Nirv's Grading Preset

So you don't own the cam, you don't want to share your spiffy PP, but you continue coming here and attempting to slam people that might not agree with you.
Grow up, move along, quit trolling.

Man can't let it sleep. So many amazingly helpful people here never asking for gratitude. Except you. If I repost what you put up will this stop or........Would have already done actually but though I'd give you a chance to rethink you stance a little, plus didn't wanna have to cross check my pp's ( no name able solution in cam) as we all know. But here we go... I'll get back to everyone else, you know the people not craving my thanks this afternoon. That is all.

One thing I don't get about dvxuser.com is that there is a "did you find this post helpful?" button on each post, but the system won't let you use it until you get 50 plugs on your own comments. That is sort of a catch-22, makes no sense.

Posting a lot of thank you's is a way of clogging up the threads, so that isn't ideal either.

I posted what I thought was a good way to reinforce the FS-100 handle for $20 back in March, but I got 0 comments. I don't know if everyone thought the idea was stupid or what, but it is still working for me. So many people were initally complaining about the stock handle.

So that is discouraging indeed to going to the trouble of making similar posts in the future.

I suggested a thank you button on dvinfo.net, the moderator thought it was a good idea, but it never happened there.

Thread Closed, Lets talk NEX FS900, anyone heard anything yet. Its 10k!!

@ nirv: haha. thats your opinion. i am not making worse pictures (... and, please define worse, thats totaly subjective). its about the person behind the camera and not about pp.

i mean photography: give a talented guy a disposable camera (maybe in filmmaking its coming with the bcc 3... lol) and he makes wonderful thinks out of it.
but i think that is our misunderstanding. we have two different understandings about beeing an artist (supposing that you also think of yourself as an artist). and this ideas about art are 180 degree in different directions.
anyone interested in what i really like? I love for example Robbie Ryan in andrea arnolds "Wuthering Heights"! This film is shot as a quadratic format (in the language of medium format cameras in 6x6). Fantastic, so much better than 16:9/cinemascope etc! of course -i know- i am provoking.

its also fantastic how you think you know everything. i think you have a problem with something and this forum here is the battlefield. i understand that you hate those people claiming they know so much and realy are knowing nothing, thinking they are the best in the world (thats the problem in every industry, that you have to sell yourself, beeing a commodity. and the problem is that the good salesagents are often the bad cameramans).
the problem is, you are the same. maybe you know more than the so called dslr amateurs (i dont mean that every dslr user is an amateur, its just a frame for specific people. i even got to know people with a red who are amateurs (with money)) but here is an advice: be more humble, thats something great!

So I ask you for just respecting different opinions, in this case my opinion about a good picture and that it has not much to do with pp. (and to be honest, that is something we all should talk about in this forum as well: what is a good picture, what are technics like lens whaking, not so much firmware updates, pp and other technical stuff)
just respect my opinion, dont bash me and others, its so easy on the internet, its happening all the time, but its so useless. no one is gaining anything out of bashing.

cheers

jakob

@rcteague: forget the fs 900, i heared the bcc 3 will be disposable as you can afford a new one every shooting!

Its come to my attention that i used a Fs700 pp not sure if i just changed the cine4 for look anyway that's what i got
Ooooh disposable at 10k crazy

I would have to disagree with you Jakobdvx, I am a digital film major and have done a lot of freelance work over the last 10 years. I have two professional cameras one of them being an FS100 and though I do agree that the skill of cinematography is very important in telling the story, just being skilled in framing and camera movement is not enough.

A good DP must be skilled in a variety of areas, lens choice and lighting being some of those skills, knowing how the light should fall on the actors for a given scene, revealing an interior space, creating a mood, drama and excitement for the viewer as well lighting a background to give depth to a scene. They must know how to opperate their camera for a variety of situations as each situation will always be different.

They give a film its unique visual identity, or look and thus the picture profiles are needed. A good DP must also know the limits of their camera as Nirv has pointed out on many occassions "a good DP will get the most out of the camera and bad one will blame the camera for their lack of knowledge".

Whether Nirv thinks he knows it all is an opinion, but I must admit he is usally right about what he is talking about and that is why people are interested in his profile. I have not heard from a single person who tried the profile out and said it was not any good in fact every one who has used it said it was very good including Frank Glencairn a very respected person on this forum.

Again if the abilities of a camera were not that important then every one would not be so interested in trying to get a camera in the sub 10k range that will shoot and give the look of an Arri Alexa. That's why this is such an exciting time to be in the industry of film making. The technological advancements have put these great cameras in our hands at such an affordable price, but if your a cinematographer who does not know how to use the equipment to the best of its abilites along with the other skills that are needed then it's like Nirv has stated before a cinematographer with lack of knowledge simple blames the camera for their lack of ability to use it.

The first response in this thread shows:
Black Gamma High, 7
Colour Level +2
Colour Phase -2
Colour Depth R-3

Do you have a PP that matches those? Or was that completely different than Nirv's PP?

@jakobdvx

You seem to be changing your tune, you've gone from rudely demanding my preset because you had to have it for your film and that I really know what I'm talking about to a PP not being all that important to you. Why keep on about the PP? Move on. When you're making a documentary with zero money next time you'll think twice about making demands.

I gave the preset to anyone who contacted me via PM. Those that did so politely got it with instructions on how to get the best from it and offers of further assistance. Those that PMed demanding it got nothing and you weren't the only one who got nothing.

I would've impressed if you had mentioned The Draughtsman's Contract as a study of composition rather than Wuthering Heights because it's what's happening in the frame that's most important. You might also want to watch other Greenaway films for usage of the aspect ratio too. I would've been mighty impressed had you mentioned Chris Doyle's cinematography instead of Ryan. You were "provoking" because you think people here might only have an appreciation for 16:9 or film aspects, is that right?

Good luck with that documentary sounds like you're going to need it.

@nirv: thanks for the film, i will watch it, as it really looked interesting. and i will follow your advice concerning greenaway.
at least something good is getting out of this as i didnt know him before
Thanks for the luck
I wish you also the best for your projects.

@garry w: i agree with you 100%, and what i read in the forums really looked as if nirv knows much about this camera for sure!

i think i end this now. i dont think with this situation i will get nirvs profile or could ask him for help anymore, maybe i should have been myself a little bit more humble. so sorry for that. but.... at least this is the 50th post ;-)

cheers

just found this. i have to post that. and please dont take me too serious. sorry for posting it in german
„Im Kino müssen wir uns erst einmal von der Tyrannei befreien, und es sind deren vier: die Tyrannei des Texts, die Tyrannei des Schauspielers, die Tyrannei des Bildausschnitts und, am allerwichtigsten, die Tyrannei der Kamera. Der Film muß sich von der Kamera trennen, um sich aus der Sklaverei zu befreien. Denn da bin ich mir ganz sicher: Die Kamera steht dem Film im Weg.“
– Peter Greenaway[SUP][10][/SUP]
I will definitely watch some films of him. Thanks again nirv!
