Nikon D5

Just because YOU have changed the way you make your $$$ doesn't mean that some global manufacturer of stills cameras has to.

Of course I dont matter to nikon. But really I know many people who have businesses that have gone in the direction mine has gone a mashup of stills and video. In fact basically the only people I know who are stills only and would want a D5 are my two mates who do sports stills for big agencies.

Part of the problem selling stills cams to professionals is that basically 5d2, D3, whatever, are great stills cameras!

Also nikon may need brand leaders who drive the low end sales. Chase Jarvis - whoever - and if those 'leaders' are not shooting aspirational nikon then the lower orders don't covet the brand any more.

Nikon need to be in the space station, on everest, 1000 leagues under the sea, to sell to Joe Public.

Not to mention that Nefs at 60p could actually out do an alexa and create a new market because the nikon (raw) file is a very sweet one.

The Nikon Rumors guy is now also screaming that D850 is a fake. He could have done it sooner, obviously.

I'm not sure that at their typical $5,000-$6,000 price point they will be able to really woo any video camera customers...certainly not with new cameras from Sony, Blackmagic, and even RED floating around that price point.

Tech trickles down from the top end, heck especially with their video tech! Nikon often has it show up better on their lower end cameras first. If the D5 gets 4K, well then the D620/D5600/D3400/"D400" surely can't be far away with 4K next? (as those 4 or 3 cameras are the ones I'll predict might come out in 2016. Maybe even a D750 successor with 4K in late 2016,D810 was too soon to see a successor but who knows a D900 might come with the A7r mk2 sensor in it).

I was planning on getting the NX1 for these reasons but the lens mount issue killed the deal for me.
I have A LOT of Nikon mount glass.

Gooooooooo for it! As a Nikon glass collector (me too!) you are position perfectly to get a NX1 and use it (unlike Canon EF mount users, they're scr*wed with their non-manual lenses!!).

It doesn't really matter if it's photoshopped as we all KNOW that a D5 is coming. Hopefully Nikon goes exclusively with XQD in the D5.

FS7 owners would be very happy if it does! As that would help drive down QXD prices.

Is that really a mic..on the back?!!

Top end cameras have had a mic for audio notes for years before video happened.

Ok..but at the point of adding video, for split purpose a top position might have been a sensible compromise. How crisp does an audio tag need to be? Dunno..I've worked with Nikon photogs..never talk to their cams.

Bit crowded up there already where the top dial is, and I imagine a photographer doesn't gear enough about the audio notes as to if the mic is placed a few inches closer or not.

i come from pro stills and own a d3 which is basically good enough for any pro job apart from architecture - for which I bought a £1000 d600

i owned a nikon f3 f4, f5, d1 and d2 and d3 so nikon need to sell the d5 to me.. But my business moved from stills to stills and video. I didn't buy a d4 but an fs7

so Id say video is not a blip for them - as to fail to deliver to 'media professionals' is to completely destroy their own market

Most pro snappers I know are just not bothered about upgrading thier d3 or d4. NP my chum is about to buy an fs5 he is a d4 owner. It's a Nikon fail to loose all that loyalty and cash we've given them over the decades.

sarah my accountant hobbiest mate bought Nikon because I use Nikon so the trickle down is lost too

imo

EXACTLY!! As the market for pure photographers falls off a cliff, many are moving over into being an hybrid photos / video pro instead. They'll lose (in the long run) many of their Nikon pro stills shooters if there is no cinema class camera to move over to with a Nikon F mount.

Exactly, need to keep a hold onto the pro photographers (such as those who moving over into becoming hybrid shooters) as it is them who inspire the thousands (millions??) of amateur masses to follow in their footsteps and buy Nikon cameras for themselves.

Lunch with 'big agency guy'.

"Ill be doing the Olympics on a D5"

We didn't really talk about it because neither of us are that interested in the stills specs (and he wouldn't know the video specs!)

This is kind of related to the rumored Samsung-Nikon partnership, as the Japanese and the South Korean governments have agreed to an accord with regard to the Japanese occupation of Korea that ended after WWII. Historically, since then, the two countries have had strained relations - their cooperation on the 2002 World Cup notwithstanding - and this is hailed as a major step in improving them. Both countries have very close business-government ties, so I'd think that Samsung wasn't an idle bystander during the preceding negotiations.

Nikon Rumors say it's two almost identical models - one with dual QXD slots; the other with dual CFast.

But, no info on the codec or HDMI out.
