Hi Guys

Brought a c500 and looking at a 7q to record the 2K

I have seen one but it does. It include a battery pack. What do I need and how many batteries?

What accessories will I need to mount and General accsories

And what is the workflow for the 2K in premiere pro?

Thanks

Dear Oliver,

Good Morning, I am Dan Keaton of Convergent Design.

Both the Odyssey7Q and the Odyssey7Q+ support the C500 in 2K mode. No extra cost option is required for recording in 2K from the C500.

You may use DPX file format for the 2K recording, and this is full uncompressed video, thus the ultimate in 2K image quality, but the files are large.
The camera should be in RGB444 mode.

Or you may record in Apple ProRes 422 (in HQ, regular, LT or Proxy) provided the camera is set to YCC422 mode.

If you want to record RGB 4:4:4, please set the C500 for RGB444 mode, and select Apple ProRes 4444 in regular or XQ in the Odyssey.

---------

There are many mounts available for the Odyssey7Q and Odyssey7Q+. You may consider a Noga arm, as this is very flexible.

We have many battery mounts (battery cradles) available. One is for the Canon BP type batteries, another is for the Sony L-Series Battery, such as the Sony NP-F970.
Another is for the Sony BPu60, BPu90 battery, this is our Sony U-Series battery plate.

The 14.4 volt batteries, such as the Sony BPu60/BPu90 provide longer run time over the smaller, less powerful NP-F970 battery.

Beware, there are a lot of counterfeit NP-F970 batteries and these must be avoided.

If you are shooting outside, I recommend a Sun Hood.

We provide 24/7 support, so please feel free to call me:

In the USA, seven one nine --- nine three zero --- one three seven six.

During regular business hours, in Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA, our main number is 720-221-3861.

Hi There Dan,

Can you send me a private email with your details email link.

I have brought a used 7Q with raw bundle D Tap and V lock adapter. What is the best rig/setup for the DTAP and V LOCK?

Thanks

Hi Oliver,
I also recently purchased an Odyssey 7Q+ for the C500. The Xtender 3rd party adapter (available from USA) is great for quickly mounting the 7Q+ onto the front shoe at the top of the C500. I found other arms and options awkward and unstable. Regards workflow and Premier on the cloud, I am new to bringing in the files, but did some tests yesterday. RMF and Apple Prores files pull in easily (4K and 2K at 24fps). DPX at 12bit RGB 4.4.4 gives a "video codec bit-depth not supported" message. There is freeware from convergent design that merges the many clips into one. I wil give that a go, but I found that After effects opens the 12 bit DPX file easily and one can export if from there as DPX and open that in Premier. (Although I am not sure what that is doing to the - it may be causing a loss of bit depth. Something else that is useful to see is the detailed meta data as when you pull in Red footage (ISO, K etc). That cannot be seen on the 7Q+ clips, but I believe it is recorded on the CF cards of the C500.

Thanks Uma,

Great info.

I have a toga arm should mount. I also have a v mount battery plate attached to the back of the 7Q?

Can anyone recommend a good V lock battery that is not too heavy?

Thanks

Thanks, can't get one in the UK they are like 300 pounds I think.

Is the V lock the best way to power the 7q? Will it be too bulky and heavy for the Noga arm?

Thanks

Yeah agree,

I mean I have the hawk adapter with D-Tap but was worried the 7q may be heavy for the arm. I am using a noga but was looking into a bright tangerine too..

Also is there any preference on the SDI cables for the 7q? Do you have to have specific ones?

Thanks

Be certain to get 3G Rated HD-SDI cables, you need two, plus a spare.

Ours are very good cables, rated up to 3G, and are extremely flexible.

Please feel free to use any good 3G Rated HD-SDI cable, provided it has 3G rated BNC connectors.

Hi Oliver,

I use the same battery type as one uses in the C500. I think you can purchase several kinds of battery connection adapters to suit your needs. i.e. you can use the unit with a sony battery or the batteries used in Canon C500 (BP-955, BP-975) and probably other battery types too. I was filming earlier this week. The C500 sucks the power out of a battery a whole lot quicker than the Odyssey 7Q+ unit. Not sure about plates for larger battery types. One thing worth considering if you have not already, is in addition to the 2 SSD discs that come with the unit, to purchase other SSD discs that are a whole lot cheaper for more recording space. ScanDisk UltraII (SDSSDHII-960G) SSDs are a whole lot cheaper than the convergent design SSDs and do the same work. It may be cheaper where you are, but in SA everything imported is priced up dreadfully. These other SSDs are compaitble with the unit and end up costing me about a quarter of the price (R4000= SSD, the unit SSDs are at least R10000 or R20 000 per disc disc or more, i cannot remember offhand). Check the disc is supported before purchase. When you get the unit it comes with handles you can easily attach to the SSDs (check that is included in the order).

