Nirv's Grading Preset

Looks good here Nirv, thanks

ps... i gave up camera pointing & lightmeter reading when 16mm was dieing, like you, switching to post.

But i have kept doing something in camera every year, bcam or splinter unit on features, a doco.. whatever, but something with a screen credit every year....

Makes me a better colorist / finishing artist / VFX sup, and staying current keeps doors open...

Looks good here Nirv, thanks

Cheers.

Additional Notes:
May fave is the CineTone 2 version of the preset seems pretty much unbreakable in the grade. You have to go to stupid levels to introduce banding.

BTW the Black Level is not fixed and should be set to taste. My feeling is if it's too low it becomes counter productive. The preset is setup so that when you bring the super brights legal the waveform should sit nicely between 0 and 100 IRE then do your grading from there.

The theory behind the preset is by using 109 as the top end the knee effectively kicks in lower but you don't go made with a flat plateau you keep it as steep as possible for the scene. You get a more DSLR style highlight performance which many find desirable and if not it is easily graded out.

This PP won't be for everyone but for those that bring the image together in the grade hopefully it'll be useful.

Just played wit them - I really like the version with Cine2.
Gonna keep that on my FS100 and replace the Abel Range PP.

Thanks for sharing.

Frank

Nirv was there a reason you took your picture profile down?

Clearly people weren't interested in it or at least only 2 people could be bothered to say thanks.

I'll scuttle back under my rock and leave the posting of presets to others.

Nirv,

I havent used your profile, but I will say thanks for posting it - I for one really appreciate the info posted by you and others here- makes it a great place to visit and learn!

Don't scuttle.

Don't scuttle.

Nirv, I have been busy on shoots but definitely follow your posts on a regular basis. I was really looking forward to trying your profile out. When you get a chance, I would very much appriciate you posting it again. I think there are more people on here interested in your opinions than you think, I being one of them. Thanks in advance Gary W

just have not had much time to get on here

Hi Nirv,

I lurk here alot and i haven't got to try your PP. However, that's not what I'm here for.

In the other discussion threads, what you have mentioned much about KNEE and the tradeoffs with other settings/parameters has really gotten me into a big leap with my tests with the FS100's colour handling. And it's tough over this side since most people i shoot are mostly tanned (I'm in Malaysia) so i can't just copy and apply. The picture profile i've been working on was to give a great colour seperation between the orange-ish brown facial tones apart from red pinkish lips. Just before Frank made his indestructible color profile of his, I've already got to rely very much on mine.

And it was very much thanks to you, trying to crack what you've mentioned about in the other threads, it has been rewarding.
Thank you Nirv, and I'll be glad to share out the profile out soon to others who need it soon enough.

Here's a video i made with my latest picture profile:

Note: I make videos for a living, but my Whatever There Was episodes are my 'test' videos themselves as i get to at least play and experiment with visuals and content rather than just having generic test videos. Skin detail look a little mush as the Cosmo plug-in were in the mix, except for the part when i was sweating. Enjoy!

Nirv,
It sounds like you had some expectations of people that were not quickly met during the couple of days your profile was posted. I am sure many people don't reply in the forum until they actually have tested a profile for themselves.
( Based on your earlier comments about going back to your animation business) - I am sorry that your work as shooter isn't as profitable as you had wanted/needed. You are not alone. The economy is tough everywhere. Try to stay positive and resilient.

Recession is everywhere at now . I saw your post with PP a few days ago . I was going to back and write down . :crybaby: no pp
Any way thanks for everything . I found out many interesting things from your post .

@Damien, No after nearly 500 page views and the thread disappearing onto page 2 only 2 people had showed any appreciation for the PP. Compare and contrast to other PP threads. I consider my IP to have greater value than that. I made a mistake thinking people would appreciate the PP.

Thank you to those who have written supportive messages. Cheers.

I have now sold my FS100 and lenses fortunately I haven't lost much and enjoyed my time with the camera. As I said I am concentrating on my animation business and venturing into video was a failed side project experiment. I finally had enough of the low balling mentality of clients. F**k it, I am not used to this as I work as a freelance motion graphics artist where this low balling does not happen or at least my mograph clients are of the level where they understand if you pay peanuts you just get monkey sh1t. I understand that everyone is finding it tough but to beat the price down to ridiculous levels just impacts on the end product and then it's just not worth doing. I still retain some dignity even at my age.

If I ever need a camera for a project I intend to hire from now on or beat a poor unsuspecting camera operator down to legal minimum levels of pay! ;)

All the best.

Isn't the whole point of contributing to forums simply to share info and experiences and add to the collective knowledge base? These things take time to sort out, I was planning on adding it to my PP's to test while shooting next week at the Republican National Convention. I think your cause could have been helped with screenshots to demonstrate its benefits.

I know virtually nothing about grading, but I'm working on it, and a lot of the settings on the FS are a major mystery that I'm trying to unravel. I'm thankful for PP's that have been posted as its really helped me get comfortable with working with a camera that's far more complex than the 5d2 I was shooting with prior to the FS100. Those with knowledge to share I really appreciate, and you've had some really informative posts that have certainly helped me out. I don't shoot cinema though, just low-rent commercials until my post production chops and demo reel get better.

But IMHO its incredibly petty that your "thank you" counter didn't reach a certain number relative to what you perceive other threads are getting so you took your toy and ran away. My 4-year-old daughter had some sharing issues so my wife and I had her read this book:

http://www.amazon.com/Mine-Shelly-B...e=UTF8&qid=1345929495&sr=1-3&keywords=sharing

Perhaps you might find it helpful as well. It seemed to work for her, she plays with others much better after reading it. I'm not going to beg you to repost - I'm fine with the PP's from Frank, Abel and others that are still posted - even if I haven't sent them a thank you card.

cheers
