Noise on movement?

I did a quick check and the difference between the two PAP settings is about 5-6 units of video with setting 2 being the lower value of the two. This is not really a huge diff.

I used the type 2 setting which is the new one..

once you are in the options menu you can toggle between type 1 & 2 and see the effect on the picture
on the lcd live so to speak.

For the record Panasonic sent the firmware update to me as I have two 301's and use the 2700 and 3700 as well.

It is a bit strange that a problem highlighted on this forum was not given this info first as there are lots of 371 beta testers here!

I am still scratching my head though as I have never had any complaints about noise from my 301's shooting 1920x1080i 25np in PAL and they have been used on numerous broadcast and indie productions, maybe I just know how to light properly and with the BBC settings I am very happy with the results.

I think this thread is getting slightly derailed from its original purpose and looks like turning into another 370/300 slanging match.

Steve's original problem and mine was never about how much noise the camera had, it was the artifacts we saw in images. The new firmware hasnt 100% removed it but for me it is now a non event.

The 370 noise levels post firmware appear to be identical to before and even with the slight hit to sensitivity are still cleaner and more sensitive than the 300 and retaining the 300's sharpness.

The only reason i went for a 371 over a 300 was that i wanted to shoot in 1080 25p and the skew is much less on this cam.

If you are already a 300 owner there probably isnt a huge reason to goto the 370s they are both great cameras.

Here in the UK for the new buyer moving into full shoulder mount cameras its mainly about cost. To get a 371 here with lens is approx £8,223, to get a sony pmw-320 with lens is approx £10,338.

You have to ask yourself is the extra £2000 worth the possible gain or like a lot of broadcasters here do you just get it for the badge? (considering the 320 still uses the ex1's chips).

Hi Mikael the BBC settings are here:http://thebrownings.name/WHP034/pdf/WHP034-ADD38_Panasonic_HPX301.pdf

All valid points but the new Canon is 1/3" BBC approved with a 50mbs codec so the chip debate is becoming less valid.

The BBC are in talks with Sony and Panasonic at the moment about new camera's so they can't publish the reports on the 301 or 320 etc until this has been sorted as they cant be seen to give preference to one manufacturer at this time. Th Canon has been approved as it is not in the running but I think we shall see more 1/3" camera's approved for full HD as time goes on.

Besides as I already mentioned I have used my two 301's for broadcast and at the end of the day to me the codec is more important in post and AVC Intra 100 10 bit 4.2.2 1920x1080i 25np is on all the P2 camera's I use.

From what I've heard, the new Canon is indeed fully approved, but the feeling seems to be it's exceptional

Indeed seems to be bending the laws of physics! More processing and more potential flaws to reveal themselves? We'll see. When the BBC tech talks about diffraction not making an impact until f8 when you'd expect it by f4, what does that mean? I always thought the diffraction limit was a scientific fact, so why/how is this bending that rule?
Same with sensitivity and noise - all too good to be true?

Steve

Sorry I don't know when the BBC is going to make any decisions only that they are in the process of evaluating for new HD camera's.

Eastender's has gone down the PDW700s route (coz they are cheap due to the 800 coming out?) but I suspect that the news and BBC salford site is where the main assesment is going on, as the F35, PDW800 and varicam's are already on he list.

Who knows there may be new camera's from SONY and Panny being discussed so we shall see.

Trolling is completely unacceptable, and when you encounter it, please use the "report this post" button to alert us to the situation.

Who deleted all of HardDrive's posts? I must say I didn't notice any blatant advertising/pro Sony posts myself. And incidentally it's not Alister Chapman, his real name was in his public profile but that seems to have gone now too. What's going on? Why is this not a real names forum?
Steve