The reason for extra SSDs is that some formats (RMF) and frame rates will only allow you to record for about 50 minutes before the disc is full. Even so, the price of the recording media still seems much better than the Red dragon (+- R50 000 per mini-mag!). Buying a dedicated onset laptop for data downloads made more sense in that case.

cheers

Hi Uma,

Thanks for your email,

Problem I have is powering the 7Q, I have been given a VLOCK Battery adapter but was worried adding a battery to it would not be held by the NOGA Arm unless i get a bright tangerine maybe.

How many batteries are you using for the C500? How quick does it drain?

If not I was looking at a rig and V lock solution but didn't want it bulky all the rigs are silly money just for some rails and a v mount plate.

Thanks

I use these Sony Batteries... If you go is route I recommend using new batteries. I have some of these that have used for years...the batteries have decayed a bit over that time and no longer hold the proper voltage needed to power the 7Q+ while recording. Basically the 7Q+ gives you a warning message and stops recording. The same new batteries work just fine. On a long interview I tend to like to plug to wall power.

I use these Sony Batteries...

THere are several different types of batteries that can power the O7Q - I found the easiest and most efficient route to take was to use the same battery that powers the camera , so I have a mounting bracket for some Canon type batteries. This way when you travel , you don't need to travel 2 different battery systems and chargers, just extra batteries of one type. 2 Canon BP970 batteries on an O7Q will power that unit for hours, weigh less than just about any V- lock battery and have a smaller physical profile.

I don't have my C500 any more and while I shot 24,30,60 P 4k with it , it seemed the real sweet spot was 2K 444. In that format it seemed like almost anything was possible in the grade.

Thanks guys

Mark smith how many batteries did you need for a c500 for a shoot

Camera batteries and 7q? Shootvaround 8 hours per day

Thanks

It really depends on the shooting situation. I tend to be "conservative" batteries so if I am shooting interviews in a situation with power I'll power camera and o7Q with ac supplies to save battery discharge/charge cycles. its a little hard for me to specify what an 8 hour shoot day would require battery wise since most of my my days involved some AC POWER. The O7Q is really efficient power wise so I would say 3 or 4 BP970 batteries get You through the whole day . As for camera I would say the same amount. The O7Q doesn't care if you use cheap - off brand batteries, however the camera certainly does and may not work with cheapo batteries.

Thanks mark.

Did you have no problems with the cheaper third party batteries with the 7q as they are cheap like 30.00 from the UK

I have one 512gb and be shooting mainly in 2K.

Quick question in CP locked mode were you shooting bt709 colour space or canon?

thanks

Thanks mark.

thanks

The C500 combo 7Q+ in 2K 12bit 4444 ProRes HQ is beautiful and a snap to color correct... A 1TB drive will get you around 4 hours of footage! We are shooting a Pilot for a new series in this mode and I wish I could share some of the footage now, but will have to wait till the future. The combo of the C500 and 1Dc 4K mode is great!

As a past C100 user... IMHO the C500 in this mode, blows away the C100, hands down! If all you want is the internal 1080p recording mode, IMHO the C100 with Ninja ProRes HQ is just as good, perhaps better...

The sound issue was the only problem I had with the C500, but the external fan unit I built has so far erased that issue all together. I have ordered and am getting ready to fabricate a couple of the fan systems for fellow C500 users. Please feel free to contact me if you need one.

One thing people forget when comparing the C500 to the C300 MK II price is that the canon batteries are way cheaper for the C500. Also the 7Q+ will travel to other cameras... the people I know who own the C300 MK ii also have a 7Q+... it sure is nice to have the ProRes!

To answer your question , I used cheaper batteries for the O7Q, and the monitor didn't care one bit. Of course I also used real canon batteries on the monitor as well it doesn't seem to care. You should get yourself at least one other SSD drive at the minimum to have an efficient work flow. With another drive you can still be shooting while one drive is being offloaded.... If you have access to a computer with Premiere or FCPX where can do a bit of grading, you should do yourself a favor and shoot some 2K 444 12 bit and take that footage for a spin in the edit. The grading possibilities of 444 12 bit are a revelation .
CP locked on the 500 puts the camera in Clog mode- so its not rec709.
