have their customers. (Sony, Apple, Arri etc.)

Well - when I was considering the F5 camera it would have certainly been useful to me to know if there was a new Panny or Canon around the corner - teasing can make sense.

In this case, I think it is just a little different Apple probably being a pain - mainly because they are sooo massive and beauracratic (I guess).

But according to one report from Dan, Apple have been really helpful and CD failed twice to get the ProRes specs quite right. Can't blame Apple for wanting their codec to be properly implemented. Otherwise there would be a multiple of problems down the road.
Now of course CD wouldn't say anything else than Apple was helpful officially and he sure didn't say that they failed to get the specs right, but that's what you get from reading between the lines.
So I guess it's just a case of unexpected issues. Maybe Apple's approval bureaucracy is taking time, maybe it's the changes CD had to make to make the specs were more problematic than they thought. We'll most likely never know.

Mitch did say on Tuesday (twitter) that it was "in paperwork stage now" - so I take that as engineering complete and waiting on final approval paperwork.
