Odyssey7 & Odyssey7Q Status Update

The Firmware rental program is not yet enabled.

As for maximum frame rate, this is dependent on signal format sent to the Odyssey7Q. In 4K RAW the current max is 60p (that's on the Canon C500). In 2K RAW, 240p off the FS700 is the max.

But in theory we could handle more data in either of those resolutions.

hey guys - not sure if this is the right thread for this or not, but I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with a Convergent Design SSD not working in the 7Q? I ordered a couple of 512GB CD drives, and one of them gives a "NOT QUALIFIED" error and will not format or record. There's scarce troubleshooting documentation, and I'm assuming I've likely been sent a bad drive, but can't seem to find any info.

I don't think it's a "bad drive" as much as I believe we may not have properly set it after our QC.

Please reach out to our Support Desk on our website and we'll get it sorted for you. Not sure if we can do this remotely, but we'll make it right.

This is getting really old. No offense.

When I called Conv. Design myself in January they said "oh, it'll just be a little while longer, we gotta just get the 7q's out"

now it's, "we gotta get passed the hump on the firmware update"

I get it, you want people to buy the 7q - but you've been promising the 7 for a long long long long long long time - and I am just going to buy a different unit- I've been waiting since October and it's just not working out.

hang on, I'll go to competitor site and see if there is a delay there

NOPE - DP7 is on it's way!

yeah but DP7 was a long time coming wasn't it - they announced and it took quite a while to ship IIRC?

Honestly, not right now. I just don't have those kind of needs. Things I shoot tend to be for the web and I normally use an EX1 or 5D, maybe C100 in the future. Unless someone REQUESTS the fancier codecs, I deliver the camera's native files. Even for my own projects I'm okay with the compressed stuff since I'm not really doing the festival thing much anymore so why worry how it'd look on the big screen?

You know what - thats not my problem about it not coming out back then. I am talking NOW- since todays purchase decision is the one that CD should be most concerned about. They don't have their product available after saying it would be, and I need to purchase a monitor. I called for updates and every time the timeframe was pushed back further and further.

And another thing - there should be absolutely no splice in pointing out other companies problems getting their product shipped. There is no safety in numbers here. If your friends jumped off a bridge....

I understand fanboy protection, heck, I want to be a fanboy, but when I called three times over several months and the story keeps changing it makes me mad... you can't get mad if you don't like what they have to offer in the first place... in the same way only people who you care about can let you down.... yeah- it's exactly like that.

I would love to hear CD come out with an absolute date which they promise to have the 7's by. They should issue a number to everyone who requests one, and if they are late again they should offer everyone that was waiting a discount. Thats basically what Movi did with the M5, they were running late so they just gave everyone waiting a 500 dollar discount.

I have a question about the 4k "popular codec" stuff.

Mitch posted that we will get the 4k burst 120fps by using the FS700's buffer (since it plays it back to the recorder at your desired framerate) - DOES this mean that we will get the super sampled popular codec stuff in 120 fps playing back at 30p on the odyssey? That would be a dream, and in my mind, it makes sense that it would work....

I tried searching for his question directly, but didn't find anything, sorry if it was already asked....

While I agree with you that it's annoying/disappointing to have the dates pushed back, under no circumstances are you entitled to some sort of discount. Delays are a reality of product releases. CD has put a lot of time, skill, and money into research/development of this device. I think it's humorous that you feel like you are entitled to a discount because you've possibly been inconvenienced by the delays. And this is from someone who has been critical of delays and the recent delay in the firmware. I got my 7Q much sooner than many people, but I've had to deal with flickering on the screen, restarting it multiple times on shoots because it won't take the SDI input, etc.

The reality of the situation is that if you need something right now, there are options out there. Need a monitor? Buy or rent a SmallHD. Need a recorder? Buy or rent one of the many options out there. It's our job as shooters to use the tools that are available to us.

Interesting question. I'm not sure how the camera handles outputting that signal. But I think it simply plays the buffer out at a standard frame rate. If so, then yes, we should be able to accept it.

Haha well that's definitely the start of a positive message! I think people would love this feature. Basically giving them some of the functionality of how the FS700 works internally now, but straight to our highly desired popular codec goodness and not having to transcode the DNGs!

Yeah that would be nice! But for now/soon I still think that being able to do the regular speeds up to 60 frames per second in popular codec is awesome enough (especially 12 bit 444 popular codec :D nom nom nom Ill eat that **** like milk and cereals). And if you need higher speed you can do a 2k or 4k raw high speed if needed. But I do think that it would be a really nice option to have down the road.

I think it is refreshing to see that as good as it is at the moment (minus the quirks it has now) it is not enough because it can do more. It feels like it will evolve to something even more epic and that convergent design are willing to take the 7Q as far as it can go.

Nice to hear from you again Mitch! Dvxuser is a passionate forum for good and bad i guess :)

Actually, I think people on the FS700 forum are really mellow in general. Things get heated on occasion, but you go on EOSHD or the NoFilmSchool forum, those people are psychotic, camera Nazis who behave like 3rd graders high on pixel peeping. Makes me happy this forum isn't like that.
