Nikon D5

Another argument for shooting silent and ADR'ing all the dialog was that in Europe especially, films were routinely dubbed into a dozen languages for release in different regions. If 90% of the audience was going to see the movie with dubious lip sync and different actors doing the voices anyway, there wasn't a big extra incentive to record quality dialog on-set just for the minority who would view it in the original language. It sure saves time and money to not worry about vocal delivery, room acoustics, traffic noises and boom shadows in every setup.

And with mixed international casts and crews, there may not even be one definition of what any film's "original" language was anyway. It may be better to replace lines than try to dig meaning and emotional nuance out of the heavily accented speech of an actor struggling with a language that is not their own.

Right you are! And in 'The Good The Bad The Ugly' actors Clint Eastwood, Eli Wallach and Lee Van Cleef were the only actors speaking English. Even the director Sergio Leone did not speak English.

The real question is if nikon want to make nice video. (or are even allowed to given I think they are non compete with Sony) S
I assume that the sensor isn't from Sony (we'll see, right?) and the non-compete is probably expiring or due to expire before the release. In either case, the move to partner up with Samsung looks like a smart one.

"Die Czardasfürstin" (1971) was a joint German-Hungarian production with an American opera singer Anna Moffo in the title role. Half of the cast members spoke fluent German (albeit with different dialects), half spoke mostly Hungarian and Moffo spoke GSL. The version I saw way back when, the dialog was dubbed into the local tongue but the singing performances remained in German, as they were in the original musical. But it was lip-sync'ed.

Here's one of the most curious doubly-dubbed version, with the dialog in Hungarian, Moffo's performance in English (if anyone's interested, singing starts at 4:12), the next number in Hungarian (10 min in), then Kollo's and Moffo's duet again in English (16:00).

Ok..but at the point of adding video, for split purpose a top position might have been a sensible compromise. How crisp does an audio tag need to be? Dunno..I've worked with Nikon photogs..never talk to their cams.

Some folks on that thread opined that Toshiba was licensing some of their tech from Sony anyway and thus the eventual sale of the Toshiba sensor business to Sony was to be expected. The other manufacturers like Aptina would have had to custom make to Nikon's specifications, since they don't prioritize the large sensor photo/video but are more of a smartphone geared company. And that left Nikon scrambling for a supplier, making the (not yet announced) Samsung partnership a crucial strategic step.

"Nikon sample. Not for sale". Now, where does one get those?

Get a job t a big agency that photographs top end sport?

--

The D(single digit) series is meant for top end professional use.

It would seem ,disappointingly, that this is still a camera aimed at stills only. (yes it will probably have some form of compressed mush video)

Ive always wanted a D(single digit) with a video module (XLR, SDi, data dump) to record many NEF files - which would be a tool for top end video production.

I dont think that is coming.

And it probably never will.

The video market is hardly even a blip for Nikon.

Stills capabilities are what sells camera bodies.

You mean like Panasonic YAGH for GH4?

IMO, there's something to be said about the Red-like modular design but YAGH just did not sell. Of course, it was a $2,000 addition for a $1,700 camera upon release. Make it a $500 YAGH on top of a $4,500 D5 and it might move a few pieces.

PS. As to the "Not for sale" sign, I believe the original French poster implied that it was in a store. Rumors that D5's have been out and about in the hands of the early testers have been around a while. Who are these "early testers" then? That 50mm F1.4 Sigma Art is not a sport lens ... unless you're shooting snooker or something.

i come from pro stills and own a d3 which is basically good enough for any pro job apart from architecture - for which I bought a £1000 d600

i owned a nikon f3 f4, f5, d1 and d2 and d3 so nikon need to sell the d5 to me.. But my business moved from stills to stills and video. I didn't buy a d4 but an fs7

so Id say video is not a blip for them - as to fail to deliver to 'media professionals' is to completely destroy their own market

Most pro snappers I know are just not bothered about upgrading thier d3 or d4. NP my chum is about to buy an fs5 he is a d4 owner. It's a Nikon fail to loose all that loyalty and cash we've given them over the decades.

sarah my accountant hobbiest mate bought Nikon because I use Nikon so the trickle down is lost too

imo

A d5 and a yag is just what I want. 2008 Nikon d3 Nef files eat the lossy mudge I get from my fs7 and frankly wipe red and Arri files too - a camera that did nef at 10fps and had a bolt on box to go up to 60fps would be an amazing tool - both for videographers and even sports togs - ESP as a pellicle mirror could keep the AF functioning

the he only tester I know for Nikon works for a large news/sport agency - I don't know if he's played with the 5

Don't know the validity of this D5 footage but found it out there: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RmCDAHq8pcY
A number of the shots look overexposed to me and some of the later ones have a video look to them imho--I had a D810 and the shots didn't look this look to me, they were more filmic (using a flat profile mind you). The shots outdoors of the flowers in this sample just have more of a video look to me. My two cents....

Except the video market is not how they make money.

98% of the people who buy their DSLRs buy them for taking stills.

Just because YOU have changed the way you make your $$$ doesn't mean that some global manufacturer of stills cameras has to.

And like you, I have been shooting Nikon since the days of the FM2.
